It's moreso a "seek comfort through familiarity" kind of thing. Gen I and II have a larger proportion of Pokemon that physically look like real-life animals.

Even that is debatable.
Every generation has their oddball ones and their very animal-like ones.
IMO, Gen I had more oddball Pokemon than Gen IV.

It's also funny that Mewtwo from Gen I is more humanlike/"furry" than all the other super Legends.
Lugia, Ho-Oh, Groudon, Kyogre, Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina are far more monstrous/beastlike.

So I'm also think that those who keep saying Pokemon are becoming more Digimon/furry are misguided at best.
Or maybe they're just parrotting back frequently heard comments.
There have always been Pokemon with those traits along with the cute, the vicious and the oddball.
It's one of the things I like about the series; the variety in the monsters.

yeah people who see a monster that looks like an anime thing with a million lines and swirls all over it and don't like it are literally crazy

Looking at the fanart from the previous page, the starters look pretty good. They actually made the water starter look pretty good along with the pig one in the middle.

Charizard and Typhlosion look way cooler than humanoid chicken and a monkey. The water starters I really have no problem with but Sceptile is a clusterfuck and Torterra's boring.

For me Charizard is generic and Meganium's shit.

Torterra is awesome because it's like that Eastern tortoise myth, and tortoises are awesome. Blaziken is a unique take on "cock-fighter" which is quite dominant in the eastern world too.

Instead of a pig (which would be lame)...how about an armadillo. It would be an unused cool animal and I think it would actually fit that silhouette.

Typhlosion sucks theres isnt even a color change in the hole evolutionary line he looks like a biger quilava.

Sandshrew IS a pangolin. Armadillos have a different look. It also has that tail.

You'd think it'd be a shrew. Heh.

Actually, that's what I wanna see- someone draw Pokemon going only on their names.

I can see that, but I much prefer the Cyndaquil line to the Gen III/IV fire starters.
Theres the key you prefer them i see no problem with the starters on any generation but people think that the pokemon that they dont prefer means that the rest are some how inferior. Theres nearly 500 pokemon your bound to like some and not like others buts lets not pretend we will like the same ones.

Yeah, preference tends to be come their total rationale, which is really disturbing because for some odd reason it also becomes the root of more serious decision-making stuff. XD

Anyway I vote for duck, armadillo, and... um... a cat?

Hmm, maybe prefer was the wrong word. I guess it would be that I dislike the Gen III/IV fire starter designs. Especially the final evolutions. Although, I do like the Gen IV water and grass types a lot.

Also, the Shinx line is awesome when it comes to design. My favorite electric 3 stage evolution.

Torterra is a giant turtle with mountains and trees on its back.
That's awesome.
Reminds me of Discworld (A'tuin!)

Edit:
Anyway I vote for duck, armadillo, and... um... a cat?
I'd say an otter,or a beaver.

You just disqualified yourself from all future Pokemon-related discussions. Seriously, how can anyone dislike Charizard :/

Yeah, Charizard is pretty awesome. Personally I'd rank the starters (by their final evo) like this...

Charizard > Infernape > Blaziken > Typhlosion
Empoleon > Feraligatr > Blastoise > Swampert
Venasaur > Torterra > Sceptile > Meganium

Switch Meganium and Sceptile and this works for me.

I hate Charizard, but I have an intense rivalry with him because Blastoise was my starter.

as a child playing gen 1, the ones i hated were magmar, electabuzz, hypno, mr. mime, and jynx, because they were either too weird, too human, too complicated-looking, or a mixture of those

but that was obviously me being nostalgic for uh, the then-present

just like when i saw magazine pictures of gen II pokemon like scizor and giraffarig and hated those, because my child-self was nostalgic for the good ol' days of 1-2 years previous

Hey guys I think EmCeeGramr is trying to tell us he has reasons for his opinions

Thats the one thing I didn't like about the first gen starters . . . they were all fat with stubby legs. I couldn't even imagine how Charizard would run until I saw that Pikachu Vaction short :/

But I learnt to love him! For me its . . .
Charizard>Blaziken>Typhlosion>Infernape

well considering there's a bunch of guys circle-jerking in here about how free they are from that evil nostalgia, the only possible reason ever for having those opinions

When I saw Gen II for the first time I was pumped. Seriously, most exciting thing in my life at that age.

Then again, Gen II was the first time I really understand what the hell was going on. 6-year-olds don't really need Game Boys folks :lol

Meganium was obviously a dinosaur.

Hey, I was mostly pumped too!

But Scizor really put a damper on it, because Scyther looked fucking awesome, and what was supposed to be its "evolution" looked more like Scyther's "special" nephew.

I think Scizor was one of the ones I was most excited about tbh. It looked so fucking cool. That and Donphan :lol

That 4chan list is terrible. The first 150 aren't perfect, and most of the Pokemon they crossed out are actually good. Electivire and Magmortar are AWESOME. They took such good care of that evolution chain even though it was made throughout 4 generations.

Man, the list actually makes me mad. There are of course ugly Pokemon, but they aren't concentrated in Gen 4 like that. Not at all. How the hell is Raticate a better normal rodent than Linoone?

Really Empoleon is the best water starter? Fat penguins with a trident beak and a tie are alright but they're not Feraligatr or Blastoise cool.

Did they hit your sweet spot with the Charizard bashing?

I hated magmar because it had such a shitty sprite. And among the starters, Charizard was the only decent looking one from behind in R/B. The first time I played, I started over when my Bulbasaur evolved into ivysaur :lol

Does not compute.

How great was it when you found out they fixed that in S/G? I think thats the most excited I've ever been when it comes to graphics.

You assbags are going to get this thread locked and then I will have to start kicking people in the beans so just ease up and take it to a "Pokemon Nostalgia Fact or Fiction" or something.

Nothing but love to my fellow Pokeminions
