I get that Torterra is the Iroquois Creation Myth (turtle with the world on its back) and Infernape is Son Goku/Wukong from Journey West, but I never understood what Empoleon was supposed to be.

Seems that Empoleon's name comes from Emperor + Napoleon, as does his Japanese name (Emperte = Emperor + Bonaparte). His design suggests a royal sort of figure, with his trident beak and frilly shirt design on his chest. So...a sort of literal Emperor Penguin?
 
Sentret is the only Pokemon that evolves into something cuter.

When deciding that he is the worst rodent remember that in Soul Silver he humps the air when he is sent out.

Rating favorite starters now? Blaziken is the coolest fire one and Empoleon the coolest water one. No opinion on the grassies they're all kinda blah. And Linoone is great! They bring me rare candies and love!
 
I understand and knew what Torterra was based on but I think its execution was horrible. If you remove the mountains and trees it's a really basic design. All the other grass starters have dynamic designs.

GAF makes me hate it bitterly with this Typhlosion bashing. >:|

Typhlosion > Charizard > Blaziken > Infernape (Even though I love the hell out of all the fire starter end forms.)
Blastoise > Swampert > Empoleon > Feraligatr (Water & Ground was a great mix. Water/Steel is creative as well)
Sceptile = Venusaur = Torterra > Meganium (To this day I still want to like Meganium. I can't. How the form before it manages to look better than the final form is a mystery to me. :lol)
 
Sceptile is pretty cool y'all. But I cannot unsee a christmas tree as a bumstick...

Also, Typhlosion would be cool if it didn't have fucking hamster teeth.

man i always liked venusaur the best out of all the games i played but i never got far enough in diamond to see the fucking tortoise with a tree on its back i got bored so fast but that shit is rockin' fuck yeah

I was never really bothered by it. It's possibly due to the fact that I never really cared about the Chikorita family. It's my least favorite of 2nd gen starters but since I never really liked it before its evolution line never really bothered me.

I'm not going to get into the rest of this random "which is best" discussion except to say that Furret is adorable as all hell and might be one of my favorite designs despite never really using one.

You know what upsets me? Every time I think of how amazing both Cyndaquil and Quilava are, it gets shut down by how fucking stupid Typhlosion is. God dammit, what a stupid Pokemon. I mean honestly, what is it suppose to be? A big fucking thing with fire on it's back. So stupid.
 
Staraptor is the only "generic bird" worth keeping. wtf a bird with close combat and brave bird?! Holy shit!

He's pretty generic in design, as well as Dragonite.

Seriously, wtf is so special about Dragonite? He looks like Barney with wings. From awesome Dratini to super awesome Dragonair... then wtf Dragonite?!
