He was nerfed too much after the arcade release where has was OP and now other characters are not only stronger but much easier to learn and use.
Gengar at the highest level is still competitive, but you're right that he takes the most effort to get there out of the whole cast.

Here's the Top 8 archive if you missed it: https://www.twitch.tv/pokkentournament/v/84700308?t=05h02m33s

Hopefully they have another season and continue supporting the game at tournaments.

I still get matches pretty quickly in Friendly and Ranked whenever I play. There's also still people regularly playing in the Pokken Community Discord.

Always cool to see pretty diverse top placings.

So who's still keeping up with this game? I play daily and online competition is getting tough! I'll be on for a bit if anyone wants to play, let me know!

It's weird they still haven't said anything about Darkrai coming to the console version...or about the other 3 character slots.

So that Hori controller does a solid job at being awesome, I love it so far.

The fact that it also works on PC makes it even better.

From what I played so far with it, on 13 ranked I got like only 4 losses, good to see I'm still holding up with my Braixen.

You're fighting the good fight :3

I just had an idea. You know who would make a killer entrant that nobody would suggest? Probopass.

That segment where it was in pokemon generations inspired me.

So i decided to throw in pokken after a long time today and i had a blast. I also had some moments of frustration which lead me to my questions:

1. Is there a way to report players for disconnecting before losing/lagging really badly/spamming? Ruined my win rate from 100% to around 65% within a day :(

2. What can i do against garchomp's dig? This shit seems broken. I can't do anything against it. Usually spamming isn't really a problem for me since i can develop counters pretty easily. But this? Not even punishable after blocking for me because it is so fast and unpredictable (charizard player here).

3. What supports are y'all using and what are your recommendations? Used to use reshiram/cresselia a lot, but i discovered electrode today and he seems pretty good.

4. What about nia? What boosts do you use?

Bonus: What's your favorite mon to use? Stage? Music? Hope to get some fresh air into this thread

I can't answer any of this as I just recently dusted it off and played some local games today for the first time in an age myself and I'm just having a very slow time of re-aquainting myself with the rigid RPS structure (old soul calibur habits have me grabbing when someone's in my face because it's fast, forgetting that despite that it'll whiff in pokken because they started their attack anim) but it's fun to see I'm not the only person who's just hopped back into the arena recently :D

I'm just still trying to work out which of the unlocked supports I have work with Braixen for comboing :/
Braixen is my favourite Pokken pokemon and the Magikarp stage always makes me smile. Doesn't hurt that the music is funky too :D

1) no, unfortunately. But you can use the blocking feature on the friend list to make sure you don't run into those people anymore.

2) Dig is actually easy to deal with once you understand its options and your opponent's habits. The rising attack finisher in particular is really unsafe on block.

3) Still rocking Rotom/Togekiss and I still swear by it as a top 3 support set overall and the best for Blaziken.

4) Special boost for Nia. The massive synergy boost on a win makes me more comfortable bursting every round.

Cool! :D
Braixen seems like a fun character, first time i picked her i was confused since she seemed to play very differently but i have seen some crazy braixen combos!
Yesss the magicarp stage! You see, i also play pokemon go, and everytime i see a wild magicarp this song pops up in my mind immediately! EVERY TIME! It's the official magicarp theme now :D

That's a bummer.
Dig is probably easy to deal with, i just have to get used to the game again i think. It was just frustrating when they kept spamming it and i couldn't do anything. Gotta keep on training!
Never tried rotom and togekiss i will give them a shot thanks! And yes, special boost is what i go for too.

Played a bit of this game again today (played a lot at release, it's been a while) and I'm not sure how I feel about it tbh. Matchmaking is still really fast and the games are quick enough that it makes you want to keep playing, but the core gameplay doesn't feel like other fighting games. It's REALLY HARD to be reactive here. Punishing almost doesn't exist, you either have to have some kind of projectile set-up or guess right.

It just feels like I'm managing whatever weird things the other guy can do. I mean technically that could describe any fighting game but every Pokemon is playing their own game here. If you don't know or can't deal with it you just lose, and lose FAST. Everything does a shitload of damage that there's very little time to learn from the cheese in a given match.

I've picked up Lucario (Gardevoir main originally), and I know my match-up knowledge is garbage, but I feel like I'm just guessing the whole time and hoping stuff will connect instead of punishing properly or being punished properly. Shield stun is so goddamn long for almost anything it's absolutely bonkers. I would say for most attacks you end up neutral or possibly at a slight disadvantage on block.

So it just comes down to the RPS, but even that seems to not really work as expected all the time. I had a guy spam Mewtwo dive attacks while I was in synergy, I guess to avoid my burst, and it... worked? Like, I block his dive, but my recovery is so long from the hit stun that he can safely jump again. After a few moments of this I went for the burst, but ended up missing. Obviously I mistimed it, but it feels like the kind of thing that shouldn't really be working. The amount of safe attacks is off the charts and it makes blocking feel worthless.

That's just one thing though; there are tons of other little things. Trying to break through special grabs doesn't seem to work all the time (like Gengar's Hypnosis). I don't know if it's a spacing thing or what but I know it's coming on my wake-up, press Y to try and beat it with "red static" (RPS) but I get grabbed anyway. Or trying to grab a special counter that the guy charges on your wake up, but just getting hit instead. But then other times still, attacks can be mashed through and beat regular grabs seemingly at random; sometimes you just end up at neutral and sometimes you "break through" and hit the guy grabbing and start a combo. Stuff like that. It just feels like ability interactions are all over the place and you have to try and predict so far in advance because you can't react or punish very many things, so it's basically just guessing. Some "command" grabs or counters seem to break the rules and don't really fit inside the RPS, while others behave as you'd expect. It's frustrating when matches are over in a blink of an eye, losing to some specific interaction, and then you don't run into the same guy again.

I mean, I kept playing and there is some strategy in here of course, but it was hard for me to come away with learning very much from my losses online. Because the game seems to be so much about either hard hard reads or crazy set-ups, I think having a constant sparring partner would help a lot. Most people don't stick around in unranked to fight repeated matches though. :(

Still looking forward to any DLC though if it's still coming.

As an aside I've come to the conclusion that Lucario's Burst is pretty bad when going up against other bursts. I've lost multiple double activations (like where we both activate synergy burst within a fraction of a second of eachother) both when I use burst first and also when I use burst second. Bleh.

I completely understand most of the points raised in that post, more than any other fighter I've played it feels like knowing the ins and outs of each move being thrown out by either side is kinda essential in not feeling baffled as to why what you felt should be a clear punish completely failed and what not.

But let's say there still isn't a reveal?
I'd start complaining.

The only reason I would wait for the switch reveal to be angry is that they could show a port (or sequel tease) and have a "by the way the dlc for the wii u version is out now" posted on twitter or something.

By all accounts the console port was a bigger financial success than the arcade outing. Why they're now treating the larger userbase as a red-headed stepchild is beyond me.

I kind of agree with this. I liked the game, but not enough to learn every single move in the game just to feel like I have any control over a match and am not just mashing random buttons, so ended up dropping it pretty quickly.

Boss Doggie

all my loli wolf companions are so moe
to those wondering, no Empoleon is still in location test phase, so until he is officially "out" expect no patch

On the upside, the Pokken Community is leading in the charity drive for the people's choice slot for EVO 2017 (at the time of this post.) Here's hoping they continue so we can see some awesome stuff again like Tono-sama's Braixen: the spacing in some of his matches were so on point it was giving me crazy soul calibur flashbacks :3

There's a 2on2 team tournament at Tokaigi this weekend: http://live.nicovideo.jp/watch/lv288513358

It starts February 11th at 9pm est. A lot of strong players will be competing and Pokkén Tournament Producer Masaaki Hoshino will also be attending. IIRC at the last one Shadow Mewtwo and Chandelure were revealed and a live demo was shown after the tournament.

Anyone know a good to get double KOs? They seem to be a real pain in this game.

Gengar can get double hits with his aerial Xs, so I would imagine a double KO is possible...

Who are a list of people to pester on twitter to have them pester Hoshino about darkrai and co?

EDIT: For others, I should mention that Nico lets you sign in with NNID, so while you do need an account you don't need to memorize another signin.

Who's six?
Glad i'm not the only one wondering that :p

edit: so I get from that that there's an update with some very notable changes (e.g. machamp gets a roll to approach with, latios being some crazy rotating prison of laser beams, etc) but also something else like a season 2?

Pentao from PokkenArena translated the changes: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...jmCFP4TrKTZjlBUTkPeFlZzFw/edit#gid=1913854574

The season 2 thing is that Pokken will be at the world championships again. Not really sure how that'll work when the rest of the world is behind on updates. There didn't seem to be that many details about it. : (
