Anyone who understands taxes better than I do, um, why do Federal Employees "pay" income taxes? Don't taxes pay their salaries already? Wouldn't it be better to calculate a percentage of what their income would be under their tax rate and just pay them that, tax free? Or am I missing something completely?

Because the government does not want to be in the business of essentially preparing its employees' tax returns.

The media is one of the least regulated markets in the US. Why not let the market (who spends the most money on favors and advertising) decide the election? It's what your ideology calls for, isn't it? If Paul can't win, it's because he was too week, and his ideology was too broken, too flawed.

You don't want big old socialist gubment to step in and make sure the media is equally and accurately representing all of the potential candidates do you?
Was going to make this same point. The private, free-market media has spoken.

That Rick Perry ad is not meant to be watched by the general electorate. It's a piece to rile up his conservative base. He hits all the right notes for his : pro business, anti-entitlement, family man (one man-one woman, mind you!), and c-c-c-c-conservative to the core!

Play that bullshit in the general election and Rick Perry done shoot his own two feet with his double barreled shotgun.

I'm going to fucking vomit. I know people BS all the time about "leavIng America" over an election but damn if rick perry was elected I'd seriously consider leaving. I don't need another President who says I'm not an American(I'm an atheist)

Yep, at Bioware Austin.

Caveat: I hate Rick Perry.

That said, while he's used the Emerging Technology Fund in Texas as a blunt weapon and a campaign contribution tool, it's hard to deny it has been effective in bringing technology jobs to Texas. The incentives the ETF can bring to bear for a company who needs a headquarters are significant.

It's basically a $500 million venture capital fund controlled by Perry.

Under Obama far too many dev studios have closed down. The job creators just don't have the confidence that they used to.

If Perry becomes president, I hope he adds Bobby Kotick to his cabinet.

From THAT ad? No. Aside from listing faith in God as one of his qualifications (And with the general public, maybe not even that), that was a pretty non-threatening and unspecific ad. Now had they gone on about how his policies would reflect this list of values, maybe THEN it would scare off people in the general election.

Do you live in the US? Not anywhere I've ever lived, that's for sure. That ad would be eaten up by the general public.

Just saw/heard those Bachmann videos. It's kinda sad when you think about it

Let's not get too excited folks, it wasn't Mass Effect footage in the video but Mass Effect 2

Do you think US is ready for another conservative to the core politician from Texas? It's like Obama running a "liberal to the max" campaign.

"Conservative" does not have the same connotations as "liberal" in American society.

Seriously, anyone thinking that this ad is somehow radical and polarizing is in for a world of hurt this election. They can cut a handful of words (Maybe not even then in today's political climate) and tie a ribbon on this thing for the general election. It's practically pitch-perfect for general consumption outside of the length.

Maybe? Certainly the ones convinced that Obama is a socialist, which is more than I'd care to think about. Those people, who are dissatisfied with someone they think to be wildly liberal, are looking for someone further to the right to correct a perceived imbalance.

Of course, I live in Texas, where this sign sits alongside the busiest interstate in the state:

So your mileage may vary.

Well, America is generally a conservative country. I didn't see anything in that ad that would put off a lot of people- other than saying he's "conservative to the core". That even scares me. But, it's main message was regarding jobs jobs jobs... and the 40% of new jobs statistic was pretty impressive sounding.

It's heavily invested in biotech and medical innovations, but spends some cash on Aerospace and materials technology, including a little company called NanoTailor, which is trying to make buckytube based fabrics.

Successful companies pay back investments and it's supposed to be a self-funding fund, although they've already dumped more money into than they originally planned, so we'll see how that works out.

They do pre-seed investing, particularly spinning off medical technologies (more than half of the awards) that come out of state universities. You can see the list of all the awards, which comprise $134 million of the total $500 million allocated, here:

I suspect you'll be fond of it.

That video is great and yes that was Mass Effect 2 shown in his video. It probably refers to Bioware Texas, their new branch that is mostly working on SWTOR.

Rick Perry is going to win the election if he hammers home that youtube ad all over television.

Nowhere near the most fucked up sign I've seen on a Texas billboard. And frankly, I've always thought the ones in Arizona make ours look tame. I drove past one in the Clinton years that had pictures of gun-toting conservatives and Clinton in the same picture, that just happened to have all the guns pointed at him.

There are some serious crazy folks in Arizona.

Edit: You remember the stink from those "The most dangerous place for an African-American child is in the womb" billboards that went up in NY? They came from a Texas pro-life group, and I'd seen them here for awhile before they rolled them out in other states. If you get down near the border, you'll see them, in multiple languages, about "latino children".

Texas has a lot of highways and a lot of billboards. All sort of weird, offensive shit goes up on them.

This is a billboard in Lewis County WA that we pass when visiting my wife's family. Different message on each side, changes every month or so I think.

Landowner was very upset out I5 going right through his farm, billboard's been protesting everything government related in the decades since.

Republican leaders have been saying atheists aren't true Americans for my entire lifetime. While campaigning in '87, Bush Sr. said atheists shouldn't be considered citizens or patriots.

Unfortunately, it seems like this line of thinking has only grown stronger and more out in the open in recent years.

That is really fucking disgusting. Then again, it shouldn't come as too much of a shock to me. After all I was raised in rural Texas in a Catholic family (who still doesn't know I'm an Atheist)
