Box Office Report: Anti-Obama Doc Beats New Films With $6.3 Mil on Eve of GOP Convention

Galvanizing conservatives Dinesh D’Souza and John Sullivan’s documentary 2016: Obama's America grossed a stellar $6.3 million as it expanded nationwide over the weekend, beating a trio of three new films.

The anti-Barack Obama film, opening last month in only a few theaters, now boasts a domestic cume of $9.2 million, the top gross of the year for a documentary (excluding nature films). Bully was the previous crownholder with $3.5 million.

People hate Obama. Who knew?

I like how they have to put "excluding nature films". I wonder what it would be if they didn't.

Its republican fan fiction.

I hope that documentary's message filters into the convention. I want birthers up and down that stage saying crazy shit to scare independents away and embarrass the GOP.

Same thing happened to H.W. Bush when Pat Buchanan got on stage in '92 and started ranting about the culture war.

I'm probably just being way too sensitive about this, but I just don't like the optics on this post.

I was joking about the fact that the Republicans keep hyping up the racist stuff (which usually plays into the monkey crap) and that he was born in africa.

I was insulting them. Hence the "fake african" (he´s not, he´s american)

I did question posting it and did think about that and should have put some kind of disclaimer.

Re: Romney's birther joke:

Reince Priebus said:
“I mean, we have gotten to a place in politics that is ridiculous, and no one can say anything that is remotely humorous. And, you know, the president makes jokes about this all of the time.”

Once again: Sigh.

The messaging is getting so weird. "we need to cut entitlements, but Obama is cutting entitlements and that's bad! Obamacare sucks and needs to be repealed, but Romneycare was great!"
Romney understands that the media isn't going to challenge him in any serious way and he's taking full advantage of that.

Jeb Bush on Meet the Press: He really makes crazy positions and stupid assertions seem almost reasonable just by the way he speaks. Still some crazy positions and stupid ass assertions...

Jeb Bush may be the most overrated politician in America today. It's become a persistent meme of sorts that he's the smart one of the family, who would've made a great candidate if only he'd had a different last name. Fact is, he's as generic a conservative as they come, subscribing to most of their nonsensical platform. He just has a slightly better understanding of election strategy and what does and doesn't appeal to independents.

Yeah. And he gets to say "I gave health care to everyone without cutting Medicare like Obama did" every time he brings it up as well, which similarly the media won't call him on.

It's pretty smart actually. Any time anyone asks him "But Romneycare is just like Obamacare, isn't it?" he can just say "No, I didn't cut Medicare." It's a gigantic lie, but one he can get away with and it will be extremely effective.

Ell oh fucking ell.

The only reason anything is ever domiciled in the Cayman Islands is for tax avoidance. Seriously, there is no other reason to ever do anything there.

Who does he think he's kidding?

He knew Wallace wouldn't ask a response question. Not because Wallace is biased or in Romney's pocket (he's not), moreso because journalists tend to let candidates get away with that shit.

Well, technically it's not a lie. He didn't cut medicare, in fact. But the reason it's still a douchey statement is cause medicare is a federal program so he couldn't cut have cut it even if he wanted.

Romney: Akin’s Comments Hurt Republican Party

Mitt Romney believes Rep. Todd Akin's comment that "legitimate rape" rarely leads to pregnancy hurt the Republican Party as well as women, he said in an interview on "Fox News Sunday." Romney said that Democrats were using the comments to "cast a shadow" over the GOP even though the party had denounced Akin.

"I think it was a terrible statement on his part," Romney said. "It obviously is being used by Democrats to try and cast a shadow on our entire party and it's not."

Addressing Democrats' efforts to connect Akin to the whole Republican Party, Romney said: Democrats are "wise enough to understand that people in -- like myself, who have asked Todd Akin to get out of the race, are doing so because we vehemently disagree with what he said and believe it hurts our party and, I think, is damaging to women."

How can Romney say this when his own VP co-sponsored a bill with Akin that had similar, if not exactly, the same language? I want to see his answer to this when/if Akin's comments comes up in the debates.

If Dems had balls (and they have lately, just don't always know where to use 'em), they'd put that front and center for a while. Shout it from the rooftops, on every fucking network, in every interview, for a week straight: If Romney thinks this is so damaging why does his running mate support the same things Akin does? The rest will speak for itself while the GOP scrambles to save face.

They won't do it, though.

Because enough of the media lets him get away with it. Also, their recent denouncements are enough to plant that seed of truth in people's gut.

And that's what makes me nervous. It reeks of the media hammering away at Al Gore when there was all kinds of stuff going by mostly unsaid about Dubya. In the end, it helped him. Lots.

Dems really need to step it up and have a coordinated media frenzy against Romney's VP pick.

Romney said, “I’m very proud of what we did and the fact that we helped women and men and children in our state, and we did it without cutting Medicare, which obviously affects a lot of women.”

1) Medicare isn't being cut.
2) States do not have any Medicare TO cut. It's a federal program.
3) You vetoed the part of the bill that keeps it fiscally responsible. Luckily the legislature overrode you. So no, you didn't do health reform, the legislature did it in spite of you.

what part was that?

Still, with the convention set to resume Tuesday, the selling of access – a transaction often carefully shrouded in Washington, DC – looked to still be ready for a full display in Tampa. A group of moderate conservatives called the American Action Network advertised the chance to mingle with members of Congress and senior staff at an arena skybox overlooking the convention floor for $30,000. Full access to the group's intimate luncheons and hot ticket concerts were open to their biggest supporters – those who gave $250,000.

...

"The sort of events we're organizing are policy panels on retirement security, to hear from the top officials in the country," Conston said. "We're discussing real policy issues – A panel on jobs. A healthcare forum. We'll have some great speeches. And with our concerts, there's also a fun element to the convention."

Several of the party's wealthiest patrons will receive VIP treatment as the endless succession of receptions and cocktail parties keep them entertained.

One conservative group with ties to Republican House Majority Leader Eric Cantor is naming a pavilion on the sidelines of the convention after Dr. Miriam Adelson,
wife of the party's single biggest donor this year, Sands Casino mogul Sheldon Adelson – he's given $41 million, and counting. The pavilion will host women-themed discussions.

Another group, GOProud, which promotes inclusiveness for gay conservatives, will host an event called Homocon 2012 that will honor, among others, hedge fund billionaire Paul Singer, another of the largest GOP donors this cycle.

Many of the groups spending the most money are nonprofits that allow their donors to give money without their names being publicly disclosed. They are permitted to spend money to push for political candidates, as long as the majority of the money they raise also goes towards other purposes, such as advocacy of a particular issue.

...

The sway of big money will be just as evident in Charlotte next week when Democrats gather for the Democratic National Convention. As ABC News reported earlier this month, organizers sent around a menu to top fundraisers and donors, offering "premier credentials" that access luxury suites and the convention floor to those who donate the most. Someone who could raises $1 million topped the convention host committee's list, while top flight packages were also spelled out for those who donatde $100,000 directly, or raised more than $650,000 (Trustee Package), $500,000 (Piedmont Package), $250,000 (Dogwood Package) and on down.
