I've been reading a bit about of the last century of US politics and it always shocks me while much has changed, many of the issues are the same.

McGovern said this in 1972, over 40 years ago.

“What is the Southern Strategy? It is this. It says to the South: Let the poor stay poor, let your economy trail the nation, forget about decent homes and medical care for all your people, choose officials who will oppose every effort to benefit the many at the expense of the few—and in return, we will try to overlook the rights of the black man, appoint a few southerners to high office, and lift your spirits by attacking the ‘eastern establishment’ whose bank accounts we are filling with your labor and your industry.

Was just listening to NPR about congressional opposition to the Iran nuclear deal.

Its probably the most blatant showing of influence that the pro-Israel lobby has had in a while.

McGovern said this in 1972, over 40 years ago.

A South politician preaches to the poor white man
“You got more than the blacks, don’t complain.
You’re better than them, you been born with white skin,” they explain.
And the Negro’s name
Is used it is plain
For the politician’s gain
As he rises to fame
And the poor white remains
On the caboose of the train
But it ain’t him to blame
He’s only a pawn in their game

The deputy sheriffs, the soldiers, the governors get paid
And the marshals and cops get the same
But the poor white man’s used in the hands of them all like a tool
He’s taught in his school
From the start by the rule
That the laws are with him
To protect his white skin
To keep up his hate
So he never thinks straight
’Bout the shape that he’s in
But it ain’t him to blame
He’s only a pawn in their game

Bob Dylan - Only a Pawn In Their Game, which was performed during the March on Washington in 1963.

She's going to lose anyway.

I will say that it's pretty pathetic that because her ex helped her fund her education, all of a sudden the conservative spin has become "her education was fully paid for by her ex!" That's not true.

Even if he did fully pay for her education, I fail to see how that is at all relevant to anything ever.

I can proudly say that I voted for him in my elementary school's fake election. Nixon crushed him though.

Seriously, if that's all it is how on earth can that be used against someone as a negative? Someone break this down for me how this is supposed to be a bad thing instead of just nothing. Has she been saying she got to where she was without any help from men or something?

Largely because of a bad campaign, I think he would've won if things had gone his way and he got Ted Kennedy as his running mate as he always wanted and avoided the Eagleton scandal.

He would've been a great President too, I mean for fuck's sake he said on the campaign trail in 1972 that we should respect countries that democratically elect communist/socialist candidates, he would've completely reversed US foreign policy and things like the 1973 coup in Chile wouldn't have happened.

Because it can be spun as this (there is some testimony that might have gotten the ages wrong).

@derekahunter 18m
If you #StandWithWendy you stand next to a woman picking the pocket of her husband, abandoning her kids, and then lying about all of it. #p2
The GOP can use this to say she's not honest but they can't control the fact they can't control the rampant sexism in their party and traditional gender roles they want to preserve and which even with the actual story she challenges.

On a side note what liberals really use #p2? trolling #tcot is where its at.

But then the Chilean Miracle would have never happened!

Largely because of a bad campaign

This is revisionist history if I ever saw it. McGovern lost because Nixon was popular at the time and because McGovern was probably further left than voters at that time. The fact that his campaign was mired with controversy like his VP pick was minor in comparison. McGovern would not have won if he picked Ted Kennedy as his running mate.

But at the same time, no candidate has probably had more of an impact on the modern Democratic Party than McGovern. I think he's similar to Barry Goldwater in that both were tremendous losers at their time that were never going to become president, but both left a considerable impact on their respective parties for the future (although there is obviously difference between Goldwater and the social conservatives of today - I'm talking mostly about economics, states rights, etc).

EE is an idiot to imply this when its on most TROs

then follows it up with this gem

@EWErickson
The court order to keep Davis away from drugs and alcohol came only a few years after Davis claimed her mental health had been damaged.

Its not hard to see what angle he's going for. Though he's not always coherient. Some of the critisim boils down to something, something WOMEN!
Hey @KurtSchlichter just remember @WendyDavisTaxes stood with George Bush until Nancy Pelosi became Speaker in 2007.

Edit" jeez, Benghazi is literally like a reflex

Mark Levin said:
So he wouldn’t let his son play football – this pretend son that he has. It’s like Jimmy Stewart with the pretend rabbit.

Well let me tell you something Mr. President. I wouldn’t let my son be an ambassador under you. I’d much rather that he played football.

That last one is just idiotic. I mean, at least the others are mean and insulting. Ah, i get it now. Saying that ambassadors are in more of a danger under Obama than Football players. So yea, just as stupid and mean as the rest

Ugh. I think I saw the worst segment ever on MSNBC. Chris Matthews had on two anti-pot dudes (one of the a democrat, even!) talking about how Obama was wrong about his recent comments on pot being less dangerous than alcohol. One of the genius arguments was that pot makes you "slow". But most disappointing of all was that Matthews himself seemed to agree with these douches.

so, instead of scientists to discuss the issue he had two politicians on? That right there is the problem with cable news.

It seems that every thread talking about Australia the Aussies always seem to be complaining about welfare and immigrants.
.... AusGAF is far from conservative like really.. read the threads more closely and realize those people are a huge minority within the Australian community here which is predominately very left-wing. ;p

I have always viewed Australians as primarily pro-turtling and pro-"get two extra men at the beginning of your turn." But I admit to getting most of my geopolitical knowledge from RISK.

Don't even think it's a case of a vocal minority honestly. Like look at this thread for example: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=653079 the main people in support of this policy aren't even AUSTRALIAN !

Hell the most conservative guy in the AusPoliGAF isn't even anti-immigration.;p also I'm Australian if you don't realise already.

WHAT I THOUGHT YOU WERE AMERICAN /s

and yeah a cursory glance at each country's politics thread tells you that:
US/Canada/Australia GAF members (at least the ones there) are left-wing
UK members are not

dunno about any others because I don't even see threads for them

I'm really skeptical of shit like this but hey there ain't no polls or nothing so

Can Facebook predict who wins the Senate in 2014?

So far, we have trained our forecasting model on four key Senate elections in North Carolina, Alaska, Kentucky and Michigan. In those races, our two-party contest Facebook model shows Republicans potentially picking up one seat.

According to our Facebook forecast, in North Carolina, incumbent Sen. Kay Hagan, a Democrat, leads State House Speaker Thom Tillis, the leading Republican contender, by 52.7 to 47.3. In the open Michigan Senate race, Democratic Rep. Gary Peters leads the announced Republican candidate, former Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land, 55.6 to 44.4. And, assuming he survives a primary challenge, Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell holds a 53.9 to 46.1 lead over Alison Lundergan Grimes, the Democratic secretary of state. In Alaska, Democratic Sen. Mark Begich is in a dead heat whether he faces Joe Miller, the 2010 Republican Senate nominee, or Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell.
Bad news for Kay Hagan

I'd have to assume though that in any of these races, the incumbent would have a pretty solid advantage for being in the Senate for at least 6 years before the election day.

I also don't mean to stereotype, but wouldn't Democrats generally perform better with a more tech savvy base?

Can somebody explain to me what PPP means?

I understand that its how much spending power your money has. Does this mean that the only western nation with a higher quality of life than the United States is Norway because its the only country where your money is really worth more than it is in the USA?

In my elementary school's fake election, I voted for Bob Dole.

I didn't know anything about politics (my parents were Clinton supporters), I just liked his name better.

I voted for Bush I in my elementary school election because the word "Republican" sounded nicer than "Democrat".

It's a way to take out the distorting effects of the forex market and measure a more 'true' value comparison of the underlying value of the currency.

It emerges from the idea that everything a
Has the same price (in its local currency) once you take out the differing costs of transport costs, tarrifs and political factors. See the big Mac index

I'm sad to say I was pro Bush in 2004 but I didn't follow politics that much (parents took me to a gore event in 2000). I knew I didn't like Bush but being in the south with the Iraq war I gave bush way to much credit. I was in middle school though

Edit: now that I think about it I think I was pro Kerry but pretended to be for bush at school and have permanently confused myself. I remember being pissed off at the swift boating and paying a lot of attention to rather-gate.
I firmly moved left in HS when the cultural wars started to heat up and I realized the Iraq war was a mistake and failure. Racial and economic issues only hit me when I got to college to. Always learning.

The '96 election was the first time I even paid attention to politics. I didn't "vote" in school until the 2000 election, in which case I voted for Bush.

I hope Mitch Landrieu runs and kicks his ass

Fuck this "family values" hypocrite

He's about the only Democrat they could run, but I think he'd piss a lot of people off if he ran if he gets re-elected for a second term as mayor.

It's Vitter's race to lose.

Oh, and State Rep. Steve Scalise will get Vitter's Senate seat. Book it.

Again, it's hard to make definitive statements on what would have happened. He would have become president in January 1973; the coup happened in September but was planned for quite some time. Just as JFK was rolled by the CIA on Cuba, I wouldn't be surprised if the same happened to a hypothetical President McGovern. IE being kept in the dark, informed late, and then given the hot potato with little time.

The CIA was less governable back then, compared to now. That's not to say they are completely reined in by the executive branch today of course; I doubt Obama knows about every current existing CIA operation.

Scalise is in the US house (used to be my rep when I lived there)

Edit: FLOTUS got game

This might be one of the greatest things ever. That expression after is gold.

It's odd seeing Chris Christie's inauguration broadcast live on cable news. He's still just a lowly governor, for the time being.
