Fair enough, but let me rephrase it then.

He's a biracial black man who grew up in a times when racism was far more pervasive and prevalent, and was born in Kansas and lived in Hawaii - not exactly hot beds of AA population. It's really infuriating to see folks who almost certainly have had to deal with racism on a far lesser scale than anyone from that era having the gall to lecture Obama about how he "doesn't get it".

I think that President Obama has had something of a different experience, maybe. I mean, don't get me wrong, he absolutely gets it and is absolutely right about accepting a seat at the table, but he didn't grow up in urban areas that are still effectively segregated. He grew up in various states and countries and had a much different experience from many black folks of that time.

When I talk to my mom about growing up in the sixties as a kid and what she thought about the Civil Rights Act, she laughs and says that as a young child, she didn't notice it so much because they were the one black family in their neighborhood and were thus "okay." Not that she didn't have to deal with racism or anything, but it was a different experience being the daughter of a military man, having lighter skin, and being in a medium-sized town in Washington State. Her experience is very different from the black experience in Los Angeles, Houston, New Orleans, Baltimore, Detroit, NYC, etc.

I guess my argument is not to map some idea of "getting it" to black people just because they're a) black and b) grew up in the '60s. POTUS definitely gets the struggle and I'm not criticizing him at all, but maybe it's just something about assuming that black folks from that time understand race issues in the same way that gets me. I mostly agree with you, though.

Since I'm here: I have lurked this page for a long while, since before I signed up for the site, even, so even though I'm not really much of a prominent member here, I guess I will share my info, even if only for demographic purposes:

Your sexual orientation? Straight, married with two kids under 4 years old

Where Are You From? Grew up in rural backwoods Oregon

Where Do You Live? Outside of Seattle WA

How Old Are you? Upper 30s.

Favorite Type of Music? Umm, folk, classical, rock country, some pop...I like lots of music.

What are your hobbies (other than gaming)? Gardening, quilting, cooking, mathematics, animal husbandry. LOVE horror fiction.

I am sort of at a strange intersection of cultures. My mother is American, my dad is from Mexico. Was raised Mormon, am atheist now. Grew up in rural Oregon, hung out with extreme hippies and rednecks, can identify with both. Married to a woman from Hong Kong, have two kids, and trying to make sure they understand all the cultures they come from is going to be a challenge.

Sure, Cybit! Some time when I have a few hours for some Civ V (IOW, actually a lot of hours), that would be fun. I have long since learned to take my beatings from human players like a champ.

I only have one strategy for winning, which is "Choose India, produce a lot of food, build only four cities." I just say that out front because that's the only strategy I really have and you would figure it out inside of about three turns anyway.

It's so interesting to see the stark contrasts between person preferences and political leanings. There's literally no correlation whatsoever, lol

Sexual orientation is relevant in GayGAF. Not PoliGAF.

I actually disagree with this. For demographic purposes, it makes things a lot more interesting.

Keep 'em coming, guys!

Hillary will be in Indiana Tuesday. Here it all comes I guess.

Only candidate not to announce a stop here is Bernie.

Where Are You From? Suburban Chicago
Where Do You Live? Chicago, after a four year stint in Boston

Favorite Type of Music? I think I keep coming back to Indie Rock, Classic Rock, Jazz, and Classical. Studying music for a couple years in college really did give me eclectic musical tastes, but it's hard to really name everything. The last five artists in my Spotify account are: Julia Holter, James Blake, Andrew Bird, Tomeka Reid, and The Naked and Famous.
Profession or Career interest? Computer programmer. I never worked on a campaign, but my last job was working for one of the Obama Campaign spinoff companies. Currently I work on education (literacy, specifically) software.

As a cross between my work and political interests, I spend a decent amount of my spare time working on volunteer software projects related to transit advocacy. I think reigning in sprawl and aggressively strengthening public transit is a too-often overlooked way to ease the burden on the poor. Car ownership is very expensive, and a drivers license is a privilege as opposed to a right (itself a good thing, given how wildly dangerous cars are), so I think it's insane that so much of our economy is locked behind automobile access. Currently I'm working on a project to analyze and present the case for bus rapid transit in various corridors around Chicago.

Favorite video game(s)? Suikoden II, Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy Tactics, Folklore, Valkyria Chronicles
What are your hobbies (other than gaming)? Cooking, Biking, playing music

I was raised Catholic, my parents are crazy religious, I was coerced into marching in Pro-Life rallies and was an altar boy for most of my youth. I grew out of that and just want to live in a world where people are good to each other. I don't know enough about politics to have detailed opinions on much at least when compared to the rest of PoliGAF, but I know the evils of conservatism and view the Democrats as the only thing stopping an Idaho boy from living in a theocracy. (this is an oversimplification, but it mostly works for getting a picture of what I'm about.)

Your ethnicity and gender?-hispanic/latina transwoman
Your sexual orientation?-Mostly heterosexual. I really loooove guys *winks at Hayden Christensen circa 2004*
Where Are You From?-A country in central america Reagan helped screw over
Where Do You Live?- sin city, MA
How Old Are you? 24!!-And still full of energy despite insomnia.
Favorite Type of Music?-Classical/orchestral, any and every genre really, there are good songs and music everywhere!
Favorite video game(s)?-The Legend of Zelda, Metal Gear series, God of War, Devil May Cry, Tales of Symphonia, saints Row (yo female boss yoooo), Smash Bros., Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter and a lot more!
What are your hobbies (other than gaming)?-I love watching movies (have over 200 BR's), reading history, and following politics, which brings me to...

Basically I am a very, super progressive person who understands the realities of how it works here, and realized how beneficial and important incremental change is. Went from a conservative minded catholic to a very liberal, progressive (back to) catholic after renouncing my faith 7 years previously.

- 26 white male
- straight
- from NY
- I usually joke with people at work because my music play list with go from a 1940s blues song, to Daft Punk, to a song from the Pokemon Anime. I have odd tastes and a rather large amount of music I like. I tend to not pick specific genres I like, rather, I usually go for specific songs or artists. And even then, specific artists are not even consistent. I like some Daft Punk songs, for example.
- software engineer
- I have lots of favorite games, so I usually pick from based on era or console. Like, TF2 is my favorite game. But so is Smash 4. But so is Banjo-Kazooie. It's too hard for me to rate them like that.
- I like nothing more than to be left alone in my house with by budgie and fish. I don't like going out much, and don't drive. I like math puzzles, riddles and logic games. I also play the board game Carcassonne with my family every sunday. I love to cook, so I make them a nice dinner every week. Which is sometimes hard since they're very picky and usually take out or make frozen meals, so I usually have to be creative with what I can and cannot serve and what I need to substitute so it's edible for them. When people say "oh, every week I make 5 chickens on Sunday and eat the same dinner every day to stay healthy" I don't understand how they can stand it. I try to make a brand new recipe at least once a week and never, ever, ever eat the same dinner twice in the same week unless I am absolutely dying of sickness or something and frozen chicken patties is literally the only food in the house.
- I only participate in Poligaf once every 4 years.

-I'm cis hetero male

-I was born in the mid 1960s

-Born and raised in MI, lived in Chicago over 20 years.

- My musical tastes are a bit broad, but nothing remarkable. I came of age in the late 70s and early 80s and love punk and new wave, two-tone ska, and what was college rock of the time. I thought the early 90s were an incredible time for music as well. I also like music from my older siblings and parents, meaning 60s classic rock and big band music!

- I work IT in the financial industry

- In my teens, I was a moderate Republican. Between my going left and the country going right (economically) I eventually identified as a Democrat. But I am a pragmatist above all, and view politics as engineering more than ideology.

-Hobbies: used to be huge into comics and video games, only casually now. I play Heroclix (superhero miniatures) a lot, and board games a little. I still enjoy class videogames quite a bit. I'm quite into movies, used to be very into indies, not as much now. (I saw Reservoir Dogs 3 times in its initial theatrical run, for instance).

If I were straight I'd be the quintessential example of a Bernie voter.

(I'd like to imagine I'd still not vote for him even if I were.)

As a white 20 year old straight male, I felt like a special snowflake when I told people I voted for Hilary. Everyone that knew me pegged me as a real bernie bro. I am still offended
