Polygon - Nintendo confirms you will have to pay to use the Switch 2’s C button

"Like fly's trolls are flocking to shit news fucking pony"

This potentially confusing sentence infers:

There is a singular fly
The fly has gained possession of trolls
The fly's trolls are gathering in mass within the vicinity of shit news
Shit news is an entity capable of fucking
Shit news is fucking a pony

To make the sentence more clear for future readers:

"Fly's trolls are flocking to watch shit news fuck a pony."

All of them charge for online multiplayer. The C button is meant to be used with other people. So of course you need the online service to use it..

damn, how is it that so many people don't realise that free 2 play games exist and don't need to pay for the online service to play them with friends, but still might want to chat while doing so? paying 20 bucks to chat online is insane

It was free with the Wii and 3DS. The only way to make the C button free is to make NSO free. They can't do it. They are a publicly traded company.

it's 20€ per account.
other consoles allow all users on the main console to use the benefits of their subscriptions, such as playing online and playing games included in the subscription.

so with NSO, if you have 2 people who use the system and want to use its online benefits you are at 40€ a year... if you have 3 people it's 60€...
and that's where the upsell offer for the Family Membership which is 35€ a year.

so in reality for many people it will be 35€/$ a year. and for what? so you can play like 2 games online that you otherwise couldn't, as all the free 2 play games that are taking up the bulk of people's time playing online these days can be played without NSO.

so in the end you could possibly be in a situation where all you want is an easy way to chat with friends while playing rocket league online, and that will cost you 20€ a year to do while it would be free on every other system out there. and if you have more than 1 person using that Switch and plays free 2 play stuff with friends, it's 35€ a year to chat online.

it's bad enough that console manufacturers still charge to play paid games online, but at least Microsoft gives you free cloud saves and voice chat, and Sony also has free voice chat... even tho they still charge for cloud saves.

so don't have children :messenger_tears_of_joy:

They only did that because 7 people share accounts to be cheap AF. And MS lets you share online but not games across accounts unless you are on the same "HOME" console. There is a catch everywhere and it all stems from people always gaming the system.

The level of whining in this thread for something nobody gives a damn about.

NSO is like less than $2 a month.

All of your incessant whining is why we got this stupid GameChat in the first place. Now I have to look at people's sorry faces on Smash Bros. after I defeat them because of you.

I think people are taking their eye off the real problem and falling for clickbait. PS has a share button as well. You can technically use it for captures still, but it's kind of pointless without their sub.
That's absolutely not true. You can transfer the screenshots & videos to a usb drive and no sub is needed. Same with cropping videos - it's not a paid feature.

I assumed the 'C' button was for chat, and since chatting online usually requires a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, I figured they weren't actually selling the button itself but offering a new way to communicate using an existing Online subscription. Am I missing something?

Who will you even be chatting with if you dont pay for Nintendo Online?
Who really thought Nintendo qas going to let anyone use it outside of NSO membership really?
So the chat function won't work without NSO......
I mean who thought this would be free? Surely kept behind their subscription.
Pretty obvious this would require an online subscription to use.
Microsoft confirms that you have to Pay for Gamepass and Sony for PS+… Polygon being Polygon…
Is the C hat botton… Of course that we are going to need NSO for voice chat… 🙄
Nothingburger. Anyone who has any use for this button will have an NSO sub anyway as it's
An online community button feature is available if you paid for online subscription

Nintendo confirms that online capabilities like chatting or playing with friends will be attached to paying a subscription, just like Sony and MS.
Exactly!
Mofos complaining about the stupidest shit I swear. This is wild.
It's a strange take. It is an online button, similar to the share button. It's for online gaming. We already pay for online gaming on all the consoles if we want to use it.

I know this will sound like a big revelation, but... free-to-play games are a thing and they do not require an online subscription on any platform.
You are able to play these free-to-play games with party chat on PlayStation and Xbox without paying for any subscription, you won't be able to do so on Nintendo.
Also, having a damn paywalled button on a game controller is pretty fucking dystopian.

Where did you get that info from? I find it hard to believe that Nintendo would shoot themselves in the foot by charging for something in a game they didn't even develop, just ported to their system, especially if it's free on other platforms. Take Fortnite, for example: if players had to pay Nintendo just to talk to teammates, even though the game runs on Epic's servers, that would be wild. But seriously, where are you getting this from?

NaniDafuqWhat?

The correct structure of the sentence and its meaning are paywalled behind the $20 online subscription.

The article doesn't mention basic game chat like Fortnite on Switch being locked behind that button, just the "Discord-like chat app." I believe that's a feature for friends to use with each other, not randos in f2p slop.

Until March 31, 2026, GameChat can be used without a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Afterwards, a Nintendo Switch Online membership will be required to use GameChat.

I had already edited that out with proper wording.
You can play with friends in a ton of f2p games, though? Never played Fortnite or Fall Guys?

If you want to use the NSO discord-like chat app you will need to pay a sub.

If you want to play with friends and chat directly through the game like it works now on Switch, no sub is needed.

How is this news? The click bait rage farming articles have been pretty good. It was pretty clearly announced that gamechat features are tied to their online subscription once the free trial for everyone ends in March of next year.

I pay both Sony and Microsoft to use their chat features and it's been pretty normal for a while. The rage cycles and how quickly people get caught up in them is pretty fun to watch.

You do?

My man, the other solution is literally using an app on your phone which you *need* a NSO sub for.

Add this to the list of dumb shit that will never be used.

They better put an option to disable the button, so that you don't get a fucking pop-up that interrupts your game "Please pay for our dumb service".

Isn't that the whole point? It will be the only console where you can't chat with your friends without paying a subscription fee which is why everyone is rightly complaining about it. You're right though, pay walled chat IS the stupidest shit.

Nintendo has truly designed the whole thing to try to milk their consumers from all angles, they're failing to realize that their success comes from the mainstream market, occasional gamers and kids that nowadays play free stuff on their smartphones.
The Switch 2 is perceived like a ripoff even by core gamers. They're not in a good position beyond the first 2-3 months where early adopters buy everything in any case.
