OK, I love firefox, and I especially love the pop-up blocker, but I've noticed recently that at www.hometheaterforum.com I'll suddenly get these unexplained tabs opening that have ads in them for subwoofers and stuff. What the hell? Is this something new??

Are you using a recent version with the options set to open all new windows in tabs rather than popups? If so, anything that gets past the popup blocker (and a few things still do) then you'll get that effect.
