I have a CHALLENGE to SPICE THINGS UP or POPGAF maybe since this thread is full of nothign but shade at this point ;_;
ALL OF YOU could nominate ONE ALBUM from UR FAVE for me to LISTEN IN FULL to and REVIEW.
I will do it as quickly as possible and will be HONEST, OPEN and SUBJECTIVE.
RECEIPTS
It was clear from the start that Nicki probably needs to seek psychiatric care.
Roman Holiday is such a bizarre song. I don't even know if I like it or not. It's just this weird, bizarre song. The intro with the weird accent is just BRAIN NUMBING though I will admit Nicki's rap has always been fierce. The annoying breaks to the weird British rap parts is just weird and the HUMMING parts were kind of haunting.
Come on a Cone has a pretty sick backing track but the rap
really isn't doing anything for me at all. I will respect Nicki and give her AN EXTRA STAR for putting out music that nobody else would even try to put out. It seems like she doesn't really care and it results in this weird and unique sound.
And what the fuck is with that DICK IN MY FACE line
I Am Your Leader is another one of those tracks where the product actually doesn't sound that bad - and I kind of like the way Nicki alternates between actual rap and those robotic vocals as well. Also STOP TELLING ME TO SUCK DICK it's getting BORING ALREADY.
The popping of
Beez in the Trap is absolutely infectious. This track is probably one of my favourites from the first half of the album. The hook is catchy, the chorus is somewhat basic but it remains with you long after you've stopped listening to the song. I absolutely cannot stand 2 Chainz verse in this song though.
More great production as
HOV Lane opens but then Minaj opens her mouth and the quality just disappears. Unfortunately I can't say the same for
Roman Reloaded which is just awful Nicki Minaj vocals mixed with Lil Wayne talking about how much he loves cocaine and pussy. This song was easily the most painful and physically gave me back pain. There was actually a part where Lil Wayne was just breathing heavilly. Uggh
A more welcome and slower paced song was
Champion whcih featured Nas and Drake and some random. Whoever raps in the middle of this song really needs to go and see a respiratory specialist or something.
Right By My Side is easily the least offensive track on the album up until this point - besides the inclusion of scum of course. Everything in this song actually sounds radio friendly so I wasn't surprised to find it was a single and had a video attached to it. How did I miss this one POP-GAF?
Sex In The Lounge follows and it's boring, embarrassing and just downright misogynistic.
SLAYSHIPS / POUND THE ALARM ARE AMAZING AND Y'ALL WILL DEAL.
Continuing the OBVIOUS and NOTICEABLE upward trend,
Whip It is an incredibly fun and upbeat track that I absolutely LOVE. It has to be the next single to be quite fucking honest. Catchy, fun and MInaj's voice is just less annoying. DAT DANCE BREAK.
Na na na na na we go *.*
Automatic on the other hand is quite boring and underwhelming - Nicki seems to be channelling EUROTRASH with this one except it's not unapologetic and it doesn't do anything for me. It's not offensive like some other stuff on this album, but it certainly isn't amazing >_>.
My LAWD, the production on
Beautiful Sinner is amazing too! Sure, the lyrics aren't that great, but it gives me these weird Faithless - Insomnia teas and to be hones that's never a bad thing.
Marilyn Monroe must actually be turning in her grave right now having this song named after her, and while it's not offensive either it's just really nothing super special. Any star in the same "genre" of Nicki could put out something like this. I have the same sentiments for
Young Forever. It's really weird how
Fire Burns is placed in the album - it seems like just the right time to put a more slower song so you can calm down from being bombarded by the PSYCHO BANSHEE ON HEAT for the rest of the
Gun Shot is just a NOTHING FILLER song.
Contrary to MORE THAN POPULAR OPINION, I actually don't mind
Stupid Hoe though it does feel like an all out assault on all my five senses. The production and the beat is so fast tempo I can't
NOT like it, but that fucking awful UHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH part of the song is just INSUFFERABLE.
Turn Me On is also great but not really sure if I should be crediting Nicki for that one tbh. I enjoyed listening to this one since it wasn't typical Minaj and was a NICE BREAK before I got on the LONG HOME RUN.
Va Va Voom on the other hand is a bonus track but it's so much more strong than the other abortions on this album, not really sure why this a bonus track tbh - though I don't think it's as strong as Pound The Alarm of Starships.
Masquerade is also one of those tracks that seems to be much stronger than the other stuff on the main album itself too. One has to wonder who is choosing these songs tbh - I really love the chorus to this one.
I think the biggest problem with Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded is that the album is clearly TWO ALBUMS. One is a rap record whie the other is a dance pop record. Not sure why Nicki didn't go the same route Outkast did all those years ago, because I personally feel her Pop side is much stronger as an artist.
I also think that her wanting to have her cake and eat it is going to be detrimental for her in the future. She is clearly spreading herself too thin between the urban markets and the pop markets and tbqh I don't see it for her if she continues to fragment her audiences like this.
This album was SLIGHTLY better than what I was expecting, but generally not much. The second half is definitely better overall and more listenable / less overtly offensive than the former half. Despite this album getting an average score of three stars, I am awarding it two. >_>
