Honestly, Lady Gaga has a higher chance of benefitting from a VMA performance than Katy does. She's being treated to the "headliner" treatment at this point, and she'll no doubt make headlines with whatever she does.
As far as the music video though, Katy has a higher chance of benefitting than Gaga. The latter runs the risk of being like every other Gaga video; alienating and over-the-top. Might end up being too insular for her own good, ala Born This Way.

When someone says, "So and so has a billion dollars and you say, "Well, so-and-so is a flop and even they have a billion dollar empire" you're doing a bit of cute eliding of the difference between the two. And I think that it was probably quite intentional and that you had every intention of making this dodge if / when you were called on it, but were otherwise planning on letting it stand.

The people who are going in on Beyoncé the most are fans of Christina and Britney. Is that really much of a surprise?
Beyoncé's flop album with no hits sells 2.5 million, lands her a superbowl deal, and grosses her more than $100 million on tour. Christina's flop albums struggle to scan gold, and spawned no tours. Britney's keeps getting them hit singles but her latest album can't sell as much as Beyoncé's album which, again, had no hits. And the Femme Fatale tour... do we even need to talk about that?
Not to mention that through it all, Beyoncé has maintained her looks, voice, and body.
Even at her low point, Beyoncé is still doing it bigger and better.
