*wonders why a thread about racism managed to gain 3-pages worth of replies*

*pokes head in*

One thing that seems to be common is that there is always a large preference for lighter skin coloured people in our world, and this seems to be among most races. All my brown friends have told me about how their parents are happy to see their kids go out with lighter coloured brown people than darker coloured. I also so a documentary a while back regarding how black people were racist among each other in a similar way, where the lighter skinned blacks made racist remarks towards darker skinned blacks. It's terrible that even amongs their own racial group, people exhibit a brand of racism.

Thankfully I haven't had a direct confrontation with racism although some events might have happened but I didn't pay too much attention to them.

I think it stems from the working class/poor being out in the sun more doing manual labor giving them darker skin. Thus the more affluent would have a lighter skin which would I'm sure eventually was perceived as more regal and later as "better".

Nah Honey, don't change your avatar, I think it is totally awesome! I did from the moment I saw it.
And hey, don't let people's jives throw you off, if you want to post a thread about the shit that happened recently do it.

Thanks for the avatar love :p

Anyway I don't post threads about my ex anymore on GAF because they usually get out of hand...PM me if you want to know more. I'm over it now though, I'm 90% better over her, finally. The last 10% is just going to take time, no worries.

Yikes, now I'm derailing my own thread :lol

it's going to come out of you and it's going to taste so good
I'm half Filipino and half white. I had a few isolated incidents of racism against me growing up, but I'm fairly racially-ambiguous looking so most people can't tell what the hell I'm supposed to be. Actually a lot of the racism I got was from other Filipino kids when I lived in a Filipino enclave, being the "white kid" in my neighborhood.

I know my parents probably got way more crap about it than I did. My dad has very dark skin and I know people were giving them disapproving glares when they were out together.

Sometimes you can also see how much it bothers some people that they can't figure out your race and pidgeonhole you; you might as well be androgenous to them.

Most of the problems with discrimination I had growing up was from being poor more than anything.

I'm white, blue eyes, blonde hair and all that. Everytime I'm in Asia I'm subjected to some form of racism. Mostly it results in positive treatment, but sometimes it's the exact opposite. It can be dangerous to be white.

Travel, and you will find racism. Does it bother me? Hell yes. Do I think anything can be done about it? Not in my lifetime.
