Power-Up leaked to the Internets! Oh teh nos

Kobun's book needs more pimping and more buying! Come on GAF, use it as anger management for all of those Halo 2 vs Half Life 2 threads!

Also, the moogle comment on pg117 is clearly wrong. Nobody should be surprised that I notice these things.

Wasn't that the first FF game they appeared in?

Originally they were from Seiken Densetsu, right?

I haven't played through SD1, so if they're in there, that would be close, but as far as I know (and can google), it came out in 1991.

Final Fantasy III (famicom) on the other hand came out in 1990, and had an entire town of them. The later FF game moogle sprites are nearly identical.

EDIT: Okay, I really have no idea which one came first. I'd guess FF3, but then again I don't have the actual ship dates.

The book's on my Xmas list, and if I don't get it (which is likely), I'm picking it up afterwards.

Will you have a list of corrections on your website?

:lol @ Sho Nuff

According to GameFaqs

4/27/90 for Final Fantasy 3
6/08/91 for Seiken Densetsu

Don't know how accurate that is though.

Yeah, there were moogles in FF3j, and a (lone) chocobo in FF2j. Those were the first games to use those characters (though a chocobo and a moogle first made Western appearances in FF Adventure on GB)... I remember reading it and wanting to email Chris about it but I forgot :P

I enjoyed the book, and happily paid Kobun his money for a job well done.

But I must admit that I preferred Game Over, which I read shortly after finishing Power Up.

What are you doing here? How did you get past the GA security? :)

Buy the book now! It's a nifty read on an equally nifty subject, well worth the cash. Plus, you'll also get that warm and fuzzy feeling knowing you're donating to the Kohler Fund, which helps educate the grandeur of Nintendo games and systems to needy children the world over. Do it for the kids!

Well, yeah, jeez. I prefer Game Over too.

Game Over was more enjoyable, but of course it was engineered to be. It's one long narrative on a really fascinating time period. Power-Up, on the other hand, is a brilliant sort of cultural autopsy. I can't read the entire thing at once; I stick to a section at a time and absorb it (except for the chapters where I basically know everything coming, I suppose).

The argonaut chapter was great.

By the way, those things in FFIII were Moogles?

Moogles were the creatures living on the island controlled by the wind (with the winding mountain path) with Dorga/Doga. This is pretty late in the game, and they were pretty obviously moogles - I can try and dig up a save state for a screenshot, but you would need a pretty half-assed TV to mistake them for anything else.

Is that story about the origin of the Mario name confirmed? I've heard so many versions now, i don't think any of them is right :)

There are times when I'm glad that forums are more dependent on the moderators than the "rules". Laws were made for the benefit of man, not for the detriment of him... so flexibility is welcome. I somehow think that threads by authors/designers/etc. are acceptable IF they are clearly more than just "BUY MY GAME, PLEASE" ... and even "BUY MY GAME, PLEASE" threads might be acceptable if they are from a long-time poster who the entire board admires/tolerates.

P.S. Is DJ really banned? If so, I'm going to have to remember Mike on my Christmas card list; Mike AND Drinky this year -- scary.
