Red/Blue wasn't standardized until 2000. Before that, it was typically the opposite, although each network was free to do their own thing.
I think he should have been a lot more aggressive. First of all, there's a lot legitimately there to be aggressive about, but also if he's not that he falls apart. Without it, in the resulting vacuum are his opinion on things, which are senseless, and the gigantic holes/weaknesses in his past and character. He has to make the story about how much she and the establishment suck and how visionary he is at recognizing exactly the why and how, otherwise it's a disaster because he is what he is.
Incredible that he was pretty much bragging about his overseas real estate and hotels in other countries, too.
Yeah, yeah, so he doesn't want to pay taxes because it would be "squandered." It's a representative democracy that exists with a modicum of consent from the voters -- not an arbitrary by-fiat system in which kleptocrats would would prefer to avoid taxes in any case, really. It's profoundly damaging and contemptuous of the rule of law.

Pretty much. The reason why hyper-connected career politicians like Hilary Clinton are supposed to suck is because they are supposed to be in the hands of major lobbying groups. Trump himself IS a lobbying group. It's like, instead of electing a politician bought by corporations, you just elect the corporation itself. If you have a problem with "crooked" hillary, the very same faults apply tenfold to Donald Trump.
And I say this as someone who didn't want Clinton to win the candidacy. I agree she's establishment. But if that matters to you, then there is no way you can vote for donald trump, he's the same way. Except he also comes with a shitload of awful baggage attached as well.

They keep calling him out on it. If he gets away with it, it's because people don't care. Perhaps their supposed reason for hating hilary, that she's establishment, isn't really why they hate hillary, or isn't the reason they support trump, and they just don't want to say the real reasons.

Not in terms of political involvement. When he starts talking about how she's now planning on responding to ISIS or how she's been around for decades watching the country regress he fundamentally has a point. Now, no one should be blaming Hillary for shitty airports and police shooting unarmed black people, but it's the kind of blunt truth he can hit her with much like other nominees being in the pocket of special interests etc.
Now I'm strategizing for Trump which is ridiculous, but it's not like he has no ammunition.

Just wanted to say that I thought the moderator was particularly weak, there was lots of shouting, interruptions and non-answers (from Trump mostly) that went completely unchecked. As such there was very little actual 'debate' and a lot of grandstanding. I thought Trump did poorly, but I could totally see his more vehement supporters thinking he won comfortably.
Is the moderation usually this lax? And can we expect stronger moderation in the next debates?

Trump was interrupting from the get go and rarely stopped. Makes Uncle Joe's transgressions vs Palin mute. Trump lost this debate on every level. His only line of attack, trade deals was trumped by his lack of patriotism on wanting an economic collapse in 2006. Guy is a Democratic plant. It went according to plan.
