Did 'The Wall' even come up? I don't remember either one of them mention it.

Guess we have that AND Bill's infidelity to look forward to in debate 2.

I don't know if there is some sort of culture shock/ cultural divide-thing going on here, but european politics are not like this.

She was well composed and actually ansered the questions she was given, she was pretty great imo.

Trump literally spent a sentence or two rambling some incoherent nonsense as a direct answer to any given question and then went on multiple tangents to:

-accuse Clinton/Obama of being responsible for something
-gloating about his wealth/company/income
-telling his story of everything moving to China/Mexico
-interrupting her
-rinse and repeat

Like, this is has been a truly poor showing so far. I don't see how anyone could call this halfway decent at all. It was truly terrible by any standard.
I'm almost afraid to watch any further.
TBH, it's pretty shocking for us Americans too. 2012 was fucking nuts, but by the general, you had two sane candidates running and could have actual debates on issues.

Honestly, I think this is pretty unprecedented no matter how you look at it.

The "Trump did well at the start" stuff is mostly coming from the conventional wisdom that Trump's strongest pitch is an anti-free trade one aimed squarely at rust belt/swing state voters. At the start of the debate, he did get to talk about that stuff, and he was able to make allegations (about Clinton's support for various free trade agreements) that put her in the position of having to defend her record.

The fact that his accusations were largely inarticulate and didn't have a ton of substance doesn't really factor in, at least in terms of the Beltway pundit thinking about who Trump was trying to reach during this debate.

Of course, after that, there's pretty much no spinning his performance as positive, despite the best efforts of Grima Wormt- er, Kellyanne Conway.

Trump totally does that thing where he clumsily reuses words he just heard.

Yep.

Hillary says "cavalier", one minute later Trump says it as well. And you just fucking KNOW he just decided to incorporate it in his 20 word counting word salad. His speech pattern should be studied, it's so bizarre.

i just watched the whole thing, and Trump saying "the nuclear" and "the cyber" must be among the weirdest stuff i've heard in a while.

He's said "the nuclear" before, it's weird. He had a weird rambling quote a while back that was something like "You know what, these countries, they're going to advance. And you know what that means? They're going to get the ultimate. You know what the ultimate is, right? AKA The nuclear. And once you get the nuclear, you're at the ultimate."

I don't understand why interviewers and the like never say to Donal "Okay Donald, you have just said a lot of words but none of them are an answer to the question I just asked. Could you please answer my question?"
Or something to that effect. Is it because they want to seem neutral? They would be seen as bullying Donald if they try to press him for a real answer?

I really can't believe how tone-deaf Trump was on race and law. I mean, its just almost unreal how undisguised his racism is. Doesn't even have any nuance or depth to his positions, really crazy. I guess I shouldn't be surprised but it's just so alienating, it's nuts that he's not using the debate to try to clarify any of the perceptions of himself. Anyway, fine, let him look like a giant racist asshole. Guess its better he's wearing it on his sleeve, in a way.

Oh I doubt that too. I'm just curious if he'I'll even walk away from last night thinking "huh maybe I should do some prep for the next two".

He won't, he'll just dig for more insults to throw at Hillary. That's his prep. As long as Hillary remains calm and cool and collected, she got this. Hell, after this debate, she already got this. And im making sure I make my vote heard in November.

So we have to get very , very tough on cyber and cyber warfare. It is - - it is a huge problem . I have a son. He 's 10 years old . He has computers. He is so good with these computers, it ' s unbelievable. The security aspect of cyber is very , very tough . And maybe it ' s hardly doable.

I'm still in disbelief

He did no debate prep. He kind of mocked the idea honestly.

All his experiences in previous debates he was on stage with between like 5 and 15 people, which meant he was never too far from someone screaming to get a word in and rescue him from having to expand on anything.

His press and rally appearances are either done by teleprompter or are feverish free association things where he randomly jumps from topic to topic.

Essentially, he was lazy, didn't do his homework (and Clinton did and hit him on this) and went up against someone who has debated 1v1 against orators like Barack Obama and Bernie Sanders on multiple occasions.

The only question now is if he tries to right the ship or goes full sulk and declines to debate again.
Very well put !

It showed that he didn't prepare for the debate, he had nothing intelligent to say.

I don't know which outcome would be preferable tbh. I can't see him improving dramatically in the next go around, but I'm scared off the media crowning him for the achievement to talk for 2 minutes without sounding like an idiot, which wouldn't be off the table if they thought his first 20 minutes were pretty good.

"I'm going to cut taxes biglig, and you're going to raise taxes biglig"

Can this stupid fucker learn to actually enunciate before debating in front of an entire nation, seriously, while this is totally hilarious to watch because he's essentially just going "BUHBUHBUHBUHBUHBUHBUHBUHBUHBUHBUHBUH!!!!", it is totally terrifying that it actually got to this point.

At a rally? He'd throw you out. Outside of a speech? He'd walk right past you. In a debate? Well, he'll just talk over you and get really prissy with "did you ask me a question? Did you ask me a question?" shit and doesn't really care if he answers your question or not.

This particular moderator was especially weak, but even worse one of the conditions Donald Trump fought very hard for was no fact checking during the debate. Normally, moderators will fact check and call a candidate out on inaccuracies. Donald Trump basically wouldn't appear unless they agreed to not fact check, which is why Clinton made a point early in the debate to point out that she had a website that would do real-time fact checking as the debate went on (and other third party sources did so too).

538 saying there's a Trump surge? Where's the proof?

Where are you all seeing this stuff? On their website it says Clinton won the debate and her polls should go up? Per 538 "a CNN poll of debate-watchers, which showed that 62 percent of voters thought Clinton won the debate compared to 27 percent for Trump — a 35-point margin. That’s the third-widest margin ever in a CNN or Gallup post-debate poll, which date back to 1984

Any time he talks about Cyber, it's hilarious.

SANGER: We're under regular cyberattack. Would you use cyberweapons before you used military force?

TRUMP: Cyber is absolutely a thing of the future and the present. Look, we're under cyberattack, forget about them. And we don't even know where it's coming from.

SANGER: Some days we do, and some days we don't.

TRUMP: Because we're obsolete. Right now, Russia and China in particular and other places.

SANGER: Would you support the United States' not only developing as we are but fielding cyberweapons as an alternative?

TRUMP: Yes. I am a fan of the future, and cyber is the future.

the part where he said "the nuclear are the biggest problem this world has" switching - within 5 seconds to - "but Russia has much more modern nuclear weapons, we need to keep up", essentially promoting another nuclear arms race, imho, was another gem.

It's disgusting to have politicians this ignorant of the internet. This is 2016, we should expect a relatively deep understanding of the internet at this point. It's such an enormously important tool for man kind.

This is like old person in 1998 levels of techno-ignorance. "The cyber."

Trump is a goddamn whiney small handed bastard of a candidate. I hope the next moderator calls him out on his bullshit time and again so he has a temper tantrum. It would make me smile.

I was really anxious going into the debate about how Hillary would do, and the debate eased my mind. She's so much better than Trump, and last night should have made that obvious to everyone.

I think he should have been a lot more aggressive. First of all, there's a lot legitimately there to be aggressive about, but also if he's not that he falls apart. Without it, in the resulting vacuum are his opinion on things, which are senseless, and the gigantic holes/weaknesses in his past and character. He has to make the story about how much she and the establishment suck and how visionary he is at recognizing exactly the why and how, otherwise it's a disaster because he is what he is.

He was trying to keep the focus on her (and the Washington establishment) at the start, and it was messy but it was at least kind of working.

His problem is that he cannot let anything go. He felt like he had to respond to every single attack Clinton made on him, which caused him to totally lose focus. She let a lot of his claims go so that she could make more coherent, targeted rebuttals, and it was absolutely the right approach.

I'd consider that an easy problem to fix in future debates, but Trump has shown a pathological ability to ignore perceived slights through this entire election cycle (most obviously after the DNC) and through his entire life, so future debates are probably going to look a lot like this.

If you think he needs to be more "aggressive" in that he needs to interrupt and shout over Hillary more, then I'd absolutely disagree. Every time he interrupted with some pithy aside while she was answering a question made him look childish. He's not going to be able to bully her off the podium that way.

Seriously, he had so many outrageous stances in this debate, but this one might take the cake. His stance on police-minority relations? 100% on the side of the police, bragged about the fraternal order of police endorsement, and his solution is to let cops randomly frisk black people without cause nation wide. Who cares if a state court ruled it unconstitutional? He'll appeal and win. After all, it can go all the way to the supreme court, and the president will get to pick who makes the deciding vote.

Fucking disgusting.

Yeah in some way, like I said, I'm almost glad that he kept that stance and didn't even bother to provide any depth or nuance. About 0.003% of the population are police - and about 30% are black or Latino.

That one is fucking weird, and I can't beleive it was said in a national debate. This one is strange too:
TRUMP: It does not show that. The record shows that I'm right. When I did an interview with Howard Stern, very lightly, first time anybody's asked me, I said, "who knows." Essentially. I then did an interview with Neil Cavuto. I had numerous conversations with Sean Hannity at Fox, and he called me the other day and I spoke to him about it. He said, "you were, totally," because he was for the war.

HOLT: Why—

TRUMP: And that is before the war started. Sean Hannity said very strongly, to me and other people, he's willing to say, but nobody wants to call him, I was against the war. He said, "You used to have fights with me," because Sean was in favor of the war. And I understand that side also. Not very much, because we should have never been there, but nobody called Sean Hannity. And then they did an article in a major magazine, shortly after the war started. I think in '04. But they did an article, which had me totally against the war in Iraq. And one of your compatriots said, you know, whether it was before or right after, Trump was, because if you read this article, there's no doubt. But if somebody, and I'll ask the press, if somebody would call up Sean Hannity, this was before the war started. He and I used to have arguments about the war. I said it's a terrible and a stupid thing. It's going to destabilize the Middle East. And that exactly what this's done.

It really is pretty amazing to see someone basically try and wing a presidential debate. Like, that was literally the plan here - wing the debate. And he crashed and burned in spectacular fashion.

Donald Trump was, yet again, the slow kid who thought he could bluster through the book report for the book he didn't read. He didn't even read the cliff-notes. He just glanced at the title and said, "Killing birds? How hard can it be?"

I understand that there are a lot of people in this country that are animated by resentment, or who feel, rightly, that the political class has left them behind. I understand that, however distateful it is to admit, there are reasons beyond base racism and sexism for people to support Donald Trump. But it absolutely boggles my mind that he could have widespread support despite making it clear time and time again that he has no understanding of the Presedency or its responsibilites.

He is running for a job when he does not understand what that job entails. He is making blanket assertions on policies when he obviously has no idea what those policies are. Far more damningly, he has no conception ofthe nation's core values. He seems to have no idea what the Constitution and Bill of Rights say or he is openly scornful of them. It is beyond me how anyone could watch his pathetic performance and still think that he has any business trying to get a job that he is so utterly unsuited for.

Also Clinton's line about assuring the world that America's word is good was probably the best line of the night. It really pointed out just how deranged a lot of Trump's rhetoric is for the rest of the world.

It really needs to be law to require major party candidates to attend all three debates to remain on the ballot.

We didn't need this law before, because until Trump no one was stupid enough to threaten not doing a debate.

I really really hope after the fence sitters heard that, they realize what they might be getting themselves into. And I honestly hope any black Trump supporters changed their mind after hearing that, because no black person could support this guy who would want the status quo of cop behavior of shootings, stop and frisks and the like to continue.

#TrumpWon is trending right now on Twitter. Seems like cronies like Cruz, Gingrich, and Palmer Luckey's white supremacists are trying to convince everyone Trump did well through meme magic.

Jimmy Carter actually skipped a debate in 1980 because he didn't want to debate the third-party candidate John Anderson (who was present along with Reagan). They had the debate without him instead.

I think he was right in that particular instance. No amount of debate prep is going to allow him to suddenly become knowledgeable and experienced in all the areas he is so sorely lacking.

He's incapable of winning a traditional debate so make sure it isn't a traditional debate. Instead make it just another platform to trumpet your message.

So frustrating to see and hear so many comments along the lines of:

"This election is a joke"
"Both candidates are awful"
"It'd be great if a meteor took them both out and we started over"
"It's just a shouting match!"
"Nobody won. Everyone lost"

The intellectual laziness found amongst people unwilling to actually assess the substance of a debate is astonishing.

lol at the Trump won hashtag. It's full of alt-righters posting internet polls as proof he won the debate. Considering how Trump gravitates to anything that confirms his biases, they are setting their own candidate up to ensure he doesn't do anything to change his behavior in the future debates leading him to make a fool of himself again. This is gold.

unfortunately, he went up against someone who is a very seasoned politician, and got demolished in the process. I honestly wonder if he'll do another debate... I hope so, because I would love for him to keep destroying himself.
