Because on the laptops it's the screen backlight that's lighting it up, so they just have to cut a logo-shaped hole in the casing. On the iPhone there's all the internals between the back of the phone and the screen.

The 3 and 3GS look the same.
The 4 and the 4S look the same.

There isn't much reason to think that the 5 and the 5S are going to look different.

From Apple's standpoint, they get to keep buying the same materials at cheaper prices. I think anyone looking for a redesign for the 5S would be disappointed.

Exactly. The "S" cycle has it's benefits (spec bumps) but the real innovation happens on the actual "number" cycles. Like the 4 and 5 got the major makeover. I like those better.

Yeah, I've seen some other pics, it's more likely just the angle. Not to mention those are actually iPhone 5s (plural) not the 5S, as teh LED flash is the 5 version.

So will the glass on the gold iphone be white or black?
 
I don't understand the logic in releasing a budget phone for $500.

This is like when they released the Mac Mini for $700 and called it a budget computer.

because it's not for everyone

like how bmws and mercs are not for everyone. there are alternatives like toyota and Honda (android and windows phone). you are free to chose
 
It's all about selling an iPhone to the off-contract market. With Cricket, MetroPCS and Virgin getting the iPhone now it makes sense to make a cheaper iPhone that people will actually buy.
 
can't compete with my Lumia 520 (200€ +30€ for 32go sd) if 500€ off contract.

if 400€ with 32go...hummm long time since I've considered purchasing an iPhone.
 
That doesn't look like an Apple press shot at all. Not that it matters too much, since we've already seen it from all angles.
 
Making a iPhone 5C instead of letting iPhone 5 be should increase the value of 5S and increase profit margins by selling 5C over 5 in the long run. An injection molded plastic case is substantially cheaper than a metal one.

And you can't achieve the metallic finishing look of the iPod touches if your base material is plastic without spending a lot of money.
 
Please don't let it be these colors. What are these, pastels? Can't red just be red? Let a green be its thing!

Looks kind of cheap to be honest.

Part of the allure of the iPhone is that it's a luxury item both in reputation and build materials.
 
So umm...how does this compare to the iPhone 5 specs exactly? Cause usually they just drop by the price by $100 anyways once a new model comes out.
 
Alright this is important for Apple, other than the incredibly notable exception of the iPod shuffle, it's when Apple has to respond to the bottom end of the markets that they created and occupy the premium end of that they have stumbled.

Are you implying that the iPhone is considered a failing product right now or something?
 
Good move by Apple. Compared to selling last year's iPhone at a lower price, this one will probably have higher margins and because of the colors people won't even perceive it as a lesser product, but appreciate the customization option..
