$500 is still a bunch of cash you know..

Want to see 5S leaks

...Budget model
...$500

500 is cheap for the rich, young, educated Apple buyer.

Lolz.

And $500 is not "cheap" by any means, so I'm not sure what the heck is going on here. I guess we'll see on the 10th.

I was actually looking forward to a price drop on the normal 5, so I'm hoping they don't replace it completely. But if the 5c is similar in price... well, I guess it makes sense from their perspective.

Sidenote: It's really a shame the apple store doesn't sell refurbished iphones. They've got almost everything else on there.

Haha, wow.

Finally a budget phone for the reasonable price of half a thousand dollars before taxes.

I don't understand the logic in releasing a budget phone for $500.

This is like when they released the Mac Mini for $700 and called it a budget computer.

Lol $500. Oh wow.

500$ is not 'budget' where I come from.

Off-contract for $500...yeah ok

$500 is budget?

iPhone budget model = 500 bucks.

what the hell. How on Earth do they intend to compete with other similarly specced phones that don't cost nearly as much?

$500... "budget model"... "affordable"...

$500?

Not enough LOLs in me

500$ is not a budget price.

This is really $500? holy shit Apple has no shame

Misstep after misstep Apple

First of all, if you thought Apple was going to create a $300 or less off-contract phone to compete with Android's low-end, you don't understand Apple. Apple has no interest in chasing the bottom end of the market. The purpose of this phone is so that they don't have to sell the fucking iPhone 4S as the free-on-contract phone this year, because selling the 4S for another year means supporting the 3.5" screen size, the 30-pin dock connector, and the A5 chip for another year. Second, I promise you will never, ever, ever see anyone at Apple use the word "budget" to describe this phone. Third, it's going to have the internal specs of an iPhone 5, which is comparable to the performance of a Galaxy S 3, which currently goes for $549 off contract, so I'm not understanding why $500 seems like such an absurd price. Fourth, I'd love to see the venn diagram of people who think this is going to bomb and people who thought the iPad was going to bomb.

They really should just skip to the 6 with a larger screen....they're going to fuck this up with just an incremental spec bump, lol.

Fuck what up, exactly? Sounds like you just want them to stop doing yearly bumps so you can have a new number on your iPhone.

$500 is too expensive to significantly increase market share for them. And that's $500 for the 16GB model without the possibility of expansion. Basically what they are doing is selling last year's model with a plastic body and a $50 discount.

At that price point you might as well spend an extra $150 and get the high-end model. Seems like a missed opportunity honestly.

Who buys a phone at off contract prices anyways?

I don't know what you guys were expecting for the price.

This shit is made for teenagers who want their phones to match their outfits and people who don't know any better.

It will be a new iPhone for $99 on contract. That's what they will advertise is as such.

iOS is terrible anyways.

Good! If it's cheap and colours aren't ugly IRL I'll get one if AU KDDI has them in September. They should come with strap loops so I don't have to buy a kyocera honeybee

So it's the prada bag of phones, but now it's labaled budget and still expensive

I don't think they understand why people buy iphones
it's like saying here's inferior ray ban goggles, we call it ray ban budget and it costs a lot too.

Incoming shitstorm but apps mostly.

Should be about $50 on contract.

So the same price as something like a Razr M with better specs.

What were people expecting again?

Apple never said "budget" .. it's supposed to be less expensive than their top end model, and it is.

The rumored 23% undercut is still not neglictible in any market. And it can still be better than that number.

For people who buy the iPhone for its better selection of apps, support, ecosystem, user experience, corporate and education tools, etc, it will be a more accessible option to get in. Most of that market will also appreciate a broader and more lively range of color options.

I understand what you're saying and all, but the Nexus 4 exists.

I understand what you're saying and all, but the Nexus 4 exists.

The Nexus 4 is a very unique case in the smartphone market. Google's selling them at cost and can afford to do so because they make their money on ads and services, and the Nexus is a gateway into Google's more profitable ventures. Apple, Samsung, HTC etc. rely on hardware profits to make money. Selling their phones at no profit margin would kill their revenue.

Moreover, the Nexus 4 is a relatively niche phone. The kind of people who are buying Nexus 4s are, by and large, not the kind of people who would buy an iPhone anyway. I don't think Apple's worried about it.

I'm thinking this phone is aimed more towards the emerging markets and other areas with less income to compete with android. It's about growth, and there is much more to be had in China and India than there is in North America. Remember, they want to make $$$, so as long as it's less expensive they can get a larger market share.

Why can't android phones scroll down web pages smoothly?

My quad-core, 2gb ram Optimus G says "bitch please".

Web pages flow smooth on this 4.7" 768x1280 screen... and looks sharp as fuck at 318ppi.

Did I mention this phone hit the market in 2012?

Lulz. Android now shits on both iPhone's hardware and software.

I wont post iPhone 5 comparisons cause ouch

On the one hand most people put covers on their phones so it doesn't matter. On the other Steve Jobs is rolling around in his grave.

Show me the app-support for android vs iOS. Yeah, aouuch..

Android: 1,000,000

Apple: 1,000,001

Lol. This is the last thing Apple fans can point to... and it's so weak.

Apple has given up market lead, hardware superiority, firmware superiority, innovation, etc.

Now that the Play Store has essentially caught up, what argument will be left?

That iPhones contain the essence of Steve Jobs?

Lmao!

App quality I guess. Tweetbot (´ε` )

And iMessage is still insanely useful because of it being built into the OS (emphasis on this before you mention WhatsApp, Line, etc.)

This makes my point.

Not too long ago iPhones lead, by a wide margin, every area on the smartphone front. Now they cling to what little they have left.

Google Now is the single best piece of software on a mobile device, imho.

I actually agree, I don't think there is much difference anymore, particularly at the OS level. I just like the quality of certain iOS apps I use better than their Android counterparts.

I've always wondered why Apple doesn't make the  light up on iPhones. It's such an iconic aesthetic detail on their laptops and I think it'd make for a really striking image in low-light/dark conditions.

I've always wondered this myself, my guess is they believe most people have their phone's in cases. this rendering such a feature useless.

but at least give us the option/

Laptops use the light from the screen to light up the Apple, an iPhone can't do that because all of the internals of the phone are in the way. So to do it they would need to put in a tiny LED and that uses battery and takes up space and is all around not worth it. They get the light on the laptops for "free" in engineering terms, on a phone it would have engineering costs.

Is there even a slight chance, that next to 5s and that 5c. Apple will release an "xl" model with a 4.5-5.0 screen?

And a true 5 incher, not that stretched BS.
