I had no idea you were supposed to tip barbers. Then again, I've never seen any tipping to barbers in my area which is why it never crossed my mind.
As for restaurants, I normally tip $2 regardless of the total cost. Why should I tip more for a more expensive meal when the waiter does the same effort for a cheaper plate? All they really do is bring the food/drinks.
Though I'll tip $5 if the waiter is super friendly, attentive or doesn't act desperate for tips.

All you guys are doing in promoting underpaid workers who have to rely on tips to get a decent living. Not to mention the discrimination that comes along with optional tips.

Like, tipping the barber/stylist is something your parent is supposed to teach you when you're a child and they give you a 5 to hand to the barber and say thank you.
They aren't employees, they don't earn a wage from the shop, they rent their chairs and make the bulk of their take home directly from tips.

While I agree, you're not changing anything by not tipping in America, all you're doing is fucking over the person that does rely on tips to get a decent living. It's the type of thing that needs to be legislated, not just "screw this person is particular".

If I give the the elderly immigrant who cuts my hair two bucks, I'm not just losing two bucks, I'm contributing to the downfall of society. Difficult as it is, I will endure. Not for me, but for the millions of children who might feel forced to tip their barbers in the future.

Tipping barbers is a longstanding practice, like tipping a waiter. It's not one of the bullshitty modern ones that businesses shoehorn in and guilt you into doing. And I would say it's doubly true that you need to tip the barber if you are paying with a credit card.

If the reason that waiters can be paid two dollars something an hour is because they can be expected to earn the remainder of their minimum wage in tips then surely the best thing would be to not tip in other sectors where it isn't the norm. If tipping a hairdresser becomes as normal as a waiter then employers could justify paying them two dollars an hour too. And it would be obligatory to tip them because they're working for two dollars an hour and if you don't you're a bad person.

Yeah, it's super shitty that the wage situation in America is shitty enough that employers can get away with underpaying their workers and offloading more of the burden on customers to make sure workers go home with a decent income.
But, I'm not about to take that out on workers by stiffing them, when the real focus should be pushing for better wage practices. Until that point, I'll happily tip.

In rural America, it's customary to tip cows for their service in milk production.

Wow. I originally thought this thread was about accidentally tapping the "no tip" button since I've been guilty of that before by accident but to purposefully just screw their barber over is messed up. I tip minimum of $5 when I get a fresh cut since it takes like 30 to 40 mins for them to do me right, so I don't want them wasting their time on me just because I have a lot of hair.

Typically anything that requires workers either giving you special attention or having to fulfill custom/specified orders.
It's why the few fast food joints that do have tipping (albeit much less in your face) are almost always going to be the ones that are more based around heavily customized orders.

Like, I guess I'm weird in that I'm really pretty shitty when it comes to tipping wait staff. Like, I get that they're under paid but that really shouldn't be put on me as a customer to provide charity.
Hair, though... I guess is a different story. I've always developed personal connections with the people who cut my hair. My hair dresser is more than just a barber, she's my confidant and friend. Someone I straight up trust with my whole appearance and the relationship kind of blurs past professionalism into something more personal and intimate. Tipping in this situation isn't about wage fairness, minimums, or a responsibility for someone else's decisions. To me it's straight up about respect and gratitude for a an individual providing labor of exceptional quality. Do I have to? No. I super don't and I don't really feel pressured to. Even if I'm dirt fucking broke, though I always leave her whatever I can because I appreciate her work and she's the ONLY person I trust with a pair of clippers anywhere near my scalp.
Besides, I figure if I tip enough she'll finally finish knitting me the fucking scarf she owes me. 😂

Man, when I was either broke enough to where tipping would have actually made a difference in my finances or I was being cheap enough because I was trying to save up for the next overhyped video game, I just simply made a point to avoid situations where I would have to pay extra instead of making myself look like a heartless jackass.
Just get carryout (or don't eat out at all), or buzz your head yourself, or mix your own drinks, or park your own damn car,
or give yourself your own happy ending

women's hair can cost mad $$, my shit is like $15 maybe...why not just make it an even $20? dude spends like 20 something minutes tightening it up & all, i mean anyone who's gotten fucked up before can tell you that's a low price to look right for like a month or two (depending on how often you need to go).
