Prey (2017) |OT| Trust no one. Not even your shelf

I'm 30 hours in now and this game is an absolute, complete joy to play for me.

Sure, it's not perfect in every aspect, but my god do the sum of its part come together in a glorious whole. I may be in the minority based on the reactions I've seen, but I think the encounters, enemy designs and combat are very fitting and extremely well done. I'm playing on Hard and I love that you actually have to properly think your attacks through. For my playstyle at least the encounters have become these elaborate set pieces I construct almost and it's pure video game joy when it all comes together and works out.

I mean ku-fucking-dos to the level designers on this especially. It just oozes intelligence, care and logic through and through.

I'm in love with this game and am patting myself on the back for waiting it out to patch 1.05, it was worth it despite my anger.

PS: As an Ambient music fan, the overall sound of Talos I is eargasmic despite the mixing/directional issues.

PSS: I immediately make all objectives inactive to avoid the god-awful waypointers, what a terrible idea for a game like this.

GAF, how scary is this game?

From the little footage I've seen it appears that anything can jump at you from anywhere, which doesn't seem like something I'd enjoy.

It really depends what type of 'scary' irks you. I personally don't think mimics really count as jump scares, it's nowhere near as frequent as some reviews and/or posts will have you believe. Especially a bit into it you will have tools for detection at your disposal. That being said, on Hard at least, it can be a pretty tense and sometimes even nerve-wracking game due to the fact that most enemies outside of basic mimics can really fuck your day up quick. If you mainly want in for the exploration etc., I'd still recommend it but maybe just play on an easier setting to take some of the edge off.

I'm a little bit more than 10 hours in and just repaired the elevator to go from the lobby to the Aboretum. If I do some sidequests: How much do I have roughly left from the main story?

Also: What are some good Typhon abilities to invest into? I thought about the one so I could save the guy in the Trauma Center.

You still have a lot to go. I'd say half way if you don't explore a lot.

As far as the guy in trauma, do you mean the crazy talking guy that's locked up? If so, just hit him with the stun gun.

I hit him with the stun gun early on and now when I go back, he's gone. Hopefully I didn't accidentally kill him or some shit. Let's see where this goes later on...

I just did the Arboretum elevator and I'm almost 30 hours in haha

That's what happens when you leave the area. If you check the computer terminal that lists the staff members, he'll be listed as "Safe".

Regarding the Nightmare enemy, is it true that the version of it that automatically hunts you only spawns when you install neuromods and when you enter a new area? In other words, if you don't get the "nightmare is hunting you" prompt as you enter an area, you are safe until you leave, until you carelessly install neuromods or until you anger a passive nightmare enemy (such as the one waiting in the lobby after going down the elevator, or the one in the beginning of the crew quarters)?

Anyone who can answer this?

Haven't been/or had time, to get into a game like this in a long time. This game is amazing. I'm enjoying it and glad I bought it.

Is there a new game+?

From my experience yes, on my no Typhon neuromod playthroughs, i only ever came across passive Nightmares who did nothing unless i aggrod them, never got the "hunting you" message.

I'm not using any Typhon neuromods and the bastard started attacking me while IN the elevator still after descending from the Arboretum into the Lobby immediately.

Jesus christ, HOW?

I did quite a few areas that are the opposite way in GUTS prior to the Arboretum. I didn't really follow the main story objective for quite some hours and instead just went to town exploring wherever the game let me go, I guess that explains some of it? I don't know, I take my sweet ass time with games like this and explore every single nook and cranny.

I actually knew that and just completely forgot and didn't put two and two together :/

That Psychoshock ability makes the game a lot easier. Also investing in the pre-order shotgun paid off. Only thing that scares me now is a nightmare because the one that I saw killed me with one hit.

Game is great.

Question for the Treasure Map sidequest:

Where is Sho's map? I found all the others but not hers. I was in her room and talked to her outside the gym.

You still have a lot to go. I'd say half way if you don't explore a lot.

Thanks for the tip with the Stun Gun. Cleared the Crew Quarters and nobody from the crew died. At least not that I saw.

Thought this was suppose to get easier once you reach the Aboretum...? jesus christ, quests all over the place...fixing that lift,I dont even come close to killing the stuff in there...and that Saving Raini quest...how am I suppose to do that...guess I wll bring this down to easy...all the turrets attack me now, those corrupted operators take forever to bring down...I should'nt of wasted some neuromods on the transformation skill...useless most of the time, theres a place I could enter if I change but there is 2 corrupted operators in a small room that will kill me in like 4 seconds...stopping for tonight, maybe I am just not in the mood for it now.

I don't know the details of your play style etc. but based on your issues, I'll throw out some tips:

1. Corrupted Operators = Stun gun; one shot on a somewhat upgraded one takes like half their health or more and they hit the ground electrified with more than enough downtime to load up another shot to kill them or to switch to the wrench and get two/three blows in max to destroy them.

2. Your foe seems to be the Telepath here as that's the
elevator's menace
and also what's holding up everyone in the
greenhouse
. Do not click this spoiler tag if you don't want the solution:

There is a hint spelled out flat-out in an email and/or note that tells you the greenhouse's roof is open. If the mind-controlled humans can't physically reach you,
they can't attack. The idea is for you to not charge into the greenhouse, instead proceed through the level leaving it alone and at the end in Alex's office all the way at the top you can get on top of the greenhouse roof per the roof structure

Also remember, any mind-controlled human can be knocked out with your stun gun which breaks the mind-control. You can aggro them, let them run towards you with a stun gun shot charged up and just hit them when they're approaching. The Telepath itself isn't a big issue as it's easily stunned.

3. Again, I can only make assumptions on your playstyle based on your issues but it sounds like you're not using all the tools at your disposal. The general encounter should be viewed more as a puzzle in this game, it's not a shooter. For example, most enemies can be stunned in several ways, be it GLOO or stun gun, the multitudes of grenades and then you go in for an attack and retreat before the stun wears off. Sometimes just running away and setting up a trap against them is appropriate and it tends to work like a charm. Hack a turret, set it up around a tight corner and aggro a tough foe to come your way and let the turret do some damage. While they're busy trying to smash the turret, stun them, pull out your shotty (or whatever) and finish the job...things like that, just an example of what I like to do.

I'm not using Typhon powers on my first playthrough at all, so that helps with the turrets I guess but there is ways around that like most things in the game.

Have you checked what operators and turrets are weak to?

The disruptor+shotgun combo is foolproof, except with the
voltaic phantom
(use the gloo gun in that case).
Stun the enemy, get close, wreck their shit and repeat until it's dead, buy the neuromod to harvest more materials from recyclers so you never run out of ammo.
Max out those 2 weapons by buying the neuromods that upgrade security weapons beyond the normal limit and that's it.
Nightmare mode was a walk in the park, could be easier if you use some typhon neuromods but my build only had human skills.

Yep I am scanning when I can...Thanks for the tip guys...I could of sworn I used the stun gun on Raini, when she was out of the room and it killed her(objective failed)...mmm,maybe it wasnt the stun gun after all lol,i'll check later...made some progress but still pretty hard...

I didnt even notice because I didnt have to that much so far but does the game pause when you are in the Items wheel...?

So I've seen a comment here stating that this game "changes" after a few hours and I'm wondering, how much does it change? I'm really enjoying the Bioshock-y feel of the trial (slower, exploration based stuff) but if it drastically changes a la Call of Cthulu, I'm going to hold off on a purchase.

edit: Thanks

edit 2: thanks you

Yeah, it does. You can basically chain together all kinds of things you can think of. I also like to trap enemies into ambushes where I pull together a few heavy leverage items, stun them when they come around the corner, go into Combat Focus and start hurling heavy items at them which does a ton of damage. That's the real fun of the combat for me so far, seeing how creative and ridiculous I can get and surprisingly, most things you can think of actually work that way.

I don't know if they're referring to some specific plot point later on or whatever, but I'm high 20s/30 hours in right now and the quality and overall style never drops or changes.

There is a bit of a change - you're forced to deal with a lot more things and it may impact the speed at which you traverse the station.

Just finished it. Loved it. I dumped about 34 hours into my run. I believe I thoroughly explored and saw most of the content before I mainlined the main objectives. Arkhane does such a fine job creating worlds between this and the original Dishonored.

I really think I'm going to pick up Dishonored 2 when it's on sale for cheap later in the holiday season -- Destiny 2 drops too soon and will take up my time until then anyways. I think I've heard there is input lag with the PS4 version of that game, is that true?

Anyways, I hope they get a chance at a sequel or at least a stand alone like Dishonored 2, I'd be all over it day one.

Wtf is up with the menus? I tried the demo and half of the time I can't use my mouse and have to navigate with the keyboard. I thought about buying it with the recent discount but things like this make me think that I shouldn't pay more then like 10€ on it.

Currently 35€ on Xbox Market. Is it worth it? I have been thinking of buying this game since release but haven't been 100% sure. How is Mick's music in this?

OST is good, a little disappointing. (The sound design is not very good, the stings play at really weird times - too much like dishonored's sound design, when it should be more like a horror game)

but the game is GOAT. soooo good

I got this on Newegg when Wario64 tweeted out the $25 price a few weeks ago.

I've done a complete 180 after getting past the opening. I'm 10 hours in now.

I'm sure this has been talked about to death, but the game can be extremely frustrating in the begining if you're not playing it as a survival simulation. I think the marketing really hurt my expectations. I thought it was going to be another Bioshock.

That said, the game is incredible. Exploring the world is so much fun. The combat is decent and I am having more fun with it now that I have some good perks and take just a little more time before jumping into fights.

One thing I think that would have been a huge improvement is a comprehensive tutorial that forces the player to recycle, craft, fight, etc before you actually start playing. The text heavy tutorials feel hidden and take you out of the game.

I fucked up...

I somehow must've recycled
faux-William Mitchell's tracker bracelet!?
I'll try to find him without it and get my revenge but it seems like he could be anywhere...jesus.

If you have access to his bracelet then it wouldn't help you find him anyway, right? Did you get the quest about getting his location from
volunteer quarters
?

I can give you a hint if you don't want to know his exact location.

You'll find him with enough exploration. Not in any obscure location or anything like that.

As Sande points out, if you already had his tracking bracelet, then it obviously wasn't going to help you find him anyways so I wouldn't sweat it.

Hmmm wait, I may be misunderstanding what these do as I've never "used" one. I assumed if you have the tracking bracelet you could open the item for some info or whatever?

I'm here:

I repaired the stove, was locked into the freezer and then "escaped"
and received the information that he was an impostor (which was clear already but I wanted to see how it plays out prior to killing his ass) and the subsequent sub-mission quest. I remember the audio log, or whatever it was, saying something about him being traced back to Psychotronics?

And yeah, I'll find him eventually. I love to explore every nook and cranny in games like this anyway and have been doing just that.

By the way, what are you guys' strategies against the Voltaic Phantom? The scans indicate it has a weakness to EMP and Nullwave grenades, however, that didn't seem to work last time I tried and I got my ass handed to me. Do the grenades have a certain radius of effect possibly and I've just been tossing them too far away from the actual enemy at hand? These things are massive bastards.

Everyone wears a tracking bracelet on Talos I. Use the security stations to find out where the tracking bracelet is located (they have an inventory of every single person on the ship). It shows up as a waypoint on your screen, like a quest waypoint would.

If the character has taken off the tracking bracelet, then the security station will only lead you to the tracking bracelet - so it's useless for finding the person anyways.

The computers at security stations show where the bracelets are. So any bracelet that isn't on the corresponding crew member won't help you find them. So bracelets you find are pretty much useless.

There's a side quest that specifically helps you find him, but I'm not sure what triggers it. Maybe just progressing the main quest enough.

Right right...sorry I had a bit of a brain fart there. I've been kind of avoiding those terminals because I like to set myself weird rules like that for my first playthroughs. It's my first rodeo and I'm going no Typhon powers, no waypointers (inactive missions) and so on. I figure if I'm exploring correctly, I'll find all these people eventually.

And what that, I'm invalidating my original post regarding William Mitchell anyway :/

Man y'all weren't lying about the audio mix. While I love Mick Gordon's work, this is the second game I've played with terrible mixing from him (Doom).

Also found a possible Easter egg reference that could serve as a gigantic spoiler. MAJOR SPOILERS for the show
Ascension
and the plot of Prey.
The Ascension Shipping crates could be a reference to the tv show Ascension which dealt with the crew of the space vessel the Ascension investigating a mysterious murder aboard it's halls. It's currently on year 51 of its 100 year journey to Proxima Centauri in a secret mission launched by the Kennedy administration in the 1960's during the cold war.

Over the course of the episodes we find out that the ship actually never left earth, its modern day and the whole thing is actually a test to see if we could even survive such a scenario in the first place. Except, THAT isn't what is happening either!

Turns out all of this is to cover up a top secret experiment to force the next stage of human evolution! This all manifests in a young girl born on the ship who develops telepathic abilities. The show ends on a huge cliffhanger.

Prey shares much with Ascension, including the 60's-meets-future-tech look, JFK having a hand in the future and plot twists to throw player off of what is really happening. The first big twist thrown at the player is that you've been in a simulation reliving the same day over and over again. After making it through the game you find out that all of THAT was a simulation too!

Not only that, but you also find out that the person you thought you were, you absolutely weren't! You were actually one of the alien invaders you had been so mercilessly killing throughout! Humanity has fallen to the Typhon and what seems like the last resistance had caught one and tried to basically reprogram it to be sympathetic to the humans.
After seeing the ending, playing the game again afterward totally changes the behavior of the Typhon and humans in a cool way to me. Seeing that possible link just blew my mind. Really enjoyed this game!

Played this over the last few days. About 32 hours total and it was amazing! Really good game and loved every minute of it. Will be thinking about this for a while and hope others give it a chance. Prey should be played by anyone interested in sci-fi and exploration.

Well... I think the connection to
Ascension, the tv show
is a bit of a stretch other than the whole
it's not what you think it is, layered kind of reality
. Nice thought tangent though.

The sort of mind-fuck at the beginning of the game, breaking the glass and ending the loop (which, I think would have been much stronger if they forced you to do the loop two or three times) is dramatic, wonderful, and... that's about it. The game hits that high note and then doesn't match it, no matter how Deus-Ex-y and System-Shock-y it gets. There simply isn't another "whoa" moment, not even when the Typhon mega-monster engulfs the entire station.

However...

If you consider this thought: Alex escaped from Talos, with the planet earth overrun with the Typhon, despite whatever actions you took during the playthrough. Sure it was a simulation, but you have to wonder... did Alex change anything about the memories/scenario being played to you, the player, the Typhon experiment? Just as he was lying to you, throughout the game, is it possible that the "version" of the truth being simulated wasn't exactly how the events unfolded, or, that Alex (nor Morgan, really) were the "good guys?" The idea was to somehow give the Typhon a sense of "humanity" and would a simulation of the actual events on Talos reinforce this or hurt this experiment?

If this is the case, and if it's a lie, maybe the image shown on the screens at the end is also yet another layered lie? Could this be yet another Looking Glass, and maybe the operators are the real intelligent entities, mercilessly playing their version of humanity over and over, trying to find... something of use between humans and Typhon.

Just a thought.

Finished the game yesterday after 32 hours. Really enjoyed it overall. Loved the atmosphere, exploration and music. Story was OK, interesting enough to make me want to go on. There are a LOT of systems in this game, it's really complex and I liked that. Abilities system, suit shipset upgrades all were cool.

That said, I didn't enjoy combat. Combat per se, in terms of feeling is OK, there is some weapon variety and cool powers, but fighting the typhoon wasn't fun. Whenever I saw one, I just felt stressed and annoyed. They move around too much, they're bulltet sponges. And man, they're loud as shit. Also, the game went on and on and it dragged a bit. Traversal through the station could've been better with some fast travel system.

Anyways, like I said, great experience overall and would easily recommend it. Arkane really makes intricate and detailed games. It's a shame Dishonored 2 and this game didn't perform well (from what I've heard). They are a really good developer and have established their own style. Hopefully people will try the game with the recently released trial and purchase it.

I know they aren't going to fix the audio mix, but it really takes away from the experience and can be annoying once you start to encounter more enemies. That being said, I'm really enjoying this and will pick up Dishonored 2 once it's $20 again.

That's fucking amazing. I wish I had the time to do another playthrough of Prey. The game gets top marks from me and could only be overshadowed by Wolfenstein II later this year.

Hello !

I don't remember, does the ps4 pro version work well now ? I remember having read some report from DF saying that it's now perfectly fine but maybe it was a dream...

Edit:

All right i found it:

UPDATE 4/8/17 10:30am: It's taken three months to comprehensively sort the issues, but we can finally recommend the PlayStation 4 version of Bethesda's excellent Prey with no reservations. The title launched with no PS4 Pro support and poor controller response (measured by latency specialist Nigel Woodall at a disappointing 217ms). Subsequent patches attempted to resolve the input lag issues, but introduced intrusive stutter and screen-tearing issues in the process. June's patch added PlayStation 4 Pro support, but the poor consistency in performance remained.

The good news is that the latest patch 1.05 update released yesterday finally resolves the issues. Properly frame-paced 30fps action is back on the table, with the stuttering and tearing issues gone, bringing the PS4 version of Prey into line with the Xbox One version - which never exhibited any of these issues. We did a quick high-speed camera capture of the game in motion to check on controller latency, and while the measurement is not quite as precise as we would like, input lag is now in the region of 133ms - slightly high for a 30fps game but clearly a huge improvement overall compared to the launch code.

While Prey is a game that is still best played on PC, it's great to see that PlayStation 4 owners now get the complete console package, with Pro owners retaining the visual enhancements detailed below. It's an excellent game and it's great to see that its lingering issues on PlayStation have been resolved.

Loving this game... Might be my GOTY so far. I'm playing on hard and exploring every nook and cranny. I'm about 15 hours in. I feared the game might not have it's identity being compared to Bio/System Shock, Dishonored, and Deus Ex, but it definitely feels like it's own thing. Arcane is fast becoming one of my favorite developers.
