Reading about how other people eat like this is always amazing. im much too simple to do fancy omelets or dishes with more than three ingredients. To me food goes in one end and out the other so its not something i really care about. A meal for me will be 6 strips of turkey bacon microwaved on a dish or a steamer bag of brocolli with salt/pepper. The last time i was doing this to lose weight i ate nothing but salad w/ blue cheese dressing and bacon (turkey bacon and regular pork bacon). Took me a month to get tired of it and switched it up.

I eat this way more or less, and have lost 100 pounds, these days I mostly eat to gain muscle so i eat about 3000 calories on the days I lift. I am packing on muscle these days without any real body fat.

I have been doing it for years.

It is a gamechanger if you do it right, and the mental effect and energy are awesome.

Fuuuck

I need to develop the meal plan to do it from a 190 pound weight and do a caloric deficit that leads to a 3 pound loss per week.

I feel like shit every single day. Not exaggerating. Headache and fatigue.

Mayhaps I need to change my diet.

For me i find that a period like this only lasts at most a couple days. When its gone on longer than that there were hidden carbs i was ingesting that was keeping me from kicking the addiction. Ketosis urine analysis strips can help in cases like this.

Here, left if when I was big, right is a couple of months ago I am thinner now. Since adding power yoga to my lifting I have a shit ton more definition these days. I am 5'6 and 37 BTW.
I mostly go by this protocol http://ketogains.com/
All the BulletProof stuff can be nonsense*, just cut out sugars and save grains for special occasions.
I also gotta say that I have never been able to afford to do the grass fed beef/ all organic veggie thing I have no idea how some folks do that as it is pricey enough to cook all the time. I buy organic eggs and oils..that's about it.
cMppPf6.png

Uhh.. how do I shrink images?

oh and If you don't want to lift weights, it is far easier to loose weight doing nothing than trying to do what I do.
*I do use the coffee, mostly as it an easy way to get in calories while not adding protein.

Sorry, I missread editing.
So for me, the 'burn' that this causes in my head seems cleaner if that makes sense.. I don't have a better way of explaining it. I do have to take melioration to get to sleep most days otherwise I stay up tl 2AM-3AM.
Personally when it 'clicked' with me it also more or less zapped my moodswings but I have not come across much research that says it does that for others.

I've seen the best results when on a keto diet, but could never stay on it for long -mainly because each dish here is served with either bread or rice and I usually don't prepare my own food.

Reading these posts though, I'm getting motivated to get back on it again. I felt most energized when carbs were cut from my daily diet.

Dude go for it. It helped me out a lot. No mental fog or fatigue or drowsiness after a big meal.

Be warned though the first week is hell cause you're going through sugar withdrawals. Headaches will suck and you'll feel like shit but after that you just feel so good, really worth it to end that dependency on sugar.

Im in the same camp.

Breakfast: 2~3 table spoons mct oil
lunch: raw spinach, olive oil, avocado
dinner: chicken with brocolli or groundbeef chili dump some cheese on it
late desert: yoghurt, olive oil and some berries

Amounts to 2000~2300 kcal, with 80~100 gram of protein and 10~20 grams of carbs

Whenever I go into keto my lifting stamina and strength decreases like 75% so I can't ever spend too much time in it, despite not minding the dietary restrictions too much :(

I know there are ways to cycle carbs and whatnot for lifting but at that point the diet becomes a bit too complex and difficult to manage for my life style.

I do like a lot of the recipes I ate while keto though, still eat some of them despite not being keto.

I've been interested in trying this. How good is Keto as a diet for smaller weight loss? Say I want to lose 10-20 lbs but probably not more since I'm not sure if it'd be healthy.

It depends on what your starting weight is. If you're trying to go from 300 to 290 it's a different ballgame from trying to go from 190 to 180.

In general, yes it is.

I'm 6'0" and weigh 191. All my weight is in the middle and I only can measure body fat with measuring tape but it says my lean body weight would be about 145-150 and might be higher due to inaccuracy so if I got down to 170-180 and kept most or all of my muscle I'd be at ~15% body fat which seems ideal to me.

Would this be a good way to get there, and not just temporarily? I hear that with this weight comes off fast.

I've been on Keto for 2 years now. I wasn't overweight to begin with, but thought I needed a food lifestyle change from pop tarts and hot pockets. I've told my friends about it, one of them lost 50 pounds conservatively (Could have been 100 if they were much more dedicated). What got me were the success stories I've seen, they are just unfathomable.

Seriously, take a look at some of the before/after pics that many users on reddit post: https://www.reddit.com/r/keto

For making food, there's awesome recipes at http://ruled.me. I've also been trying out keto chow, it's pretty good when you don't have time to make breakfast.

I make bone broth to replenish my electrolytes and upped my salt intake to around 4~5
grams a day. The first couple of weeks my strength did decrease to like 90%,
but that is mostly my body adapting.

I've been doing keto for about four months now. Not super strict when I go on a date or something or when there's a birthday, but during the week I'm pretty strict about it.

Lost about 10-15 pounds. I wasn't fat before, I was just doing it to get rid of some extra weight.

Things is, I'm about 6'5 and I weigh about 180 lbs. That sounds pretty skinny but actually I still have a lot of pudge around my gut. I know spot training doesn't work, but I don't want to get too skinny. Any advice on this?

Right now I'm on the Whole30 plan (I think the best way to describe it is a stricter Paleo diet), it's pretty interesting. I'm certainly starting to feel a lot better but the sheer restrictive nature of it makes it a pain in the ass sometimes. I had to spend way too much time yesterday finding a can of coconut milk that was compliant to the plan, for example.

I like how eating just meat, veggies, and fruit makes me feel, though. When the 30 days are done I'll probably stick to a Paleo-ish diet. It'll be nice to not fret over every single ingredient in every dish, though lol

You need to LIFT and build muscle. The "pudge" is in all likelihood a lack of muscle. It's why there's the term "skinnyfat"

You can keep this diet as simple or as fancy as you want it. Variety is the key to keeping what you eat interesting so you don't get bored or grow cravings.

As to those here who workout. It's very important that you do not cut salt from your diet. Salt is essential to replenish sweat loss.

Okay, guess it's gym time for me tonight then :p Thanks
Since you don't have a good bit of fat to lose, take a look at how much you are eating. I stalled on my lifts for a while til I started eating more. Although it is a bit hard to eat so much as the whole fat thing makes you kinda full.

I just started keto a month or so ago after I bought a sous vide machine -- or, at the very least, low carb with hopefully some keto days built in. I've had some cheat days, which I suppose knock me out of ketosis (for instance, my girlfriend's parents visited yesterday, and they took us out to a sushi dinner and were shoving kosher macarons at me).

I don't feel that things are restrictive. I have a few go-tos, like a Chipotle salad bowl (no rice, no beans, just chicken, cheese, and salsa), which is located right outside my gym for post-lift protein.

I've recently discovered that keto smoothies take care of any residual sweet tooth craving, and Isopure low carb dutch chocolate protein powder's amazing. There's also a 0g carb creamy vanilla version.

My girlfriend's already noticed a difference, and this is the easiest thing in the world; it also causes me to save money and I've learned how to cook more. Basically, even attempting keto/low-carb has been a positive benefit.

I'm going out for breakfast with a friend now -- it's easy to order black coffee, eggs, and bacon and skip the bread.

I'm currently going into ketosis. Was on it from beggining of the year and lost 30 pounds in almost three months. I decided to let my body rest for couple weeks and now I've starting again. Bought keto sticks already :D Usually it takes me about 4 days to go into that state.

And yeah, it's amazing. Lots of energy, zero cravings either. When I'm on it I can do 36 hours fast ended with heavy weight lifting session and still not feel any loss of strenght. I actually do this kinds of fast every forth day. And the best thing..it spares the muscles. in regular low-calorie diet my strenght always went down when dropping weight. On keto it's actually growing. Slowly, but growing.

I've been on a keto diet for the past 5 or 6 weeks. I forget exactly.

Since I started I lost a total 36 lbs.

Started this 2 about 9 weeks ago. I weighed 196 and now down to 179, the lightest I've been in 15 yrs. My strength, muscle, and endurance are still there too.

This morning I had a bowl of oatmeal (complex carbs are ok) with berries and almond butter, delicious.

Sugary fruits? Why do I get the feeling you're going to say bananas.

Now I've noticed you do oatmeal. I thought that was part of the whole gluten thing dieters needed to avoid? As for butter, none of my stores would sell grass fed cow butter unless they marked up the price by 300% (Safeway) almond butter the next best thing?

I was strict Keto for about 5 months straight a year ago having no more than 20g of carbs a day. I lost 0lbs. But you know what? I lost a good amount of fat, while maintaining my weight from building muscle. I have before/after pictures where I clearly have a much better physique but I weight the same. Now I am moderately keto/low carb 80% of the time. The other 20% is reserved for things i enjoy on occasion like beer or popcorn at the movie theater. Here is what I have learned and my observations...

- After being strictly keto for those 5 months, I feel as it in a way reset my metabolism and fat burning capability. Even though I am now not nearly as strict, I can slip in and out of ketosis without much effort and without the initial "keto flu" people get when first starting out.

- I find it much easier to keep off weight even with the occasional cheat meal/snack.

- Eat your green leafy vegetables and lots of them! There was a period where I slacked on this I got some digestive issues as I was simply consuming meats/fat. You get a lot of great nutrients/digestive enzymes/fiber from the vegetables.

- I am against fast keto foods like pork rinds. These thing might help you meet macros or keep you full, but I really believe they offer no nutritional value.

- You can still have and enjoy things like certain fruits/vegetables that are higher in carbs and remain in ketostis. You just gotta be smart about it.

- Keto makes intermittent fasting a cake walk. And intermittent fasting has studies showing its good for you and helps a lot with weight loss.

- I have much more energy, much more sustained energy (no crashing/bonking in the middle of the day) and a much clearer mind.

- I found meal planning to be much easier. Also cooking to be more straight forward. Fat + Meat + Veggie. Pretty simple.

I'm glad to see this thread here. I've been in other food/nutrition threads on here and there seems to be a large majority that thinks keto is hocus pocus and the only way to lose weight is calories in/calories out and going to the gym. Keto is the only diet that is literally changing the bio mechanical process in what you use for energy (ketones), and significantly lowering the fat storage system (insulin).

Low Carb, High Fat is legit.

Some products that I enjoy that are also low carb:

Halo Top - Delicious Creamy Ice Cream; Multiple Flavors. 8 Net Carbs for half a pint.

Elli Quark - Even though it's technically creamy cheese; it has the consistency of excellent yogurt. Has great flavors and is 6 Net Carbs for a container thanks to Erythritol; Only downside is that there's no fat here.

Siggi Yogurt - For more traditional yogurt that is full of good fat, this is relatively low carb depending on the flavor. Delicious.

Hardbite Parsnip Chips - My official Chip Replacement. These are 3 Net carbs for 20 chips (40g). They have a fantastic crunch and is good for when I'm not feeling pork rinds.

Big Train Pancake (and Waffle) Mix - These make really good pancakes. I use heavy cream in the mix instead of water, and they turn out delectable. 7 Net Carbs for 3 prepared pancakes; pair off with Whipped Cream, a Sugar Free Jam, or some sugar free syrup like Cary's and you're golden.

Joseph's Pita Bread - THESE. THINGS. ARE. LIFE. SAVING. Grilled Cheese, Sandwiches, Mini Pizzas. They are soft and delicious. Good eaten alone, toasted, baked, whatever. 4 Net Carbs Per Pita

Keto has been all about discovering what alternative products there are to still enjoy what I want to. It's been fun, and now that I have a lot of what I need, I have a easy time doing low carb.

My coworkers and I decided to start keto two weeks ago because we've all been getting noticeably big. It's easy for us to stick to it because we're all doing it, I'm looking forward to see how much of a difference in body fat I'm going to lose.

Right now I'm 168lbs at 5'6", with about ~25-30% bodyfat. I'm the only one thats introducing intermittent fasting into the equation though, about how long before you start noticing visible differences?

I've wanted to try this for a while but I'm worried that I won't have any energy for 3 weeks or so before I get my system used to using fat rather than sugar for energy.

I go to the gym regularly and train Muay Thai and BJJ and I don't want to have to put that all on hold.
Maybe next time I get injured I'll try it.

I've been doing some sort of Primal-ish diet, except I've probably been eating more fruit than I should (gotta have my fruit, I refuse to cut it).

I felt that "low carb sickness" the first two weeks, but I'm not sure I ever hit ketosis because of the fruit. Change happened pretty quick - particularly in the belly region - but I've been cheating more often with ice cream and carbs the last two weeks or so.

As far as diets go, this is pretty manageable with a bit of discipline.

I've been trŷing this the last 4 days, so far so good, not missing bread, potatoes etc at all so far.

I did slimming world before so polar opposite, but drinking so much I am yet to feel rough.

I usually have a couple of coffees with cream, sucralose, butter and salt first thing, the rest of the day I drink at least 3l of water.

I'm struggling at times to get enough fat in but have relearned my love for cooking in butter and using full fat Mayo, putting my stuff in the calculators it gave me

1957 Kcal
167g fat
93g protein
20g carbs

I can see me coming unstuck at work, I need to fit most of that into a 12hr night shift.

Lost 150 lbs. over 18 months on keto. Have kept it off for 4 years now while being a bit less strict. I tend to eat at keto levels during the week and have a bit more carbs on the weekend. If I get out of hand and creep over 200 lbs I go strict again and can usually drop 10 lbs in a month. It's the perfect diet for me and I feel better at 40+ than I ever have before.

I train bjj regularly, it is grueling and I see your reservations with this diet. However, to get to keto state it only took me 1 week. Don't cut the calories just be sure you're having enough fats for energy.

Paleo says no gluten, this Primal/Keto isn't as restrictive. Oatmeal, quinoa, sweet potato, and brown rice are slow release complex carbs that are OK.

Oatmeal is apparently OK because it's been broken down and easier to digest. Apparently, if you eat something with gluten and feel OK then don't worry about it. I dont have it every morning, maybe once a week.

I at one point, I lost about 40 lbs. doing a primal/paleo inspired regimen, but since my kid was born a year and a half ago, I've fallen off the wagon and only "dabble" with it, which is bad news, considering how good I felt when I was pretty dedicated to it.

Recently I'm back up about 6 or 8 lbs, so it's time to get cracking. Just bought the "Whole30" so we'll see how it works out. I refuse to use age or time as my excuse for letting myself go.

I really need to get on this.

I've been doing mostly low carb....but yesterday I was feeling lazy and decided not to bring my lunch to work. I made a bad choice and got a cheeseburger with fries. Those carbs alone made me crave carbs the rest of the day, and honestly broke down any resistance I had the rest of the day to shoving more carbs into my face.

Even at the gym this morning, for the first time, I had doubts about even working out. I was mental. Luckily I finished my workout and made my lunch for the day. But man...it's amazing how fast one bad meal can just flip a switch.
