Those are fairly keto friendly, but there is room for improvement. Tilapia may be a bad choice for a meat on its own because it is fairly low fat. A couple cherry tomatoes should be okay, just check the macros. Do you like pork outside of bacon?

I love broccoli, spinach, green beans, and mushrooms, so those are meal staples for me. Spinach is great as part of a stuffing - try chopping it fine and mixing it with grated parmesan or cream cheese. Squash may be good, though you have to check the carbs on some varieties. Eggplant is good. I eat scrambled eggs as a side sometimes as well.

If you want variety, check reddit's ketorecipes for tons of low carb recipes. That's where I picked up using crushed pork rinds as a breading and the wonderful world of nut flour/cheese pseudobreads.

IDK how you buy meat, but I always get "reduced for quick sale" meats and vacuum seal them. My fridge is full of them. It's a good money saver.

You just blew my effin mind with the pork rinds breading. Holy nuts.

I've tried dieting a few times, and I've bought workout stuff (shoes, DVDs equipment), and I never stuck with it. So my wife is so against me buying anything for the purpose of this diet. No sousvide, no vacuum sealer. :(

And yes, I love pork.

Pork rinds are amazing. They have a very nice saturated fat profile (mostly oleic acid) and are one of the rare keto foods with a dry crunch like chips.

Snacks, nachos, breading for almost anything. . .they are great. For breading, I always do a mix of pork rinds and Kraft parmesan for the best coverage. It is actually really good for fried eggplant/eggplant parmesan.

Going to have to try this someday. I've never done faux breading with keto-friendly materials before, but this sounds tasty.

This isn't true. Some ant colonies will capture aphids and drink their milk:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tE7UL2pAaL0

Just like humans and cows, the ants farm the aphid milk for themselves, and in turn, the ants protect the aphids from other insect predators.

You might think humans shouldn't drink cow's milk, but it's just wrong to say we're the only ones that do it.

Ok, more specific. Ants are insects and we are part of the mammal group.

Well, technically we're omnivores...that's why we're given both flat and sharp teeth. If we're going to go on to talk about biological and evolutionary reasoning for human design, then why does the smell of cooked beef, pork, or poultry appeal to humans? Nature has given us a guide to discern nutritious food sources using our sense of smell. It's why feces or rotting food doesn't smell good, and a sign for us not to eat it.

Not quite the same. Our teeth more closely resemble a herbivore.

Get out of here with this. What do you have to say about gorillas, then? Either way, teeth has much less bearing on what that species can (or should) be eating compared to the digestive system. We *excel* at digesting meat and ate quite good at eating plant food, too!

What kind of herbivore? Humans cannot even eat the same food as cows and horses. These animals have evolved to eat grass all day and digest it completely. We get little nutrition from it other than bloody shits.

The teeth argument is a really silly one. There's lots of different configurations for teeth that work, and a lot of species don't even have teeth but still eat food. Aside from that, humans are a weird outlier species that cooks its food and uses tools extensively in a way that no other species does. A big cat kills its prey, drags it around, and then rips chunks off of it, all using its mouth. A human uses tools to do all of that. They're different evolutionary solutions to the same problem, but basically a human does not need tiger teeth to eat meat. We evolved from omnivorous species and can digest an omnivorous diet. There isn't really a one true diet for humans as long as it's not deficient in anything essential.

I believe certain cats drink the milk of elephant seals when they see them feeding.

Ok so i've made it, almost, through one shift here's what i've had since yesterday lunchtime (18Hrs ago)

Coffee
10g Butter
15ml Double cream
Salt
1/2tsp sucralose sweetner

Courgetti
Mushrooms
1/2 Mattersons sausage
mature cheddar
Double cream
Butter

Was nice, just cheesy and creamy enough, only downside is i had to nuke it to heat it up, which made the sauce a bit watery, was like drinking thin cheese sauce.

30g Brie sliced into 4 chunks, wrapped in salami
25g pepperami

100g Lettuce
30g Heinz Mayo
86g Chicken Breast

100g Bag Dry roasted peanuts.

All in all puts me within 5g of everything, the peanuts were perfect for making up the fat / protein deficit from the other food.

Water is not wet!
Not an anti-vaxxer. lol

My big issue with dairy (milk) is meant for babies. Milk is designed to raise a creature through infancy. Humans stop drinking milk from their mothers early in life as they can eat harder food with their teeth growing in.

Mankind has neglected this and now suckles the milk from a cow, which has been design to grow calves quickly from 60lbs at birth to 500-600 lbs in weeks. No other creature on the planet continues to drink it's mothers milk after being weaned -- let alone milk from another species!

The only reason other animals dont do that is because they cant. Its the same reason they dont eat baked potatoes or steak kebabs or buckwheat pancakes or Bacon McDoubles. The animals dont choose to abstain from eating these things because they believe them to be harmful to their physiology.

That explains the cow that was dazed and confused moo'ing into the speaker at the drive through, it so wanted a Big Mac, but the server couldn't understand.

Still at least the cow is saving themself from certain death /s

Alfredo chicken

Bacon
Chicken thighs
Broccoli
Alfredo sauce (jar or homemade)
Parmesan cheese

Chop up some bacon strips and render it
Remove bacon and leave grease
Fry up chicken thighs in bite sized pieces
Parboil broccoli and drain
Add alfredo sauce (Less carbs if homemade, I'm too lazy)
Bring to simmer and add bacon and broccoli
Finish with parmesan
Salt and pepper to taste

You can add Italian seasoning, crushed pepper, garlic, whatever you have on hand. I'm just lazy.

I've done this. Mushrooms are pretty good in it as well.

Subscribing this.

I lost 10kg on a low carb diet, but my weight is slowly creeping up.

In 2 months I'll post here again to see what changed.

Depends what you mean by occasionally. I fully cheat on holidays (I have a birthday coming up, and I always eat at Carrabba's and get a small birthday cake) and I "prepare" for certain special events. Over the summer I went to a corporate event for my job at one of those super expensive steakhouses. I ate a potato then but I prepared for it. It probably was 40g of carbs, so I just ate barely any others earlier in the day.

I also covered the thing in sour cream, butter, and bacon, so that probably slowed down digestion of it somewhat. And TBH I didn't really care that much. It tasted alrighy, but I didn't start craving it or have the reaction I used to have to potatos.

Really, when I say I "cheat" I mean I just eat whatever I want. It really isn't to satisfy some long craving between cheat days. It's mostly tradition, like Carrabba's or making my old recipes for mashed potatos and mac&cheese at Thanksgiving and Christmas so I eat with everyone else without a fuss.

I have found artificial sweeteners have no effect on me insulin response or hunger-wise, so I do drink them now along with a lot of water of unsweetened tea. It may be different for you, so I'd start out by dropping them and just drinking water and unsweetened drinks.

my first attempt to make Keto-bread based on this recipe was a failure - tastes like egg and cheese, but unfortunately nothing like bread (perhaps that shouldn't surprise me)

going to try this tomorrow, although the cakes have pretty much the same ingredients

I haven't tried that cloud bread stuff yet but I'm kinda wary of all those keto bread substitutes from blogs. They're pretty and bread-like in photos and they function like bread structurally for sandwiches or whatever but I wouldn't expect them to taste like bread.

Any advice on keta/paleo with out eggs ? Can't stand them

You don't need eggs but they're a pretty damn good source of nutrition.

One thing I often do is boil an egg, mash it up with a good dollop of mayonnaise and spread it over some low carb/protein bread (~2g of carbs per slice). Bake some bacon so it becomes cripsy to the point where I can crumble it and sprinkle that over the top.

This is my favorite pseudobread recipe:

https://theprimitivepalate.com/2015/01/20/everything-bagel-dogs/

It is pretty versatile - make brats wrapped with the dough as described, twist the dough into pretzels and eat them with cheese sauce, and make fettucine noodles and gnocchi out of the flattened dough. That whole website is great for desserts and things - the author was/is a baker and has high standards for her substitutes.

In terms of cakier, breadier stuff this is the best I have found, though it is a little seasonal:

http://www.intoxicatedonlife.com/20...n-cake-with-cream-cheese-frosting-sugar-free/

I love pumpkin though, so it is all good. I made it for my family last Thanksgiving along with pumpkin cookies frosted with the same cream cheese frosting:

http://www.ruled.me/pumpkin-flax-cookies-almond-butter-icing/

I liked both of them personally. They are really heavy and will fill you up fast.

And now, to end another long post with a personal contribution, OMG these are awesome:

Been on a keto for a couple of months now. Not to lose weight but to bring myself mental clarity, manage my eating disorder, and help with depression and overall mood/energy.

Anyways, I'll be subscribing to this thread and posting my favorite recipes later.

My staples:
Eggs with cheese
Flax seed fried avocados
Cauliflower and radish mashes

Really planning to go full out on this. I've already stopped eating rice, bread , banana, fruit, juice, for a week now and it's being pretty surprisingly easy thus far. Planning to add Avocados into my diet though it's currently so expensive at the moment maybe add a bit more higher fat food content as well. Also want to see how well I get with it later on.

Fellow Ketonians

I was at the gym this morning and done my weekly measure on the Boditrax machine, over the last week i have lost 3.8kg, 2.4kg of Fat and 1.4kg Muscle mass.

The previous week, pre Keto, i lost 1.1kg fat and 0.1Kg Muscle Mass.

Total loss over 2 weeks 3.5Kg Fat & 1.5Kg Muscle

That's quite a jump in muscle mass loss seeing as out of the 7 days i have been to the Gym 5 times.

Can I have a small portion of rice with my meals?

50g of Brown rice has about 12g Carbs, as long as your good the rest of the day you should be ok.

How's everyones poop situation? I was on a keto diet a few years back with great success and just started back up again, but I don't remember the hard, pebble like dumps. Apparently it's normal due to avoiding grains so I'm not worried but it's interesting to see the difference in effect.

Okay, I want to get on board on this now because I'm going full ham on weights over cardio (I used to do 4 days of HIIT per week, now it's 2 days and 3 days are for weights)

My meal plan since October was eliminating processed foods, as well as any pastries, tortillas, cereal, oats, and breads save for the whole grain one, but I've been finding myself having a sandwich for work each day. As well as french toast once a week... and while I've lost a great deal of weight, it's actually slowing down dramatically so starting this week I'm DONE with bread. I'll buy some large leaf lettuce and do like an In N Out protein wrap (subbing lettuce over bread) and use that for my work lunches.

Snacks I've eliminated chips, and probably popcorn now and just stick with gluten free stuff and nuts, raisins, dark chocolate, and the occasional trail mix packages. Surprised to see pork rinds on here... that explains why stores here have run out... lots of people going on a keto kick they can't keep up with the demand lol.

Thing is, aside from fruit, potatoes, and eggs it kills breakfast options by a lot. I guess I was raised to always have breakfast, a small lunch, and a small dinner (if at all or just a late snack instead) Are there any options that I'm not seeing? Fruit is okay, like a grapefruit or avocado here and there. Though on the plus side I can actually put bacon back on the meal plan as long as it's in severe moderation right? I was looking for bread alternatives but stores charge insane prices for spinach/coconut wraps so I'll have to get in the habit of making those myself.

On the plus side, my stomach can tolerate peanuts again... maybe I can try my luck with almonds. Seems eating bad foods made it to where good foods hurt my stomach, so I had to slowly adjust.

Might be a silly question, but how low is low carbs? 0-20g, 20-40g?

some stuff says under 20g net, others under 50g total, including fiber

I have been trying to stay between 20 - 25g net carbs (around 9% of daily intake)

My split is around about
57% Fat
34% Protein
9% Carbs

Might be a silly question, but how low is low carbs? 0-20g, 20-40g?
Start at max 20 net carbs (subtract daily fiber from carbs to get the net).

My macros are
70% fat
25% protein
5% carbs

Anyone using mfp and want to add me? Send me a pm as my account has my last name.

Make sure you're getting enough protein/fat if you aren't already. Use a calculator, http://keto-calculator.ankerl.com/ is pretty much plastered over r/keto. Don't go by % of your daily intake either.

i used a calculator, but not from that site, and it told me

167g Fat
93g Protein
20g Carbs

Yet i have just run that calculator and it gave me

168g Fat
120g Protein
20g Carbs

So for the past week i've been eating 27g less protein every day.

Quick clarification question on this diet....so it's net carbs of the food in question right? E.g. Carbs - fiber? So if I eat a Quest Bar that has 20g Carbs but 14g of fiber, I'm "on the hook" for only 6g of Carbs for the day right?

Need to get back on this.

My goto breakfast was mixing up a quarter block of cream cheese and an egg with cinnamon then microwaving it to make a danish of sorts.
