Could this be true (taken from prometheus-movie.com):

Weren't the Engineers running into the ampule room?

And if the black goo is a way of transporting xenos safely, then what is the point of mass-producing them on Earth when you can't get them off there?

Sounds as weak as all the other non-Space Jesus explanations.

So, pointless speculation: The black goo at the beginning is the same black goo in the urns, just repurposed to destroy humanity, rather than create it. Cruel poetic justice.

And then their own creation turned on them as if to say "don't play God." I dunno. I'm just making shit up now.

It sure seems that way

So I wonder what happened to this scene from the first teaser (I dont remember it)...

a2n8F.gif

that looks like Weyland in the background which means they were on their way to see the Engineer... but there was no confrontation in the final movie. Was the original Fifield scene meant to be much later?

Yeah, things clearly saw some big changes in the editing room. Another example would be Fiefield looking less like a mutant and more like a Xeno:

2BOlE.gif

Notice his elongated arms and 'claws'

The black goo is sin, the xenos punishment for sin.

Suicide
Sex before marriage
Playing with his snake
Gay Engineer orgy
Murder

There, let's see what more speculation can be generated from that!

Could this be true (taken from prometheus-movie.com):

Interesting. However, I actually think the Engineers basically found/made a substance to kill humanity and were preparing to leave for earth when an outbreak occurred on the ship. One of the infected engineers basically spawns a xeno (another variant - not proto) which is what they were running away from.

The ones running away went for the urn room because it was the safest due to the conditions of that room. Perhaps this is how that mural appears... the surviving Engineers carved it while in there (god knows what happened to their bodies though) after witnessing the xeno.

While the Engineers locked themselves away, the xeno goes out to the surface and gets onto one of the other ships. All hell breaks loose and that ship crashes onto LV-426. The infected Engineers on that ship with this other variant of xeno leads to a Queen xeno or whatever which lays all those eggs.

Ugh, so many questions...

Why is there a land squid? Is the black goo originating from a land squid-like creature?

Why does the xeno-mural not show the land squid?

Why did the black goo turn the spacejockey into DNA but turned Holloway into a squid-man? They are both human, right?

If these SJs are cultivating life, what are the chances of human apes prevailing? What about dinosaurs and sea creatures?

Why did the Hammerpede go inside guyhoodie's mouth?

It's best you don't think too much.

Space Jesus died for our sins, including Prometheus, so we don't have to worry about it.

I'm not a woman so when I saw the C-section part I just thought "She's a...tough girl". But apparently it's not in any way close to reality. Here's what a female poster at another board said about that scene:

I had a C-Section. Maybe they have really really good drugs in the future, but there's no way your stomach gets cut and stapled and you can shoot yourself up and go running around. No swelling, no staple popping...that Shaw was AMAZING.

I bought the Art of the Film, and it reinforces my opinion that the movie was gimped by Lindelof's poor skill's, and the editing room after that.

The inevitable director's cut might solve some pacing problems, but it will not make the movie's plot better. In the quest to ask large questions, Scott and Lindelof fell victim to pretentiousness and just plain fucked up.

I think the black goo was a terraforming agent. It breaks down dna then creates a mechanism for the DNA to recombine into a variety of useful animal and plant life. Just look at the squids. They chiefly developed from those worms crawling in the dirt in the room with the pods. It seemed to pick up other host DNA as the things interacted with other creatures so the DNA probably remains in flux for a while.

The engineers used that to seed new worlds for habitation. If intelligent life arose and developed to a competitive level, they'd send another dose of the black goo before colonization to reboot the process so they wouldn't have to deal with competition.

The randomized yet mutable nature of the mutations the goo causes likely gave rise to several undesirable and dangerous Xenomorph variations. Probably why they spaced the seed ships out.

Hey can anybody confirm that the scream heard during the holograph is in fact the same as the xenomorph scream at the end of the movie?

unfortunately going to see it again tonight. Will listen for it.

re directors cut;

Feels like the deflation after the PS3 launch. All of us are waiting for the games/directors cut to make the movie worth it... but its soooo pretty.

Oh, and if you can confirm - hoodie says something like, "Looks like something burst out of their chests" when he and mohawk find the pile of dead spacejockies, thanks :)

My fears.

Edit;

Will goo.

Whoa, those arms. He's not completely burned either, so this happened before Janek and dude came down to burn/finish him off OR it's an entirely different take on the Fifield attack that was scrapped.

entirely different take. I reckon it was also supposed to happen after they try to take Weyland down to the surface as my previous Gif shows.

EDIT - found another angle

Also...

an alternative design for zombie Fifield

and alternative design for zombie Fifield

Yeah, the way he died by melting glass on his face in the area/way it did isn't consistent with that design. But that thing looks sort of like the creature having a bro moment with the SJ in the ceiling mural right? Damn, I wish that I had that artbook.

just got back from a second viewing and picked up a nugget i glossed over before. during the starmap presentation charlie remarks "all the maps show people looking at a tall being pointing at the stars". i can't remember the exact wording but i think it gives weight to the fact that the engineers had visited earth and it wasn't just an invitation.

I really hope we get a sequel, I want to see Sparky (Deacon) in action. He looks like he could pack a punch. I'd love to see him go up against a Xenomorph.

Ugh, so many questions...

The black goo seems to mutate things. Notice that, when walking into the room, there were little worms in the soil

Why does the xeno-mural not show the land squid?

Because they were a recent, unintended, creation thanks to the black goo spilling on the ground

Why did the black goo turn the spacejockey into DNA but turned Holloway into a squid-man? They are both human, right?

The ammount? Or possibly the goo changed with age. Third possiblity is that they were completely different types of goo.

If these SJs are cultivating life, what are the chances of human apes prevailing? What about dinosaurs and sea creatures?

I'm not sure what you mean by this.

Why did the Hammerpede go inside guyhoodie's mouth?

Maybe that good has engineered instincts and traits for the resulting creatures it creates?

Bolded are my responses

Question: why did they have to eject the 'lifeboat', then send Vickers down in a pod, rather than her just getting in the lifeboat?

Question: why did they have to eject the 'lifeboat', then send Vickers down in a pod, rather than her just getting in the lifeboat?

I can't remember the exact sequence but wasn't the lifeboat for Shaw? and Vickers was busy trying to get them to stop but failed and only had the pod option??

He either sent it for Shaw or thought it would take too long for Vickers to run to the lifeboat- just going to the ejection pod would be best for her. Also space suits and squashings

Idris Elba told Charlize Theron to get to the life boat before they crashed into the ship, I think.

This is what I believe too; the black goo is just a catalyst for evolution, useful for seeding a planet with the building blocks of life. I also believe the Engineers eventually did not agree with what the Humans had become and were planning to start over with the planet Earth.

Thanks, lets talk more about this:

As for that SJ at the beginning, we are to believe that he's cultivating life by drinking the black goo and turning into DNA whilst jumping into water. So, this implies that he is adding himself to the evolutionary timeline of that planet he is on. So, for example if it is Earth (big if), how did the SJ's DNA prevail through Cambrian-era creatures and dinosaurs? Is this movie implying that apes only came to be because the SJ drank goo and fell into the primordial waters? That it wasn't something independent of the SJ?

Evolutionists have already shown that a planet can create and sustain life without what happened in this movie. A moon providing a tidal force is pretty beneficial as well. Why show this SJ doing this at all? What is the point? How does it tie in to the squid baby and the xenomorph cycle? Did Ridley say it was a metaphor for something religious?

You know, it makes sense that he turned into a zombie engineer... if the goo accelerates evolution, humans are a lower form of engineer... so advancing that would turn him into an engineer... no?

Question: why did they have to eject the 'lifeboat', then send Vickers down in a pod, rather than her just getting in the lifeboat?

Well they also couldn't have her see the squid baby that everybody forgot about... wait...

Where is Weyland at when he and Vickers are having that shitty "...father!" dialogue? It must be a separate, nice bedroom in the ship because if it was Vicker's quarters they would see the squid baby.

Why didn't Shaw tell Janek and co. about the squid baby? Janek was like, "Whatever is in there, we can't take it back with us". But taking the squid baby back is alright? That fucking squid baby ><

You know, it makes sense that he turned into a zombie engineer... if the goo accelerates evolution, humans are a lower form of engineer... so advancing that would turn him into an engineer... no?

According to that magic science device we are both human :/

Shit, the black liquid does whatever Ridley wants it to at this point.

But what would the goo turn an Engineer into? :o

No worries, Shaw is on the case.

Could this be true (taken from prometheus-movie.com):

Uh? He was running into the room, and other dudes ran in before him. Why did they run in the room? They trapped themselves in there with his head? Why?

Also in no way does it explain the invitation thing?

edit: I suggest you guys go back to this page if you missed this discussion yesterday about the purpose of the tomb/head room and other things http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=476464&page=93

Those unused scenes in the zombie fight seem really interesting. In the film he barely got inside before run over and taken down by backup. In the trailer scenes it looks like he managed to breach deeper into the cargo hold before being taken down in a prolonged battle. I wonder if they'll extend it in the Director's Cut. Maybe we'll finally find out where the missing crew members went! :D

The more that comes out about what was cut, the more it seems Scott sliced to close to the veins AGAIN -- just like he did in the theatrical release of KoH.

God I pray thats the case. Oddly enough looking forward to the release has me semi-excited. What if they actually had a coherent movie that I could enjoy!!!

Just got back from this, and... am surprised at how bad it was. It was like a great sci-fi story, told terribly.

It was absolutely gorgeous, but the characters and events and... pretty much everything didn't make a lot of sense.

I will never see a Ridley Scott theatrical release again. I've been burned by him way too many times now. This movie is probably one of the most disappointing experiences in theaters that I've had in a very long time. But to be fair, I don'[t even know how a director's cut of this will save the movie. The entire movie is essentially one big flawed premise/inconsistency after another. As much as my Lindelof hatred makes me want to blame him, I'm realizing that in some ways I think Scott sort of lucked into his masterpieces in a perfect storm of accidental greatness. Blah.

The movie was awesome. I think people are trying to overthink it.

The black goo is the fire of the gods. It simply creates new life.

It has an element of randomness to it, it can make us, or it can make xenomorphs. Depends on what elements it has to work with. On earth it made us, on LV -223 it made squids, on LV -444 (or whatever) it made xenos.

I don't really think the "engineers" made the black goo to kill us. As we see in the the opening they drink it themselves to populate planets. I think this ties into the punishment mythology of dying and being reborn endlessly.

Where they "targeting" earth to destroy it or was that the interpratation of the humans? It seemed to me that they where monitoring how life was going there...

Perhaps they where angry that we had forgotten them. I don't see that though. The sole survivor seemed to go crazy and want to kill everything for you know, survival. Any biological entity coming in contact with the goo could produce a squid. Better to kill them all and get the hell out.

black goo in beginning is different than the black goo at the end.

ReBold;

Thats why he took his time, then lightly touched Dave on the head. Before trying to kill everyone... batshit insane and out of control. I'd say he showed restraint, to a point.

How do you "overthink" a movie which is promoted by the creators as something that is supposed to engage audiences into thinking more about it?

Its an excuse people are using to just be contrarians to everyone discussing it. I know it promoted as engaging, you know it was promoted as engaging. Its Ridley Scott for christs sake, not like its supposed to be some popcorn thriller... But the same argument is along the lines of "Oh come on, so what the story sucked. Just turn off your brain!" Like its transformers or something.

No over-thinking necessary for this one. The mistakes are pretty blatant. Like Shaw's squid baby, the confusion will grow rather fast within you.

Damn straight. Actually, Transformers made a little more sense... the first one, I mean.
