that looks like Weyland in the background which means they were on their way to see the Engineer... but there was no confrontation in the final movie. Was the original Fifield scene meant to be much later?

Yeah, things clearly saw some big changes in the editing room. Another example would be Fiefield looking less like a mutant and more like a Xeno:

Interesting. However, I actually think the Engineers basically found/made a substance to kill humanity and were preparing to leave for earth when an outbreak occurred on the ship. One of the infected engineers basically spawns a xeno (another variant - not proto) which is what they were running away from.

The ones running away went for the urn room because it was the safest due to the conditions of that room. Perhaps this is how that mural appears... the surviving Engineers carved it while in there (god knows what happened to their bodies though) after witnessing the xeno.

While the Engineers locked themselves away, the xeno goes out to the surface and gets onto one of the other ships. All hell breaks loose and that ship crashes onto LV-426. The infected Engineers on that ship with this other variant of xeno leads to a Queen xeno or whatever which lays all those eggs.

I'm not a woman so when I saw the C-section part I just thought "She's a...tough girl". But apparently it's not in any way close to reality. Here's what a female poster at another board said about that scene:

I bought the Art of the Film, and it reinforces my opinion that the movie was gimped by Lindelof's poor skill's, and the editing room after that.

The inevitable director's cut might solve some pacing problems, but it will not make the movie's plot better. In the quest to ask large questions, Scott and Lindelof fell victim to pretentiousness and just plain fucked up.

I think the black goo was a terraforming agent. It breaks down dna then creates a mechanism for the DNA to recombine into a variety of useful animal and plant life. Just look at the squids. They chiefly developed from those worms crawling in the dirt in the room with the pods. It seemed to pick up other host DNA as the things interacted with other creatures so the DNA probably remains in flux for a while.

The engineers used that to seed new worlds for habitation. If intelligent life arose and developed to a competitive level, they'd send another dose of the black goo before colonization to reboot the process so they wouldn't have to deal with competition.

The randomized yet mutable nature of the mutations the goo causes likely gave rise to several undesirable and dangerous Xenomorph variations. Probably why they spaced the seed ships out.

just got back from a second viewing and picked up a nugget i glossed over before. during the starmap presentation charlie remarks "all the maps show people looking at a tall being pointing at the stars". i can't remember the exact wording but i think it gives weight to the fact that the engineers had visited earth and it wasn't just an invitation.

This is what I believe too; the black goo is just a catalyst for evolution, useful for seeding a planet with the building blocks of life. I also believe the Engineers eventually did not agree with what the Humans had become and were planning to start over with the planet Earth.

As for that SJ at the beginning, we are to believe that he's cultivating life by drinking the black goo and turning into DNA whilst jumping into water. So, this implies that he is adding himself to the evolutionary timeline of that planet he is on. So, for example if it is Earth (big if), how did the SJ's DNA prevail through Cambrian-era creatures and dinosaurs? Is this movie implying that apes only came to be because the SJ drank goo and fell into the primordial waters? That it wasn't something independent of the SJ?

Evolutionists have already shown that a planet can create and sustain life without what happened in this movie. A moon providing a tidal force is pretty beneficial as well. Why show this SJ doing this at all? What is the point? How does it tie in to the squid baby and the xenomorph cycle? Did Ridley say it was a metaphor for something religious?

In the trailer scenes it looks like he managed to breach deeper into the cargo hold before being taken down in a prolonged battle. I wonder if they'll extend it in the Director's Cut. I will never see a Ridley Scott theatrical release again. I've been burned by him way too many times now. This movie is probably one of the most disappointing experiences in theaters that I've had in a very long time. But to be fair, I don'[t even know how a director's cut of this will save the movie. The entire movie is essentially one big flawed premise/inconsistency after another. As much as my Lindelof hatred makes me want to blame him, I'm realizing that in some ways I think Scott sort of lucked into his masterpieces in a perfect storm of accidental greatness. Blah.
