Not sure if this was posted, but I think this was from yesterday's protest in NYC

I just heard about 100 loud bangs over about 4-5 minutes coming from downtownish direction in Portland. Any news? When they use flash bangs do they really use that many? Seriously seemed like about 100.

Damn dude, you guys stay safe. I can't find a live stream, anyone else have any luck?

Looking on twitter, there are reports of a counter-protest heading to the protesters. So hopefully shit doesn't get super real tonight.

Though I did find this from 46 minutes ago:

Fireworks? Was that what you heard?

OregonLive.com noted there's fireworks going off. I'm guessing those currently are the loud bangs.

Yep, just found a periscope of it.

Damn that would be scary as fuck knowing what's going on. Who's idea was that?

From the OregonLive live blog of events:

"8 p.m.: Coast Guard Astoria confirms the fireworks were unrelated. They were someone's last wishes apparently. It was a permitted event, fireworks from a barge, that was part of a celebration of life, according to Greg Merten, operation unit controller."

Sounds like it simply was poor timing that it coincided with all the protesting going on.

Oh boy. It was clear from how much police pushed for Trump to "defend them," but if they're actually hiding their identities, we're definitely in for a stronger, nastier wave of police corruption/brutality. And you better believe anyone challenging the man that gave them that power is first on their list.

I'm not sure how you expect Trump to be able to allow the police to cover themselves like this, right now. He's not even president yet. He might allow it after he's inaugurated, but right now, you can't really blame him.

edit:

Apparantly, according to comments on Twitter, the facemask is very common for the "scooter police" (which he clearly is), and the covering of the badge is just following mourning band protocol. I'd suggest checking this sort of stuff before posting, Lime. It took me literally 10 seconds to find.

edit 2: Also, if you zoom you can actually see his badgenumber.

Disgusting. Police turning into terrorists confirmed. Pretty soon you will see tanks on the streets, curfew in place and military out to make people go home or be shot or arrested. Not liking this future.

See my reply above. There's nothing new in this attire and he's not anonymous at all.

Couple of my coworkers today were discussing how obvious it was that these protesters were bought and paid for by George Soros. They said it was too sudden, that no one had been this angry before the election results. Absolutely ridiculous. Canadian guy and a gay American, too, neither of them Trump supporters. Go figure.

Is it even legal to cover the badge number? Zero accountability?

You can see the badge number. Only reason it looks covered is because a officer was killed in the line of duty last week. Facemask because he is a scooter cop and it is cold.

And I was doing it for free, how do I get in on the protest money?

This is a generation of complacent couch potatoes that don't know protesting or political activism if it stares at them in the face.

This is not what you think. He is not covering his badge number. Both officers are wearing mourning bands, which is custom after a police officer is killed. Those are also not NYPD badges, which have their badge number in a different place. As far as the mask, he's most likely am officer who works undercover and has been assigned to the protest. He would wear the face mask to not blow his cover. Happens all the time.

While the message is fantastic, I don't support them defacing the american flag in the process. You could have done that in a much classier way.
As someone not from America, I am genuinely curious why your flag is so sacred to so many of you... Why does this cross the line for you?

As an American, I think it's silly to get all defensive over the flag. I don't think people even really understand why they are. I know multiple people who are up in arms about the pipeline in South Dakota, calling our government shameful, but want people who deface the American flag to be arrested.

The riots are still ongoing?

I mean... really?

Is it gonna be this way for four years? What about democracy and respecting the outcome of the vote?

Back when I still voted in my country, losing only met you had to get better in order to win the next round.

As an elementary schooler I was told that if you were carrying a flag at school and dropped it on the ground it would have to be burned and I would probably be suspended (if you tried to hide the fact that you "defaced" it at least). It's so weird.

Edit: this was also right after 9-11 though I think

People's likelihoods are going to change for the worse under an imbecile who hasn't earned any respect and is undeserving of any he does have. If four years of protests is what it takes to make an administration and hateful percentage of the population that you have a life of value and will seek equality tooth and nail, then that's what'll happen. Calling it a riot fundamentally misunderstands it and ignores that such displays are core to American identity. America wouldn't exist, civil rights wouldn't exist, same sex marriage wouldn't exist without people turning out just like this

They're protests, not riots. The right to protest peacefully (emphasis on peaceful) is part of our democracy and they tell the people in power that not everyone agrees with them. It has nothing to do with the legitimacy of the election, more that not everyone agrees with the policies and rhetoric being spouted by the Trump camp. People protested (which was driven by hate) under Obama for eight years, I don't see why it's a problem now.

They're not questioning his legitimacy; he won and they know it. That's all the respect the outcome of the vote needs.

They don't have to be happy about it, and they have every right to protest what Trump stands for.

Exactly.

Respect the office, but you don't have to respect the man.

Democracy as in the candidate who won more votes is not president? There is no democracy in the USA.

There is a difference between excepting democracy and..

Rejecting dangerous rhetoric that emboldened bigots

We accept the fact that djt is President. We don't accept the bigotry and will stand against it.

I also don't accept people saying to give up thier first amendment right, sit down, shut up and take the news lying down.

its pissing me off that this needs to be reminded to people constantly, especially on social media. The ignorance is asstounding

Unfortunately, that's not how the presidential election goes. If elections were determined by a round of Smash Bros., things might be different, but Trump IS the democratically elected president, like it or not.

I'm not particularly pleased at it, myself, but there's not much that I personally can do.

Currently though, these protests seem...disorganized? I'm likely wrong, but from the outside they look like they're contesting the election results. That's not good for democracy, period. While everyone has a right to protest, their point seems like it'll be dulled if Trump ever comes out and has some plans that are more than talk that are worth protesting.

When somebody who's playing at autocrat says he has plans to do extreme things, you should believe him. http://www.nybooks.com/daily/2016/11/10/trump-election-autocracy-rules-for-survival/

I protest because:

- his stated campaign policies are unacceptable
- he's bringing extremists and charlatans into the White House
- he intends to undo decades of trade policy and international diplomacy
- his bad behavior has been exposed to the public and gone unpunished, emboldening bigots and assholes
- he is an idiot and a manchild

I realize he's been running a gish gallop on us all for a year and a half, but that can't let us forget why he's awful.

Fuck the flag.

:(

People can do whatever they want to the flag.

Defacing or burning flags is a valid form of protest.

Of course, doesn't mean it doesn't bother me any less.

Its a flag why does it bother you?

As someone not from America, I am genuinely curious why your flag is so sacred to so many of you... Why does this cross the line for you?

The American flag is symbolic of the country, its citizens, and their history. It's an important symbol representative of the freedom this country was built on. While I won't always agree with the choices politicians in this country make, I am still patriotic of the country itself and the citizens that reside in it. Millions died to see the flag continued to fly and any destruction of it tarnishes their memory and sacrifice.

As an American, I think it's silly to get all defensive over the flag. I don't think people even really understand why they are. Yeah, being arrested for defacing the flag is ridiculous, I'm just saying it should be respected and defacing it should be frowned upon.
