PS Plus Subscribers Reportedly Flocking to Cancel Their Subscriptions

It's a scam. They have that many subs because there's no other option but to pay it if you want to play online on console.

Not a scam. All three platform holders have the same requirement. It’s voluntary, and it does cost a lot of money to maintain servers and keep them running. No such thing as a free lunch.

If you don’t like spending money on video games, there are lots of free puddles to jump in and play around with outside 🤷‍♂️.

People have been much more vocal about Netflix subscription, but in the end of the day everybody still subscribed to it.

And just face it: PS Plus Extra STILL have a good value. Everybody is mad and I agree, but the question is wait and see if they will keep to good releases.

I eagerly bought Premium when it launched thinking Sony would add a ton of classics in the following months.(Yes, I'm a fucking moron for believing that). I was planning to just return to essential tier, but probably just going to cancel completely now.

Hey, you can get MGS for sixty bucks now.

Nice! I was contemplating if I should cancel it as I have a lot of games I’d like to play but you know what? Fuck that, I have an insane backlog anyway without the ps plus titles so it was just a waste of money anyway as I don’t play multi. I was already only subscribing when it was discounted because I felt that price was ok for me. But now? Haha, good luck Jimbo and co for continuing to drive Playstation into dirt.

I immediately re upped when I heard the news. There was a deal on PSN for $40 for a year until the 30th, jumped on that. So I won’t need to worry until late 2024

As per the prior thread, I cancelled my sub, I was only using it as a sort of gamepass really, to get access to the extra selection of games + what ever they crapped out once a month.

I don't think I have used anything online outside of games like elden ring where its sort of... added on for years, I play multiplayer on my PC almost exclusively..

As much as I want this to be true, my assumption is that a majority of people won't even know and it will just auto renew. It's only use hardcore gamers that are invested in the world of gaming that will know.

It's an absolutely shitty move to pass on the weakness of the currency during a cost of living crises directly onto the consumer though.

I only game a couple times a month anymore, and half the time it's solo. I only keep the subscription for the occasional gaming sesh with friends. I don't like this move on principle. Feels predatory. It might be time to move on.

IIRC - Last year - they gave a discount during holidays (usually when I renew)... if the updated (inflated) prices remain when it's time for my renewal - I'll cancel.

I don't really use PS Plus anyway (other than to play a few older games).. certainly not for online play - that's what I have my PC / Xbox / GP for anyway..

If essential is not $50 or under on their black Friday sale im out. Have ultimate now, no way I'm getting that or extra anymore

Would've been smooth if Sony only did these increases for new subscribers. In other words if you pay 60$ and keep auto-renewal on, your rate is locked in until you cancel.

They would've retained all these users and probably get an influx of new folks trying to lock in the current rate.

That would never work, the outcry would be massive same as the PS+ Collection when people that didnt have PS5s were bitching why they didnt get it as well.

I cancelled my extra sub last week. I’ll no doubt get Essential again next year when it expires as I play a lot of online stuff with mates - but I wanted to send a message to those greedy fucktards!

That's what walled gardens always are. You also have no option but to pay if you want to play PS5 games. duh
If it is not worth it to you then don't pay. Simple as that. Calling it a scam is a Karen buzzword and makes "criticism" look childish.
Go to MS, who also ask for money for online, or PC, where "free" servers are also not really free, but probably someone else is paying for it. Or use older consoles. Or abandon the hobby entirely. Those payed services are offers you don't have to use, like you don't have to buy the expensive sports car instead of a usefull daily driver, or don't have to bet your house in the back alley mafia casino.

I was just thinking how Sony would have handled the $1 xboxlive to gamepass conversion technique. They would have closed that shit down within minutes, but Microsoft just didn't care and at the costs, you could almost say it was bad business on purpose. This is the digital future everyone was crying for, own nothing, license games and pay more than a physical retail copy. Get smacked in the face with launchers, microtransactions, pay for online and other predatory practices. It's only a matter of time until the the industry either implodes or gets fully regulated.

I wonder if Sony is insanely confident over the PS5 "slim" and Spider-Man and they'd rather alienate some existing customers to lock in higher prices for new customers.

I don't think it is a coincidence that they're doing this in September and I think we'll see the new model release by the end of November.

I wonder when Sony will start including PSPlus dependent features in single player games.

Better weapons
Faster cars
Special skills
Bonus areas
...

So confident, do we know the price of the rummored CD add on for their digital only remodel? I can't wait to see how over priced it is to steer people into playstation subscriptions and a digital out of the box console. if the rumors are true true with those model leaks. Well played Sony, well playeded, for the stock holder. $80 dollar games when? and on-line connection required to play most games, when?

It may be the first time ever i'm not buying Tekken on Playstation console. Good job Sony.

I wonder if they have taken this into account. I don’t care for multiplayer games on PC (due to cheaters) and always bought the PlayStation version. Now I just don’t won’t buy games at all.

On top of that, I am bitter that, by cancelling, I’ve lost access to eight years worth of PSN monthly games. It makes me not want to buy any digital games, period.

At the old price, I was pretty much willing to subscribe for life. All they had to do was not rock the boat.

Thanks for reminding me, just canceled. 9/16 was going to be my renew date.

I bought a year of PS+ Extra when I bought my PS5. A year later and I haven't even completed a single game offered on the service. I also just play less games online these days. I might sub to the lowest tier if there is a discount in a few months but yeah, just not worth it for me at the moment.

You say yourself, look at what you're losing to take this 'stance'.

I sympathize with you not liking the price hike, but unless that amount of money really affects your life, all you're doing is cutting off your nose to spite your face imo.

Sony won't miss your money, the sub service won't stop, life will grind on exactly as before, except that you'll be missing out on some of it.

Life is too short for all of this foot stamping and woe-is-me, why deprive yourself?

Not a fan but I basically use two consoles with one subscription. So I'm still reaping the benefits. I've set my main console as secondary and use my account with all the stuff, then the house system gets set as the main for online play in any account. The moment Sony goes the Netflix way and revokes the account sharing between household members, then I go only PC (I already mostly play PC anyway these days).

Same here. Even put my wife on the job. I told her to remind me about this when my subscription runs out in may.

I said I’m going pc but she said she didn’t see me going pc as I like my comfy chair. True but I also said pc is getting better with that stuff. Get on it valve!
Lol @ comfy chair. Old habits die hard my friend.

But what if you were so disappointed with the price increase, and felt like you were getting screwed by Sony, that just thinking about it became a daily annoyance?

I know such thoughts, though not as pronounced as I'm portraying them now, but to me, feeling screwed and lacking integrity is worse than not being able to play video games from a pay service.

If you think like that, and there are people who think like that, you wouldn't be missing out on anything, in fact, you would be significantly improving your situation by cancelling your subscription.

Yeah, whatever is the optimal outcome for the individual is the way to go.

If the happiness and cost saving of being out of it and not feeling screwed over is more than the FOMO and loss of the games then that's fair enough.

I cancelled mine four months ago, before they announced the price increase. It's really not worth the money at this point.

And on a related note, Baldur's Gate 3 is $80 on the PS Store. What the hell is going on?

That's the digital deluxe edition. The store shows it as the default. You have to chage the version on the store to get the $70 base game.

Better scrub your credit card details as well. Sony will resubscribe you when you're renewal date is up. Even if you opted out..!

I agree with those who are saying online play should be free. If anything, they can offer a basic online experience for "free" and provide added benefits for subscribing.

On the rare occasion I play an online game, I will do so on PC where it just so happens to be free.

So with that in mind, *checks notes*, it's a scam.

They are simply willing to lose subscribers. That is their right to make that call. This is the opposite of MS who don't care to make profits and just want more subscribers because they needed penetration.

PS+ is not for everyone. If you don't think it is worth it then don't pay, Sony is not going to stop you. And this is not about arrogance, just economics. Sony is here to run a business. They are not like Microsoft who had an entire unrelated part of the company bankrolling the Xbox division.
This would all be ok if they didn't block save backups behind Essentials. So if you want to protect against a failure on the console and losing all your saves you have to pay up.

IIRC you can back up your save failes, but only all saves at once and not individual ones.

To back up PS5 console data to a USB drive

  • Connect a USB drive to your PS5 console.
  • USB drives formatted with FAT or exFAT are supported.
  • Go to the Home screen and select Settings > System.
  • Select System Software > Backup and Restore > Create PS5 backup data.
  • If multiple USB drives are connected, select the USB drive where you want to save your backup data.
  • Select the individual data you want to backup, and then select Next.
  • The file name and size will be displayed. If necessary, enter a description of the backup data.
  • Select Backup.
  • The console restarts and the backup begins.
  • You will see a screen with the message Backup Completed. Your PS5 console will restart. Select OK.
  • The console will restart again and you will return to the Home screen.

But still, wouldn't be too complicated to just offer usb backups à la PS4

20 dollar price hike is complete bullshit. If they made it just 5 bucks, I don’t think anybody would have really cared. I mostly just have it to play online. It’s like Sony and Xbox want people to go to pc.

I would love to cancel mine, but being honest, I'm thinking about grabbing one year on the current price, a year from now I'll decide if I renew it or not.

I see zero justification for a price hike for essential. The crap line about continuing to bring great games to service, or whatever gibberish they threw out, is trash. A couple sports games at the tail end of their life cycle are doing the pub a favor with last minute MtX sales. Saints Row? Are you kidding Sony? The game just put its dev out of business.

Remember Sony doing this for free while Xbox introduced this idea, and then everybody jumped because free money.

Lots of money needed to maintain servers and keep them running with no free lunches?

Damn PC people must be going hungry over there on Steam.

If people canceling resulted in Sony lowering the psn sub price, then I would care. Otherwise, I'm just renewing at the lowest teir and keep it moving.

Every other sub has gone up in price, so Sony doing it isn't a surprise to me.
