PS1 Appreciation/Collectors Thread of Ugly-Ass Polygons

I wish there was a definitive version of RE1. None of them have all the features while being completely uncensored.

To steal my own post from the thread about games that lack a definitive version:

- Original Japanese PS1 version is the baseline
- US/PAL one is in English but has censored FMV
- US/PAL Director's Cut adds arranged mode and uncensored Kenneth death but Capcom messed up and forgot to restore the uncensored intro
- French/German DC has uncensored intro but censored Kenneth death
- Dual Shock Version adds analogue controls, vibration and orchestrated soundtrack that's generally considered worse
- Saturn version adds Battle Game mode and exclusive enemies and costumes, but looks worse
- PC version is completely uncensored and has best graphics and additional weapons but has some compatibility problems with modern systems
- DS version brings in many improvements from subsequent games (180 turn, etc), Rebirth mode (new puzzles and enemies) and multiplayer but is censored again
- GameCube remake is brilliant but is largely a different game
I actually bought a copy of the DC from a friend the other week.

Got Tobal 2 finally! Game looks amazing considerings it age (both the condition of the game, which does have its spine card, and the game itself heh).

Reposting this stuff from the May pickup thread. These three came in the mail today:

Edit:

Not related at all but I didn't want to double post. I've been playing through the original Suikoden on my Vita having never played any of the games in the series and I've gotta say, its a really solid game. The battles are fast-paced, the story is moving at a good clip, and I like the idea of having dozens of party members that you'll be switching through throughout the game. The only complaints I have is the horrible inventory management and the laughable localization for some parts of the game. For the latter, its especially bewildering because some of the dialogue is actually nicely done, with some heart touching lines. Favorite character so far is Viktor:

Popped in Breath of Fire III today, and lo and behold, wasn't working anymore. Okay fine, getting a new copy on eBay or whatever shouldn't be too expensive, just have to make sure to buy only what I log in to buy, and nothing else.

One hour later, and I have BoFIII, Strider 2, Parasite Eve II, and Rival Schools on the way.

I'm too weak :(

This is why I stopped really checking out the SNES and Genny threads, and now the newer retro threads. :D

Thanks a lot, thread. Since this went up, here's what I've added to my collection (so far...):

Some are old romances, some I didn't get around to when they were released. Love this system

I bought a copy of the Japanese SotN on eBay for $20 because I couldn't say no at that price (not noted in the ad - it was a first print copy with the soundtrack and the art book). Well, it came and the case is cracked. It's one of the fat Japanese cases with a disc holder in the case as well as one behind the art. Is there any way of replacing this short of finding a game with the same type of case and swapping?

Whats the difference between Rage Racer and the rest of the series? On a side note, I remember Tekken being called Rave War initially...any specific reason for the name change?

No difference, really. Rage Racer is essentially Ridge Racer 3. It came soon after the arcade cabinet Rave Racer which featured different courses, but I imagine the title of the 3rd console title was a play on those words.

Gameplay wise, it's Ridge Racer all the way. Though they did add the ability to customize and buy cars with this title. And customize car logos as well. It's great. My favorite of the 32 bit offerings. The courses are a bit darker, but the soundtrack is still awesome and upbeat. It also supports the NeGcon controller.

Awesome game. Very under rated.

How difficult would it be for Sony to put a PS1 emulator into the PS4 software? Gotta be cake for a machine like that, right? I bet they're going to try to make that a paywall feature, though, if they do it.

I bought a complete copy of Tales of Destiny 2 from a person at another forum today for $70. It sells on Ebay for about $100-$130 depending on whether it has the case or not. I'm glad I jumped on it.

Here's part of my collection, loved my PS1 dearly, had some incredible memories with that console.

Import games (Lunar 2, The Silver Case (re-release) & Moonlight Syndrome) FF Collection oh and Omega Boost.

There are a few games missing though some very good ones, I recently started selling them and letting go was hard to do so I started with the good ones.
I do have a list of all games I owned before selling, which I will edit to the post later.

Great seeing some collections in here though and reading the memories. Nice collection of PAL stuff from hipgnosis, always nice to see PAL stuff I never did get my hands on.

Regarding RE1, The Japanese directors cut with the later RE2 demo surprised me, because it was different from my western directors cut and sounds like the precursor to the remake at times.

Right next to the SNES, the PS1 is my favorite console of all time. Its gaming library is outstanding (back when the gaming industry still was healthy and you could find awesome games in EVERY genre).

Anyway, I think there is one very important information missing in the OT: The Net Yaroze does not only look good and let's you program your own PS1 games, it's also the only official PS1 that is completely REGION FREE - which pretty much makes it the ultimate PS1.

Tried to visit a mom n pop videogame store that I always saw to try to find Suikoden II but it appears they closed a long time ago.

(._. )

Mom & Pop stores here in NYC are terrible for finding PS1 stuff. They all always have the same damn games: Greatest Hits copies of FFIX, Chrono Cross, FF Anthology, and occasionally FFVIII.

You have a better chance of finding SNES, or even Dreamcast games 'round here.

Yeah it sucks.

I would rather not have to wait for a PSN release that may never be coming, but at least I would get it at a decent price if it does.

I took a road trip this weekend to search for ps1 games. I have bought at least 10-15 already. Damn you thread! :p

My best find so far has been for Dreamcast, Skies of Arcadia for $15

Playing FFVIII, and making it a point to actually beat the game for the first time (only FF i've never finished). One thing I dont like about it: the weapon upgrade system. I understand everyone has their own signature weapon, but it doesnt really make sense to make some of the early upgrade items so hard to find.

Can you even buy them in stores?

No. I'm playing this along too currently. I just hit Disc 2 and I can safely tell you that you'll need to card mod a LOT of cards (Triple Triad is like... so much fucking more BATTLING than the actual battles themselves) to get the "tools" for weapon upgrades.

Following that, you'll even get nearly everyone's (except Irvine's) best weapon at the end of disc 1 or 2 even. You just had to play a lot of card games. And I mean A LOT. Like 20 Enoyle cards for Squall's.

Take my suggestion and go to GameFAQs and use Absolute Steve's FAQ. It'll help a ton with abolishing/spreading certain rules in card playing. Heck I should even mention that LEVELING UP in battles in this game is incredibly counter-intuitive.

I can't find dreamcast games around here, not even for sale at high prices. My best find really has been a psone for $5 or whatever and snes sunset riders for $20.

I've got 30 ps1 games since this thread, most off eBay or pawn shops. At least it's way cheaper than what I put into my 40 snes games. I think my most expensive game was $30 for skullmonkeys.

I comfortably consider my PS1 collection complete, but I went on a buying spree when the system was on its way out. Grabbed just about every rare title I could find.

Did anyone else get this demo disc with their ps1?

ps1_sampler.jpg

Spent so much time playing rally cross and sucking so bad.

I also remember this little bad boy

Ur3LG.jpg

The game that started it all for me. Spent loads of time with the bushido blade demo as well.

I have to echo a lot of the comments in here. The ps1 is by far more memorable than the ps2. Gaming was still pure and simple fun. The ps2 began the trend of cinematic games and the push towards realism and violence.

Ugh, I've really been itching to play either Arc 2 or Xenogears

and even though I own both of them, I'm thinking of double dipping to play on Vita

Any suggestions on which one to go for? And is it a big deal to play Arc 2 without an Arc 1 save file?

I believe it's strongly recommended to play all the games in order.
