PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

Are there any complete library collectors in here? After all is said and done a complete NA collection is huge but still doable, but heaven help anyone trying to get a complete JP PS2 collection. There are over 11,000 titles in that territory D:.

I'd like to picture myself as an NA one later on down the road, but we'll see how that goes.

Just knowing that I've got all of the games I'm personally interested in but only 1/9th of the US library is a scary thought.

Eh..no. I'm trying to see if I can motivate myself to get a complete 32x collection, and that had less than 40 games. Stupid Spiderman Web of Fire being stupidly expensive.

My PS2 died like 5 years ago and I had about 30 games for it. I haven't played any of those since then. I really want a new PS2, but it's hard for me to find locally. I want to play all my old stuff and I'll probably eventually pick up PS2 games I never had the chance to play such as:

Psychonauts
Ico
Shadow of the Colossus
Rogue Galaxy (Only Played Demo)
Dark Cloud (Only Played Demo)
Dark Cloud 2 (Rented, but didn't get far)
Black
Shadow Hearts
Shadow Hearts 2
Shadow Hearts the New World
Persona 4
Primal (Only played the demo)
Tomb Raider Legend
Tomb Raider Anniversary
The Punisher
The Incredible Hulk
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance (Belonged to a relative)
Mark of Kri (Belonged to a relative)
Mark of Kri 2 ???

NTSC-U? I have a spare slim I'd get rid of for super cheap plus shipping, just PM if interested

Hey guys I have a question regarding sealed games. SO what is the policy behind Security strips? Should all sealed ps2 games of a certain era have it in order to truly be "sealed"? Should I be worried if say a copy of Onimusha doesn't have the security strip but has a y fold?

I'm thinking about buying a sealed version of a game since I have a loose copy for play and wanted to complete it in the first place...

My library has quality control. I would never be able to own every game for any system because a lot of them are really shitty.

I forget the cut off date, but I'm pretty sure Onimusha would be early enough to have the security strip. But there was an Onimusha collection that came out later, which would probably just have y-folds, so it may have been pulled from that.

Yeah it seems most games after about 2005ish lost the strip apparently. Either way I have a few sealed pickups on the way. Will post pics if all goes well. Thanks for the input though.

Long live the PS2. In fact, I just ordered a PS2 game last night that I didn't realize was still (or maybe back?) in print (Tales of the Abyss). I thought I had missed out on it, but saw a few weeks ago that Amazon.com had new copies, and I finally ordered it (along with Tales of Symphonia for PS3) last night.

Very few models can. The earliest ones could, up to the MGS4 80 gig bundle. It was discontinued after. I had that one but it YLOD'ed on me. :(

I feel you. I've got a fat PS2 with games on a HDD so it's technically better, but it was just so darn convenient being able to play everything on the PS3 before it YLOD'ed!

I think my collection is pretty much complete. Unless there are some quality JRPG's I'm missing?

You seem to have many awesome games! I don't know if you've played these games or just didn't have interest in them but there are few missing that I believe should be in your collection due to the others already in your collection.

Castlevania Curse of Darkness
Devil May Cry 3
God of War 2
Grandia III
Grim Grimoire
Makai Kingdom
Phantom Brave
SMT: Persona 4
Soul Nomad
Wild Arms Code Alter F

I have the Devil May Cry and God Of War HD collections already, but I might pick up the other games anyway, since they're so cheap.

I have P4G already.

I also have the original Wild Arms for ps1. Is Code Alter F much different?

I did own Grandia III, but I sold a long time ago. I didn't play the second one, since I heard the Dreamcast version was way better. I managed to get the DC one recently, so it might be time to buy the 3 again.

I searched up the other games you recommended and they all look interesting. Thanks!

I figured. That's a dope collection btw. :)

(Have you played them all?)

Thanks! No, I stopped seriously gaming shortly after the PS2 came out, and just got back into it last year. A lot of those games I got from a friend, and then I just made a list of games I missed that I wanted to play and filled out my collection.

Where are Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2 and Legacy of Kain: Defiance?

Yeah, it's completely remade, even plays rather differently. I slightly prefer the original to be honest, but there are some neat things in the remake too.

Figured I'd throw mine up too since I just figured out a new shelving situation. Sorry for the glare on some of the pics! These are missing some CEs and NIS stuff that are back at my old place.
You are also lacking in Legacy of Kain... :(

My god, glorious.

In other news I got myself sealed copies of Onimusha 2 and 3 for really cheap
(Though the games aren't very pricey at all....yet.)

I already had multiple loose disc copies of the onimusha series thanks to gamestop selling them for less than a dollar a piece so I wanted to grab some complete copies before noticing I can just get them sealed for a little extra. I usually hate collecting sealed but they're so cheap right now, really recommend you guys pickup new copies if you haven't already, before the retro bubble catches up to ps2, even though they are some of the best selling games on the system I have a gut feeling they are going to be sought after (sealed that is) in a few years time.

I haven't played the original Wild Arms in forever. Good to know that it's different. I'll see if I can track down a copy of the PS2 remake. I don't have the Legacy of Kain games for the original PS. Can I just jump straight into these, or do I need to track those down as well?

Speaking of sealed games, a couple of mine have loose discs. Anyone know a way of putting the discs back into the holder while keeping it still sealed?

I cant decide whether I like Forever Kingdom's soundtrack. The intro theme sounds like a bunch of noises thrown randomly, while the shop theme is pretty...well...uniquely likable.

Code Alter F is pretty rare now so you'll probably have a difficult time tracking down a copy at a reasonable price, unfortunately.

I definitely regret selling mine long ago. If only Fry's still had em for 20 bucks...

I would definitely recommend them. Blood Omen is dated technically (plagued with loading times and slowdown, a low budget game) but it's still a great game with a fantastic story, atmosphere and voice acting, and it's available on PSN digitally, as is Soul Reaver, but if you're not just looking to play but to collect I don't know how easy to find the discs are. Soul Reaver 2 is a direct sequel to Soul Reaver (and Defiance a direct sequel to SR2), so while I the original LoK is still my personal favourite, I'd say it's even more important to play Soul Reaver before SR 2 (SR is set many years after the original and sort of starts a new storyline, so playing SR before BO wouldn't be as confusing).

Avoid Blood Omen 2, though. But that will be easy, because that game totally does not exist.
Like Highlander 2.

Oh? I didn't know I owned another rarity... >_>

I buy games I plan to play eventually even though I know I won't play them all. I don't mind too much if a game is dated if it has a good story. Thanks for the input!

Edit: I had a chance to pick up Code Alter F for a good price from the same guy I bought Wild Arms 3 from. I decided not to, since I already had the original. I guess I should have.

So um anyone know why Def Jam: Fight for NY is going for $30+ on Amazon?

Also, just browsing around I'm seeing a bunch of PS2 stuff that has seen a very rapid increase in value: Blood Will Tell, Mega Man X8, MS Saga, and a few more. These all were titles that you could get for $10-15 in the past few months but have doubled or tripled recently.

Hey guys, does the cache size of an internal HDD have any impact on speed?

I have a fat ps2 with the ethernet adapter and I was thinking of getting an IDE HDD. I can get a 250gb (8mb cache, 7200rpm) or a 320gb (2mb cache, 5400rpm).

I like the 250gb better but heat is a concern so I'm not sure.

stuff is being pointed out by YouTube videos and websites as gems. I've seen blood will tell on numerous lists and is mentioned as being somewhat rare as well. There's only ever a few up on eBay at a time, same with robot alchemic drive.

yeah, it's weird. most stuff on my list is still cheap which is making me wanna get it, cause others like Way of the Samurai 2 (which isn't even as good as 1) is creeping up there. fortunately, i need to buy back Vendetta instead, which is cheaper and has DMX.

Yeah I just noticed how much Metal Slug Anthology hiked in price recently. I got it a few months ago for 15$ new...I'm afraid of this PS2 trend...

^im seeing it here & there too, decided to get some of the last of the ones i was after - Def Jam Vendetta, Punisher, Stretch Panic, PaRappa 2, MK Shaolin Monks etc. most should be pretty cheap but i don't like it when they jump up outta nowhere!

Is Def Jam actually good? never played it

Finally got around to playing Kingdom Hearts. Man I am late to that party, holy shit. Debating if/where to get the sequel.

Which one's the best? 4?

Ace Combat 4 is a great place to start because it's common and cheap. All three games are extremely good. I don't know if I could say which one I liked the most; probably 5 because of a few missions, but they're all top tier games.

In my experience, the speed of the drive doesn't matter that much for HD Loader stuff. I'd go with the safest and most reliable drive over speed.

it's basically a fighting/mostly wrestling game with rappers - there's more fan favorites in Fight for NY but i wanted to have both. if you've ever wanted to slam Busta Rhymes' head in his own jeep door, you've got scarcely few other options.

Picked up recently Rez (Mint), Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter (New) and Sky Gunner (Near Mint) for $30. Never played Sky Gunner and saw may people on GAF highly recommend that game and wow, what a great little gem it is! Never imagined I'd have such a great time with this game.

Looking to pick up Soul Reaver 2, Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria, Gran Turismo 4, Ape Escape 3 and some of the Ace Combat games. Glad most of these are still cheap and I'd rather jump on them now and play later to avoid any sudden rise in prices if PS2 nostalgia starts to hit hard like it has on other systems.

What are people's thoughts on Musashi Samurai Legend? Worth $5? Heard it wasn't as good as the first one on the PS1.

^nice haul! i have Rez on DC but if i found it cheap on PS2 id have to import a trance vibrator, haha. ive heard Sky Gunner is cool.

eh, everyone i know that loves PSX Musashi didn't care for the sequel but for $5 i'd take the chance.

I haven't played it, but $5 is $5. I'd pick it up in case the prices on PS2 stuff skyrockets.

Holy shit at some of you guys. I think some of you have a bigger catalog than some Gamestops lol.

I thought my collection was decent sized but you guys put me to shame 20X over lol.

PS2 was really the king of Hardware and software lol.
