PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

I'll have to agree that Sony hardware isn't that great. My PSX purchased May '97 overheated in '99 and until I bought a PS2 in October 2001, had to play it upside down and then crapped out.

Phat PS2 went until 2006 and then DRE'ed. Bought a silver PS2 slim in September 07 and had it for a couple years then I gave it to a family member. Recently picked up a black slim and it seems that these are a bit more solidly built.

80gb Metal Gear PS3 YLOD almost exactly two years after I bought it and replaced it with an original slim during black friday a few years ago.

Launch PSP had that crappy square button and a couple dead/stuck pixels, then the UMD drive busted. Bought a PSP 3000 and that one has been excellent.

So Sony has an amazing library and I'm sure many can agree that the PS2 era was golden but their hardware has always had pretty bad quality control/build issues.

So I finally bought a Japanese PS2. Now I need a comprehensive Import Friendly list!

Any one Have some suggestions? Already bought Melty Blood: Act Cadenza, and
Ruroumi Kenshin Enjou Kyoto Rinne.

^nice! I liked Berserk, after the first level. always wanted to play Kuma Uta as well, haha.

Berserk eh? Gotcha...

EDIT- Looks great! Totally going on my "To Buy" list.

Kuma Uta? Never heard of it...

*Youtube searchs Kuma Uta*

I would get Metly Blood Actress Again since it closer to the current arcade version and has a bunch more characters.

If you're into mech games, check our Another Century's Episode 3 and Sega AM2's Macross game.

Dodonpachi and Espgaluda are must-have 2D shooters.

Phantasy Star Complete Collection if you are a classic RPG fan. It has PS1-PS4 with full English options too.

Chikyu Boeigun 2 (Earth Defense Force 2) - still my favorite in the series. Just be aware of its framerate and performance issues.

First post in here, hello! *waves*

I haven't had it hooked up for a long time, but my PS2 TV unit is plugged in and back in business! It's only a small screen, but it's a great system for tucking away in a corner for a stolen hour or two of quality PS2 gaming.

I plan on getting Actress Again, only went with Act Cadenza scince it was $50 cheaper at the time. Already looking into getting Dodonpachi and Espgaluda. Will be checking out everything else you listed! Thanks! :D

How good does the PS2 look on that TV? I would hope that, if they built a PS2 inside of it, the image quality would be pretty decent...

EDIT: Also every time this thread gets bumped I buy a PS2 game. This time it was Valkyrie Profile 2

I wish that thing came out in the US.

Quick question about the PS2 System Configuration menu: I have it hooked up to my HD TV with component cables, and I'm not really seeing any noticeable difference between the 4:3, Full, and 16:9 screen sizes outside of the browser. Do these settings only affect that, and if they don't, what would be the recommended option?
I've got a PAL PS2, and aside from the games that have widescreen support built in I'll be playing them in 4:3 more than likely.

while winding down my retro purchases, ive been sniping most of my PS2 list on ebay for $5-10 tops complete, with GS dumping their inventory & things moving along i figure ill grab what i'm after while it's good & cheap before YT retrospectives & the like jack rates up 3-5 years from now!

did you ever get GrimGrimoire?

^found that & Gitaroo Man loose while GS was getting rid of stuff, printing out nice covers soon for both!

speaking of, if anyone can find a good image of the Beatmania cover, lemme know cause i can only find non-US versions & wondersawn shit

No way @ the bolded. Especially when it comes to quality control. DRE city.

The quality control really was a joke. Have a PAL console? Want to watch your DVDs using RGB SCART? I hope you like the entire screen being green! Doubly annoying because the few games that supported 60Hz needed RGB because they output in NTSC rather than PAL60.

I just bought a component cable and I'm having a weird issue. Some objects in games look very 'noisy' and it looks like it's mostly affecting moving objects.

Is this because I got a cheap and crappy cable? Or is there a way to fix this?

The Hamster arcade ports are baller as hell. They bring a CD, a DVD, a little strategy guide, booklet with pics of the PCB and a trading card.

These are Renegade and Haunted Castle.

Righteo. I thought it didn't seem to be affecting the games themselves.

It does enable widescreen but only on very few games. Like nfl 2k5 has no in game option for widescreen but it does enable it if set in the ps2 menu. Few games also have hidden progressive scan option by holding x and triangle on boot.

Wow! Had no idea these existed! Now I gotta add these to my hunting list. How many were there? And how's the emulation? What's on the CD and DVDs for that matter? XD

Considering I own like 70 games for the thing, guess I can share this here...

The DS version has worse graphics and music, not to mention the changed OP.

KOF 1994 - 2004 (XI) and Maximum Impact.

Just missing 99 but I don't think it was released on PS2 so I do have the Dreamcast version :)

Just missing '99? Are you forgetting KOF: NESTS Collection (JP only, contains arcade versions of '99, '00, and '01), NeoWave (JP/EU only, US-released on Xbox), MI2 (aka KOF 2006 in the US), MI: Regulation A (JP only), '94 Re-Bout (JP only), '98 Ultimate Match, and '02 Unlimited Match (JP only; has worldwide release on PS3/360 download services)? There are a lot of PS2 KOF games... nice collection there, though.

Great system. I remember camping out all night to get a launch system from best buy. And last year I really filled out the gaps in my ps2 collection. Fortunately the games were really cheap compared to systems like the SNES or PSX even.

I'd post my collection but I'd need to come back to it. One question that's occurred to me, what's the most expensive US released ps2 game? Like its tron bone, or snatcher, or earthbound, etc.

the couple that got me last year were .hack vol 3&4, & rule of rose. And metal gear 3 ce is rare. But I got that day one.

^Jurassic Park Operation Genesis is kinda scarce. Xbox version even moreso. I think PS2 is still pretty young to be getting into the whole speculative rarity game though.

While I've never been all that partial to the brand myself, these games were some of my favourites on the system.

I still remember snagging a copy of GTA3 before I actually bought my PS2. Too many great games were played on that system. I even still have the HDD and modem that came with FF11 hooked up to the back of mine.

Hell I even went out and bought this Logitech keyboard controller to play FF11 with so that I could actually communicate with people (still own it as well), was pretty fucking rad.

Yeah, Hamster did a beautiful job with these. So much love and care put into them. I really miss stuff like this.

19 were released in total. The emulation is spot-on in the three games I own, Terra Cresta, Crazy Climber and Burger Time. All pretty basic though, it'd be difficult to stuff those up!

Here's Burger Time's contents.

There's even artwork on the back of the CD/DVD slip!

The CD features music and sound effects from the game, along with some super cool remixes. Meanwhile the DVD includes a playthrough by someone who's really freakin' good, pointing out secrets and stuff. There are also a bunch of trailers and adverts for other PS2 games Hamster were working on at the time.

Oh and the game discs look like 100 yen coins~

But yeah, the Oretachi Geasen Zoku series is amazing. Some of them have gotten really expensive over the years though. :(

Yeah I think it was a Japanese exclusive and the DS version was an english port some years later.

Twice, no less. It came out in Europe with a mediocre translation then again in US with a revised one, or so I think I heard.

PS2 OP

I can't even find a clip of the DS OP, but you're not missing much.

I snapped up Sakura Wars: So Long My Love from Amazon (I'm in the US) and this game is giving me a few Persona vibes. It's cheesy and more directed than Persona so far, but it's still a lovely combo of social/dating sim and mech SRPG. The graphics and overall polish are very impressive; the 3D battling looks great and there's a lot of anime cutscenes. The strategy reminds me a bit of Valkyria Chronicles, and there's a lot of decisions to make on how to best spend your resources.

Amazon's still selling new copies of the Limited Edition (comes with a poster, a fake playbill, and a copy of the game with Japanese audio), so anybody who wants one should get one now.

It's a fantastic game, but no one was at all interested when it came out.

I am so dissapointed. I was at my parents house organizing all my things including my extensive game and console collection. But I couldnt find my slim PS2! I loved that thing. I found all my PS2 games (I hope) but couldnt find the console and my Akuma fighting game controller.

I have my Genesis, Sega CD, Saturn, but couldnt find the PS2 and my Gameboy Color and a bunch of gameboy games. :(

Hard for me to choose a GOAT game for that system, out of a quick reaction I would say Dragon Quest VIII or FFX (excluding fighting games), just my opinion though.

It's a shame too. But I guess it's hard to get over playing a dating sim for the first time. It took me this long to buy a copy for myself, but I'm glad I did before the game disappeared.

I'm actually kind of shocked you can still get new copies of quite a few PS2 games on Amazon. NIS America, Atlus and Square Enix all have new copies of their games for between $20 and $40. I'm picking up as many as I can because I know eventually these new printings will eventually stop coming.

'99, 2000, and 2001 were actually re-ported from the DC versions - which is weird, given that different (superior) ports of 2000 and 2001 were already on the PS2. '99 port is good, with nice 3D backgrounds (though I prefer the arcade ones). They made a weird decision to render the image in 320x240 but run in 480i though, even though the DC version was 240p.

Huh, it's a port of the DC version of '99? That's very interesting! Does it have the DC version's other extras, such as two exclusive strikers, as well as the 3d backgrounds? I thought that stuff was DC-only... but I guess not. Interesting.

Nope, it has all of that - arrange soundtrack, 12 exclusive strikers (not just two!), and 3D backgrounds.

The arcade versions of '99 - 2001 are also on the disc, though you can't choose between original or arrange soundtracks like in some of the other SNK ports. (Which is too bad, because the '99 and 2000 arrange soundtracks are *fantastic*.)

Been playing on Jak 3, and something's bothering me; every so often when I press a button the input doesn't register. Now I know playing on a HDTV with component cables cause input lag, but this is literally just not registering my inputs at all. It doesn't do it all the time, and pressing the button firmly makes it work, but it's just an odd problem that I'm not sure what to blame it on, playing on a HDTV, or both my controllers.

I can deal with the input lag, but having inputs not register every now and then is frustrating.

I've been playing through The Bouncer for the first time (really liking this game so far despite the negative reviews) although the game looks very blurry. Very vaseline on the lens kind of thing. I thought it was my console but apparently it is a design choice.

This is such a great thread.

I own all north american jrpgs except for mana khemia 2 and .hack part 4.

Are there any EU exclusive jrpgs?

I've got a couple of Japanese games and super robots that I've been playing on a friends' nodded ps2
