I have a similar product for the Wii and it works just fine for me. People say they introduce input lag, but I mostly play RPGs and other pretty slow games, so I'm not one for noticing it. I was thinking about getting one for PS2, but from what I gather it doesn't upconvert the signal (like the Wii one does), and I was out of HDMI inputs anyway, so I just stayed with component.

The only thing these are useful for is if you don't have a component cable or input, assuming it doesn't add input lag. Even the ones with scalers aren't substitutes for proper scaling hardware, since they aren't going to do any better than a decent TV (they may actually worsen image quality on good TV).

It is effectively the same thing as this, just without the box.

I've never used one, but I'd agree with that. If you have a component input, you're better off (or at certainly no worse) using that. But I guess a lot of newer TVs don't even have those now?
 
So I bought a used PS2 from Amazon Warehouse for $80 and it was described as "Like New" condition.

Bullshit.

I just received it at my office. Sure, it includes the original box and manual/pamphlets. But everything was just throw inside the box with no wrapping/protection. The system, cords and controller were all dusty and have an odor. To top it all off; the dual shock 2's rubber cord is torn and shows fraying wires.

I'm glad I ordered this through Amazon, it's going back. I'll just cough up the dough, $160, for a brand new system.

So any game from any part of the world can be played on that no problem? Any other perks that come with a system like that? And congrats on that sweet pick up! Looks like a good price if you can play game from any country on that.
 
Picked up Okage Shadow King today through that PS2 Hidden Gems topic, didn't even check out any gameplay videos. "Tim Burton styled JRPG with ATB system" just kind of sold it for me.
 
Tried the Ratchet and Jak trilogies. Really shouldn't have bought these sight unseen. Eh, just not for me. Was expecting something more cute akin to Sly. Feel free to PM me if you want em for cheap.

Haiiro, it's also got value in that the test consoles appreciate in value in the same way a (actually limited) LE would, so I don't feel like I'm throwing money away (lol). Additionally, it doesn't just play official discs, but just about anything the PS2 can read (which, by the way, doesn't include movie DVDs due to licensing, as I understand it) including backups, homebrew, etc.. Additionally, if you look in to one, you want a console from NTSC-U or PAL, rather than japan. Preferably the region that you're stationed in since there are occasionally some bugs with certain games, and most japanese debuggers were produced before the console was actually international, so they lack the region free feature. However, I don't believe this applies to all models, but I'm not positive. There's a lack of discussion on the matter. Check out AssemblerGames if you want to educate yourself further.

Retro, if you just want PS2 region free there are quite a few viable options. Some more tedious than others. Swap disc, FMCB, modchips, etc. Also PS2s are pretty chip internationally, so you could pick up a foreign system.

yeah, it cost me a bit more than a modded PS2 and I can rest assured that my networth won't fall. Not the biggest concern as a collector, but a pragmatic consideration.

Wait what do you mean "more cute?" I put Sly and R&C (as well as the first Jak) in the same genre as far as art style is concerned. Curious what it is in particular that you don't find as appealing.

I'm thinking my post history is beginning to show a trend. Check out King's Field: Ancient City. It has aged fairly well, music's still solid, gameplay is fun if slow-and-plodding-fpsword-and-spell combat works for you. I have a personal preference for KF2, but KF:AC is still pretty terrific. It's one of those games that only a small small small group of people would enjoy, but those that get into it will reaaaally get into it. It's a relatively easy find, will last quite a while for someone who takes their time with games, and it's always fun to see some of those Souls roots.

I appreciate it and I want to love it, but yeesh, so easy to get lost.
 
Finally got my copy of Silent Hill 2 greatest hits edition in the mail today, time to check out if that PS2 fog is as good as I remember.

Hopefully I'll actually beat it this time to, last time time I owned it I got stuck on a puzzle :/

edit: It's got a damn full color instruction booklet to, and its a freaking greatest hits edition of a game. Konami used to be such a baller company :/
 
scooped up nightshade, armored core last raven and air force delta strike from a local play n trade

i hope one of them is good

on that note, the ps2 had a *lot* of arcadish flight sims. 3 ace combats, 2 lethal skies, aero dancing 4, the aformentioned air force delta entry AND sky odyssey.

Jak and Ratchet seemed more like...early 00's "edgy" Saturday morning cartoon-type deals. I don't know if that's the best example. On the contrary, Sly felt like 80's-early 90's to me, more innocent and light and just...cute. I hope that makes some sense. (Plus, Sly is predetermined 3D levels, and the other two have a more open world design.)

Never played the Shadow Hearts games, so I am very excited to dig into them. Covenant has a small chip in the case but that's an easy fix, PS2 cases (or cheap PS2 games) aren't exactly hard to come by.

And can I just say, now that I have both of these bad boys, they are a sight to see:

Yep, I realize the three trilogies are often lumped together as very similar to one another, but in reality Sly is pretty different from Jak and Ratchet, and there are definitely significant differences between those two as well, albeit less pronounced. Speaking of, I think the general "open world collectathon" nature of Jak and Ratchet feels a bit dated and of the early 3D era vs. Sly's more focused platforming, which I think holds up better to modern 3D gameplay.

Ratchet is practically the definition of linear levels. And there isn't really any collecting outside of optional gold/platinum/whatever bolts so I have no idea what mental gymnastics one has to go through to label it a collectathon.

And then when you compare it to Sly 2 and 3... yeah, those have to be the most unfocused open world platformers I've had the pleasure of playing.

Ah, FWIW I haven't played Sly 2/3 yet. Are those open world? I'm kind of disappointed to hear that, I hope I like them as much as the first game. I've only played the first entries of these three franchises so perhaps that's clouding my perspective. The Ratchet game I played was pretty open world compared to the Sly game I played, and more like Jak in that way, although to be fair in thinking on it further Jak was the one that was more of an open-world collectathon than Ratchet, certainly.

Both Sly and Jak's second games are a lot different then the first, for better or worse. For both of their series I prefer the first game. Sly seems less of a departure since it keeps the tone of it's first but gamplaywise it opens up and becomes more collection heavy.

For Sly they keep the samish style after the first one. Same for Jak, but the third game gets a lot more vehicle heavy with a new bigger open area. The story suffers for Jak on the third one even though the world design and gameplay improves over the second. The first is still my overall favorite in that series, while with Sly I really love the first, but some of the cool stuff in the third was just amazing to me at the time.

The framerate is way worse on Vita and maybe it's just me but it seems like there's a lot of input latency on the Vita version.
 
Yep, all region PS1 and PS2. Burnt prototypes for PS1 work fine, but any backups for PS2 need to be master patched.Dont know the exact model off the top of my head though.

If I remember correctly all 3 are loosely connected but each game has a different cast of characters with its own plot. I can't say how connected they are plot wise though.
