Yes you should play the first Shadow Hearts before Covenant. It takes around 25 hours to complete it too. Personally I found the first Shadow Hearts to be better than Covenant, but I think I'm the only one. I missed the darker edge the first game had. Covenant felt really bloated to me too, with the storyline getting side-tracked constantly that lowered my enthusiasm for the game. Those dungeons too, godawful. Forest dungeon, cave dungeon, wine cellar dungeon. They all felt like they were based on one concept that was run into the ground. I gave up on the game when I was in some sci-fi looking airship? with rooms that all looked the same. Anyway, enough of me whining about Covenant. I'm jealous of all who love it, wish I could feel the same way about it. Perhaps I'll give it a revisit some day.
You should also see about tracking down Koudelka which came before Shadow Hearts. It is loosely connected to the first game, but it's pretty good in its own right. It's like playing Resident Evil the RPG.
