PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

hardware-based BC is the bees' knees. Emulation, however, I only see use in when on a handheld. Why would I use a PS4 for emulating PS2 games, when I can do it 5x better on my PC?

As seen by the emulators on my EZFlash cart and PSP, as well as the array of home consoles on my desk, not including a PSOne despite that being one of my main collections.

Maybe I'm just a noob but I always felt like PS2 emulation was a hassle. I'll always keep my original PS2 to play those great imports but it'd still be cool just just play God Hand on your PS4 using the disc.

Yeah, it's not the best. But I don't expect the ps4 to do much better. Maybe there will be specific titles that have issues on the current other emulators, that will run well on the ps4. And maybe there will be options for higher resolutions and filtering and the like. But frankly I find it very unlikely, and if I'm going to emulate on a home console I would like to use such luxuries.

Has anyone played Nightshade? I got it this past weekend and only 3 levels in, but I don't know if I want to finish it because the controls feel funny as hell.

Are there any PS2 shooters aside from Gradius V and R-Type Final that haven't received a recent port?
Since you mentioned Gradius V and R-Type Final I assume you mean games that were originally developed for PS2, right? The only one I can think of that fits that criteria off the top of my head is Thunderforce VI.
If arcade ports count; Ibara, Shikigami no Shiro series, Homura, Psyvariar, etc.

Either way.

I just discovered that my capture card isn't very good with deinterlacing and converts 480i60 to 30 fps. Since the majority of PS2 games are 480i, this kind of sucks. I have my PS2 modded so I can force 480p with GSM, but it doesn't always work correctly. Is there some kind of device I can get that deinterlaces properly and can convert 480i60 to 480p60? I am assuming the Framemeister XRGB-Mini does this, but I can't afford $300+ for it. Is there anything affordable that can do this, that preferably uses HDMI? (I'm actually not even sure the Framemeister can do this, as I can't verify if it accepts an interlaced signal through HDMI.)

I have my PS2 connected to an AV receiver with component, which acts as a pass-through to send the 480i signal through HDMI to my TV/capture device. I would like to intercept the signal from between the AV receiver and TV/capture, so I can use it with other systems without having to change any connections.

Startech capture cards can do 60fps on interlaced games in AmaRecTV if you set it to 60fps in the recording tab.

I'm streaming with OBS. I have it set to 60 (59.94) fps, and in the driver configuration for the device, I have tried the "high motion", "low motion", and "bob" deinterlace settings, and each only does 30 fps (and even seems to mess with the resolution). It records at 60 fps, but each frame is doubled. With the same settings on a progressive signal, it's 60 fps as it should be.

Here's a 60 fps video after deinterlacing and here's a 60 fps video from progressive.

I'm using the modified Micomsoft drivers for it. I wonder if I shouldn't go back to the official Startech drivers instead.

is there a good step by step guide to install a hdd to a fat ps2 and rip your own games to it, preferably from the ps2? is that even possible?. if not, i'll take a regular guide.

Hmm, that is weird, thoughI only use AmaRecTV and sometimes Streamcatcher so I'm not sure about OBS as I don't use that.

This is also why I don't like recording PS2 games, definitely if they are in 60FPS. Though my other capture card Avermedia Gamebroadcaster can do 480i at 60fps.

I'm arguing with a youtuber on a Game Sack vid who thinks composite looks better than component for PS2 games due to him thinking it hides the jaggies when in reality it doesn't get rid of them and just blurs them...good lord.

Also, the only way to record 480i at 60FPS is to use a de-interlacer/upscaler/converter it seems as the output has to be progressive for capture cards to record in 480i at 60FPS.

I don't know about this. I feel like I've seen 60 fps streams of interlaced video. Couldn't give you an example though, so maybe I'm misremembering.

my avermedia game capture HD II records ps2 gameplay at 60fps in 480i, though I'm video-illeterate so I can't actually tell if it's interlaced or not????? i can upload some raw recordings somehwere if you want to verify

If you're not using progressive you're 100% likely using interlaced, and I would like to see some raw recordings as well.

Forgot if I already posted in this thread. Just picked up a PS2 with a bunch of games. Playing through God of War 2 now and will start Force Unleashed after. I forgot how much I loved my old PS2.

Just bought a PSphat Friday at a local pawn shop in amazing condition, looked like it wasn't even played. I mean it's a 30001 but the fan is still quiet so ya know it didn't get much action lol.

My five year old hasn't been able to play any of my PS2 games up to now because my BC PS3 died when he was still a baby.

He's spent the last two days playing nothing but Ape Escape 2. :) I missed my ps2 so much

What about the Xenosaga Trilogy? I'm playing trough the first one at the moment and I'm loving it... Yes I know, the second one is regarded as crap, but the third one should compensate for that!

The second one is pretty bad, but
A. It's REALLY short, like <10 hours
B. The combat system is a lot of fun.

And yes, 3 is fantastic.

Man I'm itching to play some PS2 games, with thr news of the PS4 being jailbroken, I can finally finish the Xenosaga and Shadow Hearts trilogy.

Anyone know if a PS2 arcade stick would work for PS1 games? I don't see why not but controllers can be finicky.

Additionally, anyone have a stick they recommend that's pretty cheap but compact and built pretty well?

A ps3/360 stick with a converter would probably be the most economical way to do it--you have it for any system/mame you want then. Not sure about PS1 compatibility, but I've never heard anything weird like that, aside from on PS3.

I'm totally new to arcade sticks, could you point me to an adapter?

What are some of the best games for PS2 that haven't seen remasters, remakes or re-releases on more recent PlayStation systems? I was given a PS2 at Christmas and would like to get a few games for it. I have a PS3, PS4 and Vita however and would prefer to get games that I can't already get for those systems.

Well if you're including the incoming PS4 emulated titles, it might be worth holding off a bit to see what becomes of that.

Otherwise.... The .Hack, Xenosaga, and SMT games on the PS2 are all good RPGs (despite Irish's post :P), and seem unlikely to recieve proper rereleases outside of emulation for the SMT games.
I might end up getting a Japanese PS2 this year!!!
Should look in to DTL units. Might suit your needs.

dev testing units. They're region free. playing NTSC on PAL or PAL on NTSC sometimes has issues, but for JP games it's perfect. Dunno what the price is like, but they're a neat piece of hardware.
Holy crap that sounds amazing, wonder where I could find those. I can at least get some Japanese units in America so I don't need to import or anything like that.
