PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

Holy crap that sounds amazing, wonder where I could find those. I can at least get some Japanese units in America so I don't need to import or anything like that.

Got mine off eBay from a US seller for about 130$

Judging by current eBay listings, though, they may have risen somewhat substantially.

Glad I got mine a few years ago then. I paid $100 to some lucky guy on ebay who said he found it at a Goodwill. It also has the network adapter and harddrive I've been wanting to figure out if anything's on it.

I hear some of them don't play PAL regions though.

oh man, get an HDD loader disc! i love playing that way, cuts back on loading times and wear & tear too

might be worth looking around assembler. They have quite a few DTL fans over there. They're not so common that the prices are any given point are guaranteed to be indicative. Got mine last year.

That said.... The PS2 market has been pretty volatile. They could've jumped quite a bit.

I'm totally new to arcade sticks, could you point me to an adapter?

I'm a bit out of the loop, but I'm sure anything that comes up on amazon and has good reviews will work.

Agreed on the DTL--takes all the fuss away and no need for multiple PS2s hooked up. They go in waves on ebay. A bit dried up right now, but $150-$200 is average. Some people try to list them really high.

mine has a little "Property Of Activision" sticker on it. Wonder how much licensed trash it debugged--or didn't.

edit: nothing with a decent price right now, but the most recent sale was for $91

I just bought MGS2: Substance for PS2 new from a store. Can't believe it's still available to buy from an online store.

Anyone know if a PS2 arcade stick would work for PS1 games? I don't see why not but controllers can be finicky.

Additionally, anyone have a stick they recommend that's pretty cheap but compact and built pretty well?

Namco stick is a pretty good one. The parts aren't arcade spec, but in exchange you get a nice, small form factor while still retaining robust build quality.

PS2 sticks in general work with PS1, and vice versa. They're gonna be digital inputs though, so if you have a game that requires analog directions or pressure sensitive buttons, the arcade sticks would be a no-go for those titles. The vast majority of arcade ports and arcade style games that won't be a problem though.

Alrighty thanks. And yeah, ~100 seems more like what I was expecting. Like I said, there aren't quite enough units for there to be a locked down price.

Wonderful, thanks. I might hunt around a bit, then, and see if I can snag a deal.

So, suddenly my PS2 Slim is having trouble reading silver discs. It appears to work fine with blue discs, though. Did a quick Google search and someone said putting the PS2 vertical makes it work, and sure enough that does the trick for mine as well... Is there any way to get this fixed? Or should I start looking for a new PS2?

you might look in to replacing the laser or cleaning the lens, at least. relatively simple and cheap.

You can usually open it up and adjust the laser pots. There's one each for DVD and CD mode. You'll need to do some tweaking & testing but there's a range that's appropriate and safe.

I think making it vertical change the distance between the laser and the disc and that helps mitigate the problem.

Over time it's only going to get worse as the laser degrades with longterm use. So another option is to use a hard drive loader and backup your games to a hard drive / sd card / ssd, but some games have compatibility issues.

Edit: for the slim hard drive loader isn't a great option though since you're limited by USB 1.1 slowness.

Is there any advantages to having a slim PS2 over a launch 60gb BC PS3? I found the slim for dirt cheap and was debating if I should keep it or use it as trade bait. I use the PS3 on both an LCD and a PVM if that makes any difference.

Thanks a bunch guys.

Weird thing is that I flipped it vertically to get a game to boot, then put it back horizontally just for kicks and I've been able to play for about an hour with no issues. Seems like it's just the boot process that's boned for now?

Will try to clean the laser but I feel way out of my element when it comes to opening up the case and replacing parts so I'll probably just try to get a new unit altogether if it comes to that. Thanks again!

you'll get better IQ for 480i/240p out of the PS2 via scart. 480p is comparable. I'm not sure about the input lag on that model PS3, but I would assume it's at least a full frame. Compatibility for 60GB models is pretty nice afaik, so that's not really an issue.

The PS2 might end up lasting longer, but that's hard to say.

It's probably the anti-piracy checks done at boot. However they check for a valid disc seems way more sensitive to an accurate laser.

I have a fat ps2 with a 40gb internal hdd. I'm thinking of replacing it with a sata hdd (with the sata-ide adapter).

Does anyone know what's the max size the ps2 will detect? I have a 1tb disc laying around but it would be a waste of space to use if the ps2 only detects 120gb or something.

I'm not 100% sure but I'm pretty sure it can recognize some pretty big sizes. I've seen a few people say their 1.5TB worked but I hear 1TB is the sweet spot.

Anyways, I managed to finish a 108 Star run of Suikoden III that I started over the summer. I've gone through 1-3 off and on since 2010 and was pleasantly surprised with 3. This game is really cohesive and consistent. I really want to play through 108 Star runs of the whole series, but it's kind of discouraging knowing that the best games are behind me now. At least I'm excited about Tactics and 5.

I'm finishing up Tales of Vesperia right now but I'm itching to start up another PS2 game. I finally finished the original .hack around two years ago and have thought about starting GU because I like the whole faux-online thing. Maybe I should try one of the Wild Arms? I put about 10 hours into the original a few years ago but wasn't able to get into it -- I've thought about trying out Alter Code F or 3.

Don't be discouraged; Suikoden V is great!

I wrote the official Versus Books strategy guide for Wild Arms 3 and really enjoyed that game, as well.

you would 3's fine, it just took too long to come together for me & never clicked like i wanted it to, personally

then again 2 is amazing and it had huge shoes to fill

Got a new (well, used) slim. PS2 image quality is really bad on my hd monitor. Luckily, have some component cables coming in the mail. Should help a little bit.

How do you guys play NTSC/J games?

Separate J-PS2, emulation?

I actually have a small collection, but I never played them lol.

Someone was selling PS2 games on Gumtree £3 each or 5 for £10. I don't think they really knew what they were selling. In the end I managed to get all of these for £15.

I had just missed out on including Grandia II, Star Ocean and Blood Rose, as someone had came and bought them for £3 each! Poor guy had to sell up to change his game room into a toy room for his kids.

Well if you're including the incoming PS4 emulated titles, it might be worth holding off a bit to see what becomes of that.

Otherwise.... The .Hack, Xenosaga, and SMT games on the PS2 are all good RPGs (despite Irish's post :P), and seem unlikely to recieve proper rereleases outside of emulation for the SMT games.

Should look in to DTL units. Might suit your needs.

Just checked eBay. They're expensive!

Hell yes, got Open PS2 Loader SMB working with Windows 10. I spent hours trying to figure it out. Turns out I didn't create a DVD folder in my Shared overall folder which is why I couldn't see my Ethernet games. Dumb mistake but happy it works. No more wasting away the life of the laser.

Just need new controller and component cables to come in the mail and I'll be all set.

Anyone an Armored Core fan? When did the series get good? I have Silent Line, were there any other stand-out PS2 entries?

Japanese PS2.

On this beautiful limited edition Japanese PS2:

I still need to find my wife's white controller since it looks really hot.

Before I got ahold of that I used to back them up and burn ESR enabled backup copies. A DTL unit or modchip is probably preferable but a JP PS2 is pretty cheap.

SwapMagic with a flip top case mod. Beats using a slide tool to manually pull out the disc tray, just open up the top like a PS1 and swap discs.

3 is also very excellent, that and Silent Line are pretty good companion games since you can transfer data from 3 to SL. Those two right there are probably the series' high point on the system, though I'd say Nexus, Nine Breaker, and Last Raven are very much worth playing as well despite some sort of divisive mechanics changes. Each of them bring something worthwhile to the franchise as a whole.

It's really only 2 and Another Age that are skipable unless you're really curious about what they were like.

I was hella angry that my DS2 wasn't working but lo and behold the Dualshock 1 works on PS2 as well. Only difference is no analog buttons but not a big deal.

The transition from PS1 to PS2 is smooth as hell. The only hiccup is you can only save PS1 games on a PS1 memory card. Everything else was pulled off flawlessly. Perfect way to migrate an entire gaming population to a new system.

I believe, though I may be misremembering, that ps1 controllers won't work with all ps2 games. Something to be aware of, I suppose.

Anything that needs those dumb analog buttons doesn't work. Even if you wouldn't think they do, they might. Star Ocean 3 doesn't work properly for one.

PS1 pressure sensitive buttons don't work on MGS2. Its not a big deal though, if you want to let your weapon down after aiming you can just de-equip with R2.

I thought I remembered something more holistic than that. Might be one of those childhood misconceptions, though.

speaking of HDLoader, ive been recently playing Yakuza for the first time and its wonderful! playing it on HDD is great because there are little to no load times. however after, like, 45 minutes to an hour of playing, it freezes after loading a new street. anyone have any issues similar to that and know the reason/a fix?

Don't know about that specific game, but HDD loading does fuck up a few games.

Started Persona 3 just yesterday and hot damn I'm already 6 hours in. It has me hooked in a way Persona 4 didn't (altho I still like that game a lot too). Have read repeatedly on forums that playing 4 first will sour 3, but no such experience of that here.
