PS3 @ E3: "Change The Gam3"

McFly said:
After an other look at it, there are four different ads:

Red: Shows 1/3 of each button symbol

Violette: Shows 1/2 of each button symbol

Blue: Shows 1/2 of each button symbol, but not centered

Green: Shows 2/3 of each button symbol

From top to bottom the symbols are triangle, circle, cross, square (on the pad that's clockwise from top).

Fredi
Did we really need that?

Just ignore him.

I've just seen a bug in my list (or Sony's ad). On the green advert, the square symbol should be 2/3 like all the other symbols on the green ad, but it's actualy only 1/2 ... why?

I think we have the solution to the riddle: "Welcome Chang3" meens that something will change. Now if you look at the symbols, they are dissolving, from 2/3 to 1/3, so the change will be with the controler that will be completly new and not have those buttons anymore. :)

A winner is me! I nailed that on the first page already!

Probably the best explanation sofar, then again it might just be abstract and meaningless.

I'm really interested to see what they do with the controller. And a little more specifically, eyetoy.

Was just going to post about this campaign - arrived to LAX and hour ago and now in The Standard enjoying a beer.

Details:

- Big billboards with dissolving / partial triangle/square/cross/circle symbols
- Text using PS2 and PSP font - "Welcome Chang3"
- The last letter 3 is red

My interpretation:

Dissolving controller symbols + "Welcome Chang3" = New Controller

.

That would be a serious gamble to do such a thing: those buttons, their icons, are something strong in Sony/SCE's marketing campaign and ARE PlayStation.

I think the change is something else.

A little bit of a longshot, but maybe it represents the decreasing reliance on standard controls for next gen games? If every PS3 has a next-gen eyetoy, I think you'll see the camera increasingly complement the controller in a lot more games, taking away from it some types of control that make sense.

A long shot, remember :p I have my doubts sony will stick a infrared eyetoy in every box.

Well are the symbols really dissolving or forming together as a lead up to E3? If you go by IGN's video they're slowly coming to shape.

Welcome change...hmmm, based on the ads and slogan, I'm gonna' go with Sony introducing a new Dual Shock controller that is completely customizable, but also features other goodies that'll totally seperate it from the controllers of today.

"Change The Game3"/"Welcome Change" as a slogan are preety weird since PSX to PS2 "change" is basically more of the same. I guess Sony is finally going to go innovate a little bit this coming gen?

Yeah, something important will change and I really think it's the controler.

I really doubt they'll completely redo dualshock... and they won't get rid of the symbols. X, O, triangle, and square is Sony.

What are the colors again? Maybe it goes in the order of the spectrum... but I'm to lazy to check and see what colors Sony used.

Blue, Green, Pink and Red.

Hmm, not exactly ROYGBV, but if you're trying to find out whether the symbols are dissolving or forming, going RGBP would be your best bet.

EDIT: Not like it matters, anyway. You could take dissolving as meaning getting rid of the old controller. But you could take forming as meaning building a new controller.

PS2 realtime is nowhere near as good, but I'll bet PS3 could make up the difference, and developers could make more of an interactive sequence. [/QUOTE]

the series catches a lot of flack at GAF, but the real-time cinematics in jak II and jak 3 are amazing, in my opinion.

Would it absolutely kill them to at least take Nintendo and Microsoft's (and Sega's, for godsakes) "lead" and move that damned analog stick? You'd think we're asking for Ken's first-born here.

Well I don't think we've seen the symbols full yet. It seems to start with the symbols almost gone and builds from there to the symbols being almost complete. I can understand Sony changing the controller, but they've actually built marketing campaigns around those symbols. It just wouldn't make any sense to get rid of them.

Without completely copying 360's controller? It'd be okay, but well, that's "copying." :)

And I really don't think moving one analog stick would be reason enough to start such an ad campaign.

On a slightly off topic note, someone should scout out Sony Picture Studios in Culver City for PS3-related goings-on. Anyone with an invite for tomorrow should know which studio number they're using, and you can get into the complex on "tours"..just lose yourself in crowd and go a-snooping.. Forget about the LA convention center - that's where your scoop is! ;)

Anyone know if the shapes become more or less complete going toward the convention center? In other words, is this the order toward the convention center:

Red: Shows 1/3 of each button symbol
Violette: Shows 1/2 of each button symbol
Blue: Shows 1/2 of each button symbol, but not centered
Green: Shows 2/3 of each button symbol

or are they randomly placed?

I don't think there's any way they'd change them, either. True, they make gameplay descriptions a bit more of a bitch to relay (in written form), but the symbols already have a place in the minds of consumers.

Makes sense, and this is why I don't really think they're talking about the controller.

Its next-gen, everything a lot of stuff will be chang3d.

I have had a crazy idea...

If we take those half buttons. Half triangle, half circle... All of them make 8 pieces. Just like cell's SPEs number.

I start to think this adds are just a hint of what PS3 is gonna be, in terms of multicores.

Those symbols brought us ICON PASSING in NBA Shootout '97. Long live the icons.

Anyway, I'm wondering if there is any connection between this and the horrendously vague "hints" people have been dropping about Sony having a big announcement. I think somebody even said it was a huge deal but was not about a specific game or franchise.

Splitting attention between E3 and final exams... ugh... :D

I think there must be an other hint. Two things that are not in line with the rest:

1. On the green advert, the square symbol should be 2/3 like all the other symbols on the green ad, but it's actualy only 1/2

2. On the blue advert the symbols are not centered

Not far off.

People are so touch about this issue :lol
I like it fine as it is. Why should they move it up there, has anyone ever complained that the right stick positioning on GC and Xbox controlers gave them problems aiming in FPS games?

Not far off.
Meh, don't even go there. Aki's hair alone put that thing to shame. Especially if you look at the framerate as a factor.

The difference would come in with animation, not that The Spirit Within has ia that great in that department. And it was rendered to much higher resolution. Still, GoW looks great, I'm just wondering if it would look wierd when those characters get shot in the face, would there be blood?

Why would they want to make such a foolishly backwards step, though?

Outside the character models It's not really that impressive.
games like next gen Devil May Cry should look alot better than this.

Please stfu, why are you pretending to be a Sony fan now? The game looks fucking incredible; I doubt any PS3 game will be able to match it (graphically).

oh, I think youll be surprised. :)
btw, I'm not a Sony fan I'm a fan of whichever console I think will have the best games.

Why not? While the difference in power is still in question, PS3's technical superiority over 360 isn't open for debate. The best third parties in the world will be using that power to make games. Why can't a PS3 game match GoW?
