Ernst & Young, Microsoft to use Home to hold virtual meetings

PlayStation Home will be host to a few virtual meetings operated by Ernst & Young to reduce carbon emissions. The hope is that a suitable online world will help eliminating the daily need to commute and meet in real-world offices. The project is being led by Dr. Nipan Maniar and Manish Malik from Portsmouth University and includes other participants, like Microsoft and Merill Lynch.

"Audio and video-conferencing solutions have emerged but the use of virtual worlds may offer the next evolution in overcoming the tyranny of distance - a more realistic and learning-enhanced environment," Andrew Mawson, managing director of Advanced Workplace Associates said.

As bloggers, we certainly know the benefits of telecommuting. Who knows? Maybe in the future all of us will be able to work from home and log in to the office using our PlayStations.

Why launch home to watch a trailer in semi retarded full view? It's not even in a very good resolution

Sorry if I wasn't clear. I wasn't saying that it had nothing new, I was asking if anything new had been added(I was away from my PS3 at the time). please don't be mean to me:D

They also ran (still running ?) 12 days of trivia competition in Home. You have to post your answers to the Home forum though.

I launch Home to chat with friends. Once you get some friends on your friend list you'll see what HOME really is, and that's a social network and not a video game.

I do have friends on home, including some family back home in ny, and it still sucked. It's not even good at socializing because 1) typing on a controller sucks 2) they removed voice chats usefulness and 3) most people didn't have a mic to begin with severely hampering communication.

Even the SOCIAL activities like bowling, pool, and chess, requires you to stand in a virtual line. The only social activity in home that doesn't have you standing in a line is having a lame ass dance off with the worst running man and cabbage patch I've ever seen.

EDIT: And the theater is just stupid. They show an ad.....ONE AD! I mean damn they could at least show blu-ray/current sony picture movie trailers. They show 1 damn trailer smh

For those of you who haven’t already met me, I’m CydoniaX, the PlayStation Home Community Manager. I wanted to give you a quick update on new content coming to PlayStation Home this week.

First, the Red Bull space is going live! You’ll be able to access it through your World Map by clicking on the Red Bull Air Race map tile. From there you can explore this tropical island and take part in different Red Bull events. This week you’ll be able to get inside the cockpit of a Red Bull Air Race plane and compete against other flyers on the Red Bull Air Race course. This is just the start of what we are working on for Red Bull Island with more to come in the next few months.

And last but not least, SCEA is adding Resident Evil: Degeneration themed T-shirts for all fans of the movie we showed a sneak peek of over the holiday break. Please check back here in the next few days to find out when we go live with this update.

NXE allows you to chat with friends who are in the same game, a different game, the dashboard, watching a Netflix movie or a trailer etc.

Not sure if I understand the value of having everyone quit what they are doing, launch Home and all run down to a designated spot to talk. Seems like a lot of hassle.

I'd say talking to new people you've never met before could be considered a value, but friends you already know? I don't get it....

Along with chatting with friends this also seems like a ton of work to watch a random trailer you can't control. Why not just browse all the trailers on PSN and watch the ones you want in better resolution?

Doing things in Home is just much more time consuming than it should be. If you like running around and going thru load screens as an avatar, I suppose it's a good fit, but if you just want to watch a movie, trailer or chat with friends it seems like a ton of work.

It's just goofy to use Home for those purposes. It's a place to walk around and chat or see other avatars not to chat with people you already have on your friends list or do things you could do much easier thru PSN.

It's like you only have a hammer, so everything starts to look like a nail. PSN is a better tool for most Home jobs.

All too true. I would never even consider talking to people I know via this shitty interface. Even though one can have these AWESOME bubble machine dancing parties which everyone loves
or so I have been told
.

The videos in Home are usually stuff I won't download myself... like that Twilight movie trailer. Coincidentally, it came up over a dinner topic in one of my new year parties. My friend's wife was saying the young couple was voted best "couple" in 2008 (I had no idea !). In any case, I remembered the trailer and thought perhaps it's one of those ways where Home can keep one posted about what's happening in pop culture even if I'm not keen to follow them.

Right now, Home is a loose, exploration type of experience. Nothing serious and not very useful.

Very true ! And I hope they optimize the experience so that PSN can do those too. Then Home is a layer on top.

Right now, it is meant for netizens who love that kind of stuff. For others who just want to use a service, they probably should stay with PSN.

It's like you only have a hammer, so everything starts to look like a nail. PSN is a better tool for most Home jobs.

Not really. Home is a different animal. Even if PSN may offer the basic/foundation services, Home will appeal to a different crowd. Trying to limit Home to PSN services is shoehorning.

tried this out the other day for a laugh. and given the horrendous character i created, it gave me and my mate about 15 minutes of hilarity :P walking up and randomly pointing at people and dancing in front of them got pretty tired pretty fast though...

the loading going into the areas is awful, it has horrible slowdown when you're walking around in the plaza (especially surprising considering it's sony's own software) and the whole place feels like an abandoned amusement park or some kind of failed housing estate. some of the newer stuff coming to it sounds ambitious but the whole thing was just soulless and sterile. given the loading times i can't see myself bothering to load it up again.

The main things that really bothers me about Home is the long load times when moving from one space to the other, it should be more seamless. Also when I try to launch Warhawk I cannot move from one space to the other or I'll lose the game that I was trying to launch....:/

the load times are inexcusable. the whole thing just reeks of 'design by committee' - the character stylings are horrid and strangely robotic, the spartan 'rich young executives' apartment and furniture and stuff just seems completely out of touch and even vaguely depressing. the fact you even have to pay real money to get extra stuff in your apartment makes it even more so.

for me, there's just no sense of fun to any of it. if they had used xbox/wii'ish avatars at least it would have more of a escapist feel.

That is a big problem. They should fix it.

I gathered 2-3 new friends in Home and move from space to space. Home kept us together in the same instance. So the game session should definitely stay intact across spaces.

I go there every day. There are still many people around in my instance. In fact, I am in Home right now.

If Sony can earn more $$ from Home, and enough people are happy with it, Sony will keep it.

Yeah, if just 10% of the people currently visiting Home is stupid enough to spend that much money on a t-shirt Sony will definitely keep it.

I don't understand why they don't have more content by now. Why don't they show different trailers of games and movies is beyond me...maybe they want people to subscribe to QORE.

Not really. They have changed the trailer. During the holidays, it was the first 10 minutes of Resident Evil: Degeneration. Before that, it was the Twilight trailer. Even earlier, it was some horror game trailer. I don't know what's on now.

In the mall, they'd show the PULSE video since it launched over and over again. Argh, I hate Christina Lee now.

In the central plaza, they showed assorted game trailers but I forgot what I saw already :)

That's not true, there was a new Pulse episode the last time I went in the mall. In fact, I think it was on the day the new Pulse episode was release.

Yeah, I know. They showed both PULSE videos in the mall so far. But still Christina Lee right ?

Now I remember her face everytime I see a chess board.

Home sure is one creepy ass chat room right now. Hopefully we actually get some real content soon. Ill just take free virtual junk from earning trophies! Thats actually all I really want out of home. Arcade units and what not.

I can never understand the "creepy" comment.

I have met quite a few reaonsable guys and gals in home so far, plus plenty of silly people, and some rude ones. They are just like forum posters.

Sony should give us more items though. Now many people wear the same shirt and dress.

The top priority is probably to get game launching support in order, followed by frequently updated content.

As many movies that have been release or are coming soon their should be more variety imo. Also, games which is what HOME is suppose to be for...why don't we see more advertisments it can help sell more games imo.

@CydoniaX
When is HOME going to get the ability to have picture frames, tv’s, and radios in the personal space? When will there be custom soundtracks for HOME? When is there going to be custom wallpapers for your personal space?

CydoniaX replied on January 7, 2009 at 5:32 pm

We are continuing to work toward this because we know it is a big desire for the community. The technical capabilities are there and many things are possible. But we have nothing to announce at this time.

HOME is good for Sony as a lot of people spend money on it, and the ads help. But for me as a tech nut and the primary reason I chose a PS3, it's slow, cumbersome and offers me the gamer nothing. Ice Breaker and the Train game are fun but not lasting.

Please put these features into the XMB Sony.

he probably means the soulless avatars, rather than the people using it. from what i could see people were fairly friendly and chatty, so i doubt that'd be the problem.

if it just loaded up faster and was a bit more seamless to use it'd have some kind of use, imo.
