Reuters is saying that SCE cancelled the March conference to unveil PS2's successor on the grounds that they didn't have it ready in time. Whether or not it will be unveiled before E3 is unknown, but right now all efforts are focused preparing for E3.

They may show off tech demos at E3, but they will not reveal the console case in the US before Japan.

Back in 2000, they were going to unveil the PS2 design at E3 in a clear pyramid above the Gran Turismo 2000 playable tech demo booth. It was all ready to go, and then SCEI shit a brick about it being shown in the US before Japan so they pulled it a couple hours before the show opened and the pyramid was empty.

Hehe. But what if they are more afraid of info getting leaked? It also doesnt look like Nintendo is going to reveal too many critical concepts on Rev at E3.

BINGO. But they will not wait until TGS to show the system itself. Therefore, a pre-E3 showing in Tokyo should still be expected.

I don't know, I think there's a lot at stake this E3, especially if Xbox 360 and Revolution are shown (Xbox is almost guaranteed, of course). They might feel the *need* to make a showing just to counter the hype. Besides, all of these companies over the past years have been starting to realize how the US is a much bigger market and while the homeland is important, a lot of the money is really made here. The situation has changed a lot within this generation. I think we might just see it this time.

Here it is for some people that dont know how to translate:

SONY, the announcement regarding the next generation machine "of ???? 2" is not done in March, 2005 March 30th Wednesday 14:15 JST Page for printing [ Tokyo 30th Reuters ] the SONY computer entertainment of SONY & the group (SCE), game machine "place t Shaun 2" for home (PS2) in March which the announcement regarding the next generation machine at the beginning has been planned it made that it does not hold clear.

We had assumed that SCE at the beginning announces the summary of the next generation machine in March, with the world's largest game show "E3" which in May is opened in the United States announces the substance. As for the SCE public information section, "when concert is opened frequently, because it means to force burden to the authorized personnel of the game software manufacturer and the like, as for concert it does not do in March", that you expressed. Simply, whether or not "the concert regarding the summary of the next generation machine becomes the discontinuance, at present time it is undecided. Of manner of optimum announcement is devised ", that you say. On the one hand, "lag has not appeared in the next generation machine development. ' E3 ' with directing to the next generation.

I doubt that a company that just appointed an American as CEO and runs most of its businesses out of the US is still going to have a problem showing a product outside Japan.

That having been said, I wouldn't be so sure that they will have their act together by E3, either in terms of design or final specs.

I was looking forward to this. :(

Will there by ANY next-gen news before E3? Yeah there'll probably be leaks a weak or two before, but what about april? I mean at least microsoft has to reveal something. Their console is supposed to be out 6 months after E3!

This got me thinking...what won't be ready? The hardware? Or some tech demos?

Or, maybe it's a tactical move (as Razoric mentioned, the PSP, and as others mentioned, competing hardware) and this is just some blanket excuse for not showing it.

isn't he a brit?

Maybe they simply don't want to unveil it before the other platforms: this would give MS and Nintendo one month of time to adjust their presentations for countering PS3's specs....

I'd say it's a smart move. Everything will be unveiled ad E3.

Oh, what have I been repeatedly telling you, rumourmongers? No PS3 announcement before the public Xenon unveiling.

ho ho hoooo!! Business is about to pick up!

Any March plan would've been dropped a long time ago. The premiere would be set for around E3, and that'll be the typical concept type presentation with which Sony leads, working ahead of schedule.

-random sony exec: "Kutaragi samaaaaa, we lost the lawsuit against immersion for the dual shock's rumble feature"
-Kutaragi: "So what?"
-sony exec: "Well we have to pay them a license for each unit sold, sir"
-Kutaragi: *turns around to look at PS3 prototype*
-Kutaragi: "Shit, we're fucked, cancel the premiere folks, we cant show dual shock 3"

10$ that really happened :)

I'll take your ten dollars now :P

It's more likely Sony PR will have two sets of press material - one featuring PS3 with 256MB of RAM, one featuring PS3 with 512MB of RAM. MS goes first at E3, right? So just after MS wraps up their conference, Sony starts distributing the appropriate set of press material depending on MS's announcement, and burns the rest ;)

A little more seriously, but somewhat on the same point, Sony and MS are still just playing cat and mouse. Oh well, it HAS to end at E3. For MS anyway.

Hopefully this means we might have more "game-type" demos for PS3 since they'll have more time now (even if not playable). Though I do expect the more abstract "academic" tech demos too, just to wow the unsuspecting.

Type "one trillion divided by one billion" in google. It'll tell you that a trillion is equal to one thousand billion dollars.

Times are different. Wasn't final PSP design first revealed to public at E3? Not to mention they have EU/US CEO now.

Just to elaborate a little - the article seems to say that the reason behind no March showing is that it'd place too much of a burden on game developers? i.e. that the game demos, perhaps, aren't ready?

heh, that was awesome :lol

It's interesting that there was even a news release about the cancelling of the March PS3 unvieling event ......... come on E3!!!!!!!!

I believe this all has to do with the recent lawsuit that Sony lost for the 90-some-odd million dollars. Sony is now broke and cannot afford to make a new console.

what is the point of showing PS3 this soon given it's a looong ways away, unfinished and software being displayed would all be doctored anyways? they have nothing to gain really.

this early showing worked for PS2 cause their only next-gen competition was bleeding $$$ (sega). FUD won't work against M$ and the new crew probably realizes they need to get their house in order before revealing all PS3 details. it's not like they don't have one new system that needs serious promoting in 2005 to make headway anyways (PSP)

Playstation 3 Showing Cancelled at Last Minute In Japan

Speculation confirmed as next-gen meeting pulled.

30th Mar 2005

Reuters in Japan has confirmed speculation that the PlayStation 3 was slated to be shown in Japan during last month. However, the long-awaited first glimpse of what Sony Computer Entertainment was working on had to be pulled at the last minute.

SPOnG has known for some time that the PlayStation 3 showing was slated for March 2005, an event that had been pencilled in by SCE since the emergence of the PSP. As the date drew near, various publications ran confirmation or denials about such a meeting. One even edited its story which began as a flat out denial of the event to read absolute confirmation. Both quoted high-ranking Sony insiders. Go figure…

Anyway, according to Reuters, the simple explanation for the decision not to show PlayStation 3 last month is that there wasn’t any software to show and the device just wasn’t ready. Sony also sought to reassure the world’s press that there is no problem with the PlayStation 3 program. “There has been no delays (sic) with our next-generation console”, went the company statement. “We are now preparing for our showing at E3.”

However, there is some speculation that E3 will not see a full hardware showing as has been indicated by SCEI’s press office. Sony’s showing of the PSP at E3 caused shockwaves in Japan and was seen as something of a snub, especially in the Japanese specialist press. Some analysts consider it unlikely that this situation will arise again, with a pre-E3 conference in the East mooted as a possible debut for the hardware design.

As ever, we’ll keep you updated on this and all things next-generation, as they break. Let us know what you think here.

A) "The Device" as in, something that could be shown, certainly would be ready (even if not final) and B) the comment re. software suggests none is in existance. It'd be slightly more correct to say that software demos weren't ready, not that there is none.

1. past history

Precedent doesn't suggest software would be doctored.

Developers can still come up with something "wow-worthy" with early tools. It doesn't have to be a full, playable game. "Just" something that looks nice..

Playstation3 Not Before E3

30/03/2005
By: Chris Leyton

Japanese reports suggest that the planned March debut is no longer on the cards...

Originally intending to unveil the Playstation3 to the world before an eager gaming audience at E3 in May 2005, Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) has recently informed Reuters that this is no longer the case.

The decision to introduce the Playstation3 before the end of the current financial year stems back as far as July 2004, and with little explanation given to Reuters it’s currently unknown exactly why Sony’s plans have changed.

SCE did seem quick however to refute claims that the development and manufacturing of the Playstation3 isn’t going to plan, proclaiming that the anticipated format will definitely make an appearance at E3.
