PS4 can't play MP3, Music Unlimited needed for background music [Up:Yoshida responds]

I don't know, really. This doesn't seem like a feature I would ever use. Like if I'm playing an atmospheric game like Last of Us, why would I want my own music blaring in the background? Or if I want to hear my own music when playing something less immersive (ie: Call of Duty) I could always just turn on my own stereo...

Yea I really don't see why people are so pissed. This is getting to xbox one 24 hour online checks level of bitching. The no external hard drive thing sucks for sure. But I'm not about to cancel my preorder over not being able to play mp3s while gaming. Who does that so much that its a make or break feature?

What the crap ball!? Is the no videos actually confirmed? Is the lack of external storage support in Xbone confirmed as well?

Might as well just stick with PS3 for the next year.

External storage isn't supported on the XB1 at launch, but will be coming in a later update.

I've never used it and don't even know what the fuck DNLA is but there's enough people whose opinions I respect pissed off in this thread to know that it's a big deal

Turns console into a server. Allowed my PS3 to play my home video as well as my music stored on my computer on my TV that's in a different room and connected to my stereo.

@yosp doesn't have to say anything and people love him. he clearly didn't fix the problem all he did was acknowledge the cries and people are rejoicing in his name

Yep. Major's answer was better. He actually said he's going to go get answers. If he never returns with answers, than his response will be as bad as Yosh's.

I don't use music to play over games that much, but it's a nice feature to have, and making it a subscription service is just silly. Not interested in any music on that limited service either.

Well out of order. My PS3 is currently the only thing I have to play my music as I stream it all from my NAS. My PS3 was going to retire to my bedroom but now I need to keep it in the living room so I can still listen to my music.

Really not happy.

I just find it incredible they do this to themselves in 2013.

When Sony Online Entertainment went from being owned by Sony Pictures to SCEA, they were SOOO happy. It fixed a lot of budget and access issues. They were essentially treated like a 3rd-party before that.

every sony device since post ps3 Launch has the ability to play avchd/arw from usb (like NEX cameras) ... I highly doubt that this feature will be dropped, otherwise it would mean you could not connect your beloved sony multimedia devices via usb to playback you pictures/videos/Audio to a newer playback device (Ps4)

makes no sense at all

my bet features will be added in the future, as usual

This is nuts. A major bummer for me. people saying Sony aren't this dumb....they are, seeing as they already did it. They'll reverse it (hopefully) but they still did it in the first place.

What do you expect him to do? People are happy because it's far better than the marketing talk that MS has been shooting out.
"Future consideration" is marketing speak.

Have people never heard that before? I've seen that used all my life by those in the spotlight to handwave problems away.

Can we play videos from a USB stick or external HDD? If so what formats? If not FIX THIS SH#T @yosp.

I seriously don't see it the need for it.
If you aren't a "pirate" and have ripped your vids they are mostly 4GB+ and won't play on any ones TV/BR player, they don't support anything that big -.- highly doubt the XBO or PS4 will support that if it's not downloaded from their respective stores. They want $$$

What is this 1999? When will Sony learn that forcing proprietary music formats on people just doesn't work?

MP3 is a licensed format.

But then again I'm pretty sure this will be fixed for both machines in the future....I hope...probably...

Why don't you send a tweet to Julie Larson-Green and see if you get a response? Or for that matter the head of just about any division of a major corporation...The fact that he is accessible should be applauded even if the response isn't what people want to hear.

It makes sense if they expect you to buy their subscription which as revenue source in comparison to upgrading to a new playback device which in itself is not unless your weren't going to buy a ps4 without that functionality.

We gotta get him to tell the dev team to implement exporting captured video to external drives now. That shit needs to be accessible for editing.
isn't it in a future update?
Can users copy the recorded gameplay video from PS4 to other devices, such as PC?
PS4 users will not be able to directly copy recorded gameplay video files from PS4 to other devices, though they will be able to use the DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s Share button to upload videos to Facebook for distribution. This function will be supported by a future system update.

Look at those Xbones overblowing MP3 issue on PS4. lol

Bitching about MP3 on PS4, and forgetting that X1 can't handle full-hd without compromises !! hell even COD X1/360 will be near identical at a pathetic 720p.

I'm using Universal Media Server to stream from my PC to my PS3, and although it would be nice to have DLNA support on the PS4, I don't think it is a deal breaker. DLNA support was only added in version 1.8 of the PS3 firmware anyway. After @yosp's tweet, there's a chance that DLNA support will be added in the near future.

Its not his job to fix this problem. His job is to be the boss of all Sony 1st party studios and relations with the 2nd party teams. He is not involved directly with Sony hardware division that is responsible for PS4 design and OS work.

We can be all extremely happy that he has such an awesome approach to the community interactions, responding directly to the fans without PR bullshit. Sure PS4 OS has some things missing, but neither of those things will endager playing games on day 1.

Why dont people scream at MS for forcing Xbone Music app to be active only in the Snap mode, downsizing gameplay to smaller window and automatically lowering the sound of the game? That kind of setup for me is so gaming-unfriendly that I have no words to describe it accurately.

Someone needs to make a spreadsheet of which console has which feature because I am very confused right now with what is rumor and what is real

Ryse looks pretty fucking good to me with compromises

no mp3s is pathetic. So you have to pay to play online now and then subscribe to a music service on top of that. They are making it really easy for me to stick with PC for most of my gaming purchases.

I seriously doubt that they went as far as not having an MP3 decoder, arguably for that specific reason. More than likely, as has been pointed out, they don't have a music player on the system to play the files, not that they are literally incapable of playing them.

Basically this. With the launch deadline and praised games focus I'm starting to think that they are still working on the standalone media player and don't really want to say yes to anything yet.

We already have answers on the PS side. It doesn't play MP3s and it doesn't support DNLA at launch. It's the XB1 that we still don't have answers for.

I already pay $25 a year for iTunes Match, I'm not paying an additional $50 for Music Unlimited to listen to music in the background on my PS4.

Good thing I have AirPlay and external speakers.

so you can't stream music/videos from pc to ps4? If true, I don' t believe it for one second. It can't be!
I'm talking about on the OS level not during in-game.

After Shu's response I'm pretty confident that they will have a firmware update (post-launch) that will enable mp3 playback. He doesn't seem too worried but his aware that Sony fans are unhappy by this!

Pretty much, I'm not sure what kind of response people would have anticipated. We know how it's designed to work. There's no question to answer.

Hmm I hope your right. When i first read that I assumed the Facebook part was going to be patched. Now that I see it again I'm hopeful.

another part of the faq says that facebook uploading is available at launch, so they are saying the copying part will be in a future update. they just worded it really horribly.

I don't. Sony's overall corporate culture hasn't really changed all that much since then. The top management has changed which is why these poor decisions don't stick like they used to, but the middle management is essentially the same, usually it's the same stupid people.

Have to laugh at the irony in this.

Consumer - We want a gaming machine, not that other media box thing.

Sony - Ok, here you go.

Consumer - What the fuck Sony, why is it not a media center?

Sony - *scratches head*

At least Shu didn't pretend he doesn't know anything about it. There's absolutely no way Hryb doesn't know everything about the Xbone's basic media functionality.

Jesus. Both companies are being idiots about this.

It's definitely a weird oversight. I'm not sure what it accomplishes. The only reason I can think of is that they're concerned about the game recording/streaming features bringing copyright issues into play. If it is indeed true the Xbox One doesn't support this either then that would pretty much confirm this theory. A possible workaround would be to allow DLNA and music playback in the OS but then disable it in a game. Its not a big deal for me but I'm sure it gets some people upset they can't use a custom soundtrack.
