PS4 System Software Preview – USB Music Player, New Home Screen Colors, More

I assume that, due to the vast numbers of people who bitched about the regular PS3 firmware updates, Sony decided to listen to the people and so dramatically scaled back on the resources allocated to firmware updates.

Unfortunately, the people are dumb :(

Scaled back? That would imply things were better before.

I assume it's because, unlike MS, they don't have an army of OS developers.

Funny thing is that some people who had a PS3 were really angry about Sony's regular OFW's and OS updates. MS updated OS every 4-5 months for X360 and everybody were happy. Now is the opposite and people are pissed at Sony.

This has been rehashed repeatedly already in this thread and elsewhere, but the situations are not comparable. People complained about the PS3 updates because they had no user-facing benefits, and you had sit through the download and install process seemingly every time you used your PS3 (for those of us that did not use it regularly). Neither is the case with the frequent xbox updates -- the benefits are clear to users, and the updates install while the system is in standby

It didn't help that Sony put the fix behind the PS+ paywall either (no longer the case w/ PS4)

I wonder if they are going to update the web browser to something that is a bit smoother to use. I don't own a PS3, but surely even PS3 had a better browser than this slow piece of shit.

Yes, you're right in one hand. But still....

There were quite a lot of user facing benefits early on link, but people love to complain about Sony.

Isn't the bolded a recent addition though?

I know it's not listed but it would be great if it supported m3u for streaming radio. I honestly don't listen to many of my mp3s anymore. I pretty much just use streaming radio/services and sony's unlimited music thing sucks.

Now bungie just needs to add an option to control music volume in destiny and I'll be good.

I'm happy with any update, also improving stability. I believe HW engineers know better when to update than a bunch of teenagers on the Internet, by a mile. Also I don't give a damn if you switch on your console once a year. It's your problem.

Really? Cause my Xperia phone and PS4 UI says different
Xperia UI is little more than the stock android UI. It's not like you can really mess that up. There is A LOT wrong with the PS4 UI like having to navigate a seemingly infinite horizontal row of games and apps with no logical organization.

For the most recent few items, probably encompassing the last few times you've used the system, sure. But who the hell remembers or cares about what order they used things in last week?
Yeah they need to offer more view options. Their 2013 TV interface that the PS4 interface is based off of lets you turn off the Ad bar & the History bar (recently used tiles), hide apps from the app bar, move around the tiles in the app bar to your liking, and places the TV menu version of the Library as the first tile in the app area instead of the last.

It's just baffling that on their 2nd iteration of the horizontal tile interface they dumped the flexibility that makes it work on their TV's. Had they offered options similar to the TV interface I think most of my issues with the UI would have never popped up. Let me remove the Sony ad tiles from the tile bar (Music/Video Unlimited, Playroom, TV apps, etc...), give me multiple organization options for the tile bar (recently used, alphabetical, custom), let me hide tiles when using the custom tile bar view, and let me organize tiles in my desired position when using custom view. Pair that up with the upcoming Library sort/filter options and all my UI complaints evaporate.

But you don't need to remember.

Whatever you've used very recently will be on your screen, anything recent requires less scrolling across than something last used 6 months ago.

You're making it out to be harder than it is.

Please stop repeating this, its a completley false comparison. MS frequency of updates deliver tangible change, its good and welcomed. PS3 updates were essentially invisible stability updates and were frequent, it was an annoyance. Absolutely different.

Yes, you're right in one hand. But still....

But still what ? Did Sony PS3 updates warrant a YouTube video showing changes ? If not then these are not the same at all.

I'm not implying anything, I'm categorically stating it. The PS3 firmware updates were frequent and brilliant. Obviously they petered off a bit towards the end once they'd implemented all of the cool stuff, but that goes without saying. I don't know if you bought a PS3 in the early days but the changes Sony brought to it through the firmware updates were massive.

The first point is false, because the complaints flooded in even during the early days when the additions with each firmware update were massive. And to the second point, I guess those people must really be enjoying the approach Sony has taken with the PS4. They got their way.

PS3 before in game XMB was pretty brutal

What has the development team being in Japan got to do with anything? Assuming they have a prioritised list of features that need to be worked on, the problem is much more likely to be

- prioritised list doesn't accurately reflect what gamers want (problem with the product guys not the developers)

- not enough OS developers meaning slow updates. Problem with resourcing, not developers

- OS is complicated to update because it isn't isolated from the rest of the system like the Xbox appears to be. System architecture problem, not a problem with the developers.

Can we stop blaming 'developers are in Japan' as being anything to do with this? It is perfectly possible for someone in SCEA/SCEE to communicate clearly what is needed. The question is who owns it, not who is coding it.

Add to that possibly:
Poor communication between marketing/social and SCEJA
Language barriers (linked to above)
Poor management of firmware team
Low prioritisation of firmware updates
Playstation just not giving as much of a shit about updates as Xbox (linked to above)

It's not a problem. Embedded system allows to use more hardware resources for games. You bought a gaming console, use it for games. You want a media player, buy something else.

I'm with you on appreciating any improvements to the OS that updates bring. However, the only reason stability updates exist is to fix things from the previous update. So they really shouldn't be cheered. The Xbox doesn't get stability updates. They almost always get it right the first time.

In 2014 we've already had 5 stability updates.

People are OK with updates if they actually add useful features. Stability updates are not useful features. Printer functionality is not a useful feature. The biggest reason for the complaints with PS3 updates was because you couldn't use the console while it was updating. THAT has been fixed with the PS4, and yes, people are grateful for that. They're not happy getting less useful updates.

It's convenient if your friend wants to demo a game with a ton of input lag added.

I don't say that trying to be a dick, it's just the truth. There is no way to stream a game and not have a noticeable amount of input lag. The further you are from that person the worse it's gonna be.

Even with some input lag, your friend will be in a better position to make an informed purchasing decision by being able to actually play it, rather than relying on word of mouth or website reviews.

Yeah this thing is super late.

I think the magic number is something like 2-3 major feature updates per year.

People don't mind more frequent updates if they are actually improving something tangible about the system. It was the way the PS3 patched, and the frequency of "stability" updates (i.e. do nothing for the user really), that pissed people off.

Yes Sony is the victim

ppl were complaining about the frequency of MEANINGLESS updates. Stability updates every month. Actual feature updates were 2-3 times a year. All of MS updates were significant to the experience and not just bug fixes.

People were upset that the are constantly interrupted by updates that does nothing for the end user.

Anyone else noticed that the online web store has received a significant upgrade?

Loading screens are different and much faster, and you can actually check the progress of your remote downloads after setting them to go. It lets you know when it's ready to play.

...so now I know I can play Escape Goat 2 when I get home :p

i knew of the other stuff (new loading screen, name chnage, icon change, snappier) but not this one :O

might have to check this out.

i would like to know what is going on at Sony HQ. If the issue was updating all the time (even though now on the ps4 we can update in background) why not do the update 3 times a year which major features in each update?

We need to stop making excuses for sony. yes sony is not a software company but i am sure they can give us the little things like media, dlna, folder, pausing downloads and suspend/resume (already on vita and announced during ps4 announcement). No excuses should be made for sony

I didn't see a download bar (I'm also assuming that Escape Goat 2 is super tiny, so who knows), but it does let you know once it's done downloading and ready to play for sure :)

if it didn't happen today then it will happen next tuesday/wednesday. of course im going on their quote of "biggest games of the year" and CoD qualifies as one of those.

Didn´t they release the first part of the patch notes last wednesday ?

I was expecting the next (or final) part today if the update should drop next week.

yup last Thursday. but I don't expect anymore preview info, I think they'll release the full patch notes when the update drops.

Yup. I would have thought the benefits would be pretty obvious to everyone. Shareplay will be a game changer.. mark my words.
