PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

If they continue to support the gimpier PS4 then what's the issue? You don't have to upgrade just like any other product line.

It will probably be like playing on a low end PC vs playing on a mid-tier PC. The same game will work on both systems but run and look a little better on the high end PS4. As a PC owner I am used with this and this does not bother me as long as devs optimize their games properly for the "old" PS4.

I'm trying to read through all of this information but where is it guaranteed that this is actually happening? This would be a sick April 1st joke.

Ugh.

Game should be made for PS4 with PS4K being the superior version, not the PS4 version being the inferior version with games made for PS4K.

I'm out of consoles if this is the case. Why not build a PC.

Sighs it is almost like punishing your customers for adopting. I could see a smaller system like they usually do, but an actual upgrade? Man I hoped Nintendo was only one doing this with handhelds.

I guess developers have three options with supporting their old games now.

- issue updates to existing games to take advantage of the new hardware.
- do nothing
- make remasters of past PS4 games and resell them

Fucking disrespect! Shame on you Sony! There are almost 40 millions owners out in the wild, so please hold this fucking shit to release in 4 years at least.

I just can't believe there are people who support this nonsense.
From what I've seen, it's mostly well-off gamers with ample disposable income that support this thing. Which isn't likely a majority of the market.

The generational model is outdated and needs to be replaced at some point with this exact idea. Might as well do it now!

I'm not sure I agree with this. Doing that brings in the problems of the target platform that the PC and mobile phones have. There's a very clear jump in visual fidelity in games once a new generation hits despite the PC having far superior GPUs and that's because there's a new target baseline to follow since everyone is on the same page at that point. Removing the generation lines now makes that a moving target that's harder to hit.

Guess i'l just go back to playing multiplats on pc. Games are still going to look better on pc so i'd rather drop 400 dollars on a new gpu vs a ps4.5

I still don't understand the meltdowns, this is a positive change.

Almost every AAA release in the recent past has been met with concerns about performance in current consoles.

We can't complain about console performance (sub 1080p, sub 30 fps, fps drops) and at the same time denounce new hardware which would allow games to run closer to PC spec.

I understand that money is an issue for some, but nothing will change for you.. you will still be able to run the same games, albeit at a lower spec (which we would be getting anyway with the status quo).

Exactly. The meltdowns on here address hilarious.

I've had zero issues with the performance and look of a single console game that has come out this gen and I have preferred console gaming my whole life but if this shit ends up happening I will switch to strictly PC gaming. I don't want to buy a $650 console every 3 years when I could spend that on PC components that will last me much longer and run games much better.

If this was coming out a couple of years from now, maybe 2018-2019 I would be ok with it but I think beginning of next year is just too early for hardware revision. If they were planning this for PSVR they should've thought ahead and future proofed the Ps4.

Bad form Sony, and you were doing so well this gen. I guarantee this will split your userbase as it alienates customers with the lesser powered hardware.

Something on the scale of Destiny?

Another poster mentioned how optimizing for each system would require more man hours. I would guess a game like Destiny would require less effort than most due to the artistic approach they took. Destiny 2 may change that though, assuming it won't be released on last-gen consoles as well.

Wollan's back? Time to update this image:

BRUH! LOL!!!! Good times.

I completely understand their decision to release a new, more powerful console. What I find shitty (if it turns out that way) is getting shitty, poorly looking/performing ports from the PS4K.

This is bullshit. Consoles don't even acquire a worthwhile catalog in 3 years. The first year or two is all up-rezed cross-gen bullshit. Year 3 and beyond is when they really start to bloom.

Basically this. The PS4 ran on hype from the E3 reveal until Bloodborne, and not much else.

Are there any concrete facts, evidence on this console right now? I am simply guessing based on TDP, heat, price, and performance requirements to hit 4k. It may be far fetched but several months ago a mid cycle console refresh was a joke but here we are.

A PS4 with 2x GPU/CPU performance isn't going to natively render anything at 4K except for maybe the occasional indie title.

Exactly! This is an opportunity to close the gap if you don't want to build a PC.

The gap is only gonna get wider with the new cards coming later this year.

Then why not wait another two years after the PS4k release & get a PS5 for the same price?

If you're this on board with incremental upgrades every 3 years, you should've been on the PC since last decade.

Except I never implied that? If you're on board with spending that much money that often on gaming hardware, you should be on PC, plain and simple. You're gonna have a lot more control and a much better time with the games you play. It's not about having the money vs. not having the money. A few hundred every couple of years doesn't really wreck most people's budgets. The real point of contention is the COMBINATION of factors. Not just "spend money every 3 years", but "spend money every 3 years" + "get an incremental upgrade out of it" + "with the purpose of playing the latest and greatest in terms of tech". That's the kind of experience for PC gaming and you get much better bang for your buck anyway.

If this is true, the PS4 platform is starting to quack like a PC and walk like a PC, but it isn't a PC. For the benefit of the consumer, if the console quacking like PC and walking like one sounds really THAT interesting to you, you really should just go for a PC. Maybe you have the willingness and budget for one and never even knew it.

Why do PC people assume that everyone wants to play on a PC?

My goodness. I'm not thrilled about this. I hope TLG isn't one of the default 4K games.

Gah. I really do not want Sony to destroy their goodwill and seviide their fanbase. I don't think that's good for the industry. It's too soon for a new gen. My concern is that this is what it would be like if all 3DS games that game our after N3DS launched had similar problems as Hyrule Warriors Legends does.

I also think this is far too early in the 4ak adoption market for this to be happening. I'm concerned devs will primarily shoot for 4K and the majority of PS4 owners will have the older model and get left in the dust.

(It sounds like this is all happening this year, right?)

Ah, I see now it's q1 17. Hope TLG is this year and unaffected.

I think it is funny that those hate this idea because there will be PS4 owners getting a lower end version of the game and the PS4K folks getting a better version of games and then these same people say "Fuck Sony", "I am going PC". Well would it not be the same thing on PC? If you go PC, there will be PC players playing the same game with better resolution, better shadows, better frame rate, better AA solutions, unless all these people going PC will be building Titan X Rigs, which I doubt.
