PS5 shipments top 77.8 million

People that are driving sales the most are FIFA/FC, COD, Fortnite etc. crowd. They are happy with whatever dogshit content for their favorite games drop.

You are on a hardcore gaming forum, people here want the best gaming has to offer and Sony was one of the top publishers before...

"Sony Shot Themselves In The Foot"

At no point was anyone talking about shipped... All numbers reported are sold through numbers.
Sony only reports sell-in numbers through its quarterly annoucements, it's always been like this.
That one chart with a lot of random dates, including the aforementioned 12/31/17 one? Those are for the occasional sell-through numbers Sony happened to announce, and the last time we got those for PS5 are for >56M sell-through units as of April 30, 2024.

That's incorrect and something that has been debunked for literally over a decade... It says it right there on the table for the quarterlies.

You know we reached top comedy when we're getting to screenshots of *that* thread once again.

You hate this poll because you can't explain the results. Green rats can't be blamed here (they don't have numbers), this poll shows that majority of Sony FANS (not fanboys) are disappointed with what they are doing this gen.

Meanwhile, Switch surpassed PS2 in terms of American console sales giving Nintendo both the number 1 and number 2 spots.
PS2 being beaten by Switch at a global level for the title of "World's Best Selling Console" has the potential to be a point of no return for PlayStation.
Sony needs to maintain their position at the top because coming back from a defeat like that will be far more difficult.
Gaming is a significantly bigger market nowadays than when the PS2 released.

This comparison always misses that context.

The GAF itself is a tiny bubble and while I enjoy it, it is important to always remember that for the reality check.

Most normal people don't even play on PC and not planning to exchange their Macbooks for yet another overpriced or underwhelming GPU with supply issues or CPU with firmware issues. PS5 is a platform of choice by deafult for many gamers and they could care less where their favorite games like DS2 or EA FC came from. And it's an absolutley healthy way to look at things.

Microsoft must really want out of the hardware console business. They look like a sports team that is purposefully tanking to get a higher draft pick.
They probably took the opportunity and removed their entire HW subsidy if I had to guess.

If I'm right, then if tariffs hit then we might be in for a further price hike there too. They have the least options out of all the console manufacturers.

PS2, DS, Switch.

The PS5 numbers here certainly aren't bad though, just not as great as I thought they'd be. Early word was PS5 was tracking PS2/Switch numbers, but on this trajectory it might hit 120M lifetime at best.
120M would be Sony's 2nd biggest console ever and the 4th biggest console in history. I don't know how that's bad, specially when prices keep going up

I already said something like that in my first post:

People that are driving sales the most are FIFA/FC, COD, Fortnite etc. crowd. They are happy with whatever dogshit content for their favorite games drop.

They really don't have much choice, do they? PC is too complicated (or overpriced) and Xbox is dead. Nintendo is... something else.

Sales =/= quality.

Many things that are bad or mediocre sell well. For example no one can explain why dogshit GPU like 4060 (worse than 3060) sold so much, yet people are buying it. Taylor Swift is the most streamed artist etc.

PS2 got to $99, Switch has the equivalent at $199 in today's dollars. PS5 is still $450 at the cheapest and who knows what it will end at but I doubt prices drop much if at all.

That poll doesn't has face control so we don't know whether it's Sony fans or some else platforms fans driving results

The $199 Switch Lite is a castrated niche product that doesn't even run all games
This isn't true, it runs every single Switch game

it's sold more units than every Xbox Series and PC handheld put together. It's the least popular option of a mass market device but it is decidedly not "niche"

Did Microsoft publish their projections for the Xbox brand with figures ? Or just clouds/suns/storms and participation prices as they always do ?
Microsoft doesn't publish profit results or expectations for any of its segments
That's incorrect and something that has been debunked for literally over a decade... It says it right there on the table for the quarterlies.
Luminoth-4545's source is sell-in. The source you linked to is sell-through.
Wii was, bit I'd say PS4, PS5 and Switch did as well
PS2, DS, Switch.

It's still tracking ahead of PS2 I believe. So if PS2 was great then PS5 is also great.

What a load of bullshit. A similar poll last gen would have obtained the same results, people would have voted the PS4 gen the worst up until early 2018. No way it wouldn't against full gens from PS2 and even PS3. And you would say people felt disappointed with their PS4s? ( up to 4 years in?) Not even you believe your own nonsense.

PS4 was worse gen for Sony exclusives than PS3. And now PS5 is worse than PS4. We have 2 to 3 years left of this gen, what games will Sony release when making one game = 5-8 years?

PS3 is high on the list because people voted for it as overall worst Sony console - this is partialy right because multiplatform games performed poorly. Author of first post meant Sony games.

His "source" is the exact same data I was linking to... Sony...
It's both from Sony, but his source is: "Worldwide PlayStation®4 Hardware Unit Sales (Sell-in / Unit: millions)"

Whereas you were linking to a table on page 8 of that report which is "Number of cumulative sell-through units (million)"

Why would you leave money on the table like that? The future is scalable games that can be played anywhere to maximize the amount of players.
Because people want to see a cod that looks different than what they can play in their mobile phones… :messenger_grinning:

Think Mad Men GIF

It's a combination of several factors; recency bias, general downer attitud of a small, narrowed taste bubble. Why do you think it's funny that this picture is somehow used as a argument? You bring up "hurr durr people are buying it for FIFA and GTA alone!!" as it that's somehow a gotcha when compared to previous PlayStation consoles, which were ALWAYS third-party driven.
Sony's first-party efforts are selling better today that in past generations, I can easily use that as a counterargument against the claim of people not being content with first-party offerings, because actual data shows that the overall market sentiments among those is certainly better than ever (AND without heavy discounts at that).

Probably more accurate to say "PS5 owners," rather than "Sony FANS." A lot of console gamers who choose PS5 are doing so simply because it seems to them the better choice, compared to Xbox. That doesn't mean they are "fans" of Sony. I own a PS5, and I'm not a fan of Sony. I'm just less a fan of MS.

Also,

- Recency bias will predispose people to think about Sony's recent difficulties and forget the ones in the past
- PC is a heavier favorite on GAF than PS5. There are also some people who prefer Nintendo or Xbox. We really can't say whether the respondents ticking PS5 in that poll even own the PS5, much less are fans of it.

We will see, won't we? Still, may be "weakest", but not poor or disappointing by any standards. You just think every gen has to reach the same highs for YOU. I bet you don't even care much for many of the great 1st party games already released. What do you even game, bro? Honest question. Have you played all Sony 1P PS5 games? How do you rate them?

The poll doesn't really prove that Sony is having a bad generation. The question was which PlayStation gen of the 5 is the worst. Being the worst of 5 good generations doesn't make it a bad generation. The actual sales numbers show that this is a good generation for Sony. The best actually. The poll just reflects the subjective feelings of this particular forum and nothing else.

Not out of the box, you have to invest another 80 Euro for some of them to work. Also Nintendo Labo is a problem, because accessoires like VR Goggles won't fit.

Xbox sales have nothing to do with this, with only ~15% it's as niche as a PS5 Pro to me. If you think it's not niche, good for you.

Games that require split joy cons do require you to purchase those separately before they will run on the Lite, but:

a) There are under 20 games (out of 15,000) that require this, which is a fraction of a fraction of the total library, and
b) If we are using the purchase of additional accessories to run some games as a disqualifying factor, no Switch model runs every single game in the library out of the box. There are several that require additional accessory or hardware purchases before they will run (though again, a tiny fraction of a fraction of the library)

If you mean it is the most niche Switch offering, I definitely agree! But in a broader sense, it is very much a mass market device, with mainstream pricing and dozens of millions of units of sales sold. But I do understand your larger point on this.

Yes, i mean niche in the Nintendo universe, not the whole gaming universe.
