I stand corrected I was looking at sell-through, you're correct.

Very strong results, they have beaten their own forecast 18.5m vs 18m which I thought was really ambitious to reach without price cuts and a 700$/800€ Pro.
Their profitability is also through the roof, PS5 is generating far more profits than PS4 thanks to subscriptions and gaas stuff.
The 15m forecast for the next FY is also pretty good considering they said they factored the GTA6 delay in it and price cuts are really unlikely due to tariffs (there could be price hikes in the US).

PlayStation's most successful failure?

I mean, I haven't had a reason to touch my PS5 in over a year. I have nothing to look forward to for it, either.

I'm not complaining, just don't know what's going on for any of the consoles (besides Nintendo) to sell this much.

We're screwed, if they can sell this much knowing that they've been offering mediocrity the entire gen then we're going to be in for a hell of ride come PS6 generation.

Give it a rest 😆

I remember you didn't think they would reach the 18 million forecast.

15-16M on lock!

Switch benefited from being able to remaster Wii U games to pad it out but they had quite a few dry spells even with regurgitating those games. Their highest selling game is just a Wii U game too. Now they don't have the luxury of remastering old games no one played AND games will take longer to make.

They learned from Nintendo.

Still lots of people playing on home consoles. If you want one PS5 seems to be the main option. After Xbox one generation no reason for the casual gamer to get an Xbox. Playstation is also more of a household name.

Sony PS fans really are loyal and very patient, as in very, very patient with Sony ( well including me) despite of there many blunders in this Ps5 era with that push for live service and gaas, twisted dei and woke infestation, and a few single player 1st and 2nd party exclusives and Japan studio is gone. Sony fans always remains hopeful. Hopefully with DS2 coming up and other big games like Lost Souls, GOY, Phantom blade zero, Wolverine and Saros, and maybe even a possibility of Stellar blade expansion, everything will be great again on Sony's 1st and 2nd party exclusives moving forward before Ps6 possibly launching around Christmas of 2028 or summer of 2029.

The results are very good. I'm really impressed with the increased profitability and working capital improvements. They've managed to reduce AR and inventory while having higher sales.

It looks like increase profitability in gaming is being led by network services (PS+ I assume). I'd be curious to see how much of that is driven by price increases vs higher volume.

Overall, I think Sony has to be very happy where they are. Gaming is really doing well for them. I expect that to grow once they start releasing some of the bigger 1st party content.

On a side note, I find the TV results really sobering. Sales are down about 5% when you take out the FX benefit and are forecasted to be down another 5% next year. I prefer to buy Sony TVs, hope they continue to make premium TVs for a long time. It's been disappointing to see what happened to Panasonic here in the US.

This can't be stated enough. Xbox has effectively nuked their console market at this point, so people still on the One are just moving to PS5. This is a key reason why the platform is doing so well given the lack of exclusives.

Sales =/= quality.

Many things that are bad or mediocre sell well. For example no one can explain why dogshit GPU like 4060 (worse than 3060) sold so much, yet people are buying it. Taylor Swift is the most streamed artist etc.
PS5 is the most sophisticated hardware gaming-oriented platform on the market right now and the best way to play console games on a 4K TV set. We can argue about internal output (quite strong IMO), but this generation of hardware from Sony is exceptional. No serious HW issues, great 2 SKU policy with purchasable drive, great power-to-price ratio, industry standarts used all around from ports to SSD bay and trully innovative controller to boot.

Like it or not, if you're not a PC gamer willing to spend a lot of your time and money, PS5 and PS5 Pro is the best place to play games. Almost any games you want.

Sales reflect the broad market sentiment and taste, a metric way more valuable than some arbitrary, full of yourself standard of 'quality'. You're extremely out of touch if you can't explain why Taylor Swift is so popular.

I know why she is popular. Do you think she makes some great music that is worth all that money she makes?

What if I did? Would my opinion be worth less than yours or anyone else's?
For the record, I think she's just fine, and I also totally see how her music could reasonate with a lot of people, even if that doesn't include me.

She makes popular music but not quality music, same is true for many big game franchises. Quality =/= sales is true for gaming, music, movies etc.

Trash like pokemon, Fortnite, Minecraft etc. Generates millions of dollars.

Fortnite and Minecraft are most definitely quality games, what are we doing here?
Taylor Swift has several critically acclaimed albums on her resume, we need some good receipts to claim that she doesn't make quality music on an objective point of view.

With lots of price cuts to boot. (PS4)
You could get a PS4 for $200 in holiday 2017.
If you think so.
Just like a big majority of the gaming population!
BTW, see the edit of my post (and post #278).

Plus advanced audio, a handheld and VR. We still have people crying about psvita memory cards but the PS5 has open usb ports that allow for legacy amps and headsets to be used as well. It's a well balanced ecosystem.

I won't discuss opinions here. But you have QUALITY game like Elden Ring and then you have quality game like Minecraft.

Fortnite generating billions is the reason why Sony fucked up many studios with gaas projects. Elden Ring selling well has potential to improve gaming quality for everyone.

These games are so different from each other that doing these comparisons is so utterly pointless, and bringing up external factors out of their control is not an argument.
Also, let's be quite honest, Sony's GAAS initiative was mostly from new or MP dedicated studios and people still loathed the idea.

The only issue with gaas should be with taking established studios that make great single player games and wasting their time and resources. Rolling the dice on gaas is necessary because hitting on one or two brings in massive dollars. You don't have to like it to appreciate it's value. Same for me with the Horizon franchise. I don't love it but it sells. That money coming in helps the brand. Just don't spread the other areas too thin and I'm good.

Pretty much spot on. I haven't been a fan of Sony's (pithy) 1st party output for quite some time but you cannot deny the quality of the console itself and the way they have marketed this thing. To sell as well as it has during the covid period where you could not find a console in store for around 2 years is a phenomenal effort.

Again, you can objectively say it's the "worst" but that doesn't mean it's bad, only others were better. You bought a Pro recently, and you primarily game on PC.
Wait wait, the guy thats been downplaying the system since announcement ended up buying one? This needs a new thread itself.

Dude is literally in every PS thread screaming and shouting. Really weird because for everything else he comes across as a reasonable poster.

It's just the sight of Totoki that brings out the PTSD I guess.

Gaming is a significantly bigger market nowadays than when the PS2 released.
This comparison always misses that context.
The market is much smaller because it's saturated with all of the best EOL consoles from PlayStation and Nintendo.
EOL game consoles float around keeping people busy and taking would-be users out of modern console ecosystems.
I.e., Someone born in 2000 that's never had a PS2 learns about GTA from a GTA6 ad.
ALL of the PlayStation consoles being "new" to them means that they can get a used PS2 for $100 with all 3 GTAs and put off buying a PS5 for years.
Lots of PS2s are still being used regularly along with all of the PS3s, SNESs, N64s, GCs, Wiis, and all of the GameBoy variants.
Games for these consoles are either free or less expensive than new games which are often remakes/remasters.
Silent Hill 2 remake for PS4/5 was ~$70 while the PS2 game is free for download on archive.org.
Switch sells expensive 'new' games that are just remakes of games that can be obtained online for free and used on old consoles or emulated on consoles or PC.
