PSBlog: New in-game content incentives coming to PlayStation games on PC (PSN account linking becomes optional for SM2, GOW:R, HZD:R, TLOU2:R)

I doubt anyone really cares.
Is that so? We have a thread full of people crying over this.

Sony would be stupid not to learn from MS though.
Never cared too much about MS myself but, is it a fact that their demise has anything to do with putting their games on PC? Imo they've made other way bigger mistakes, mostly about mismanagement of their studios.

They are making easy money and the only alienated Sony PS fans are the console-warriors. Everyone else sees this as a win for both sides.
It is not a win on both side. Sony PS image is about exclusives since Ps1 era, that is why it sells. Principles and fan base is being killed. Then there will be no point to own a PS console. Sony is just falling to PC masters race trap and MS trap, which makes Nintendo the only platform with wisdom not to fall to that trap of porting exclusives.

Without finding a better way to get PC players to sign-up to a PSN account en-masse the strategy of PC ports becomes riskier not less. PC is not just about making money from selling games to a VERY cost conscious audience, but services revenue...

Making signup optional and giving additional benefits is not a show of strength.
If you think people on PC would just happily sign up for a PS+ or some other bullshit service, i have bad news.

I remember a few weeks ago someone mentioning you needed PS+ to do something as simple as transfering saves between consoles now, this kind of shit won't fly with the PC audience.

I've been in that thread, but haven't seen people being bothered by it on a personal level. At least not that I noticed.

For MS, it's the sum of many things, but lack of exclusives definitely played a big part in it.

there is a synergy to it. if you have strong first-party content, not only with our console but also other platforms like computers, first-party can be grown with multi platforms and that can help operating profit to improve
I am sorry if I sound rude but your reply seem to skip over like 70% of what I said.

You are missing the point, audience does not necessarily mean money. Look at money spent in apps on Android vs iOS.

PC games tend not to like to spend money on subscriptions to play online (do not have to), they tend to be more price conscious (full price titles day 1... eh...), and the revenue they get from those players per game is only 70% on their own titles and 0% on third party compared to consoles (on top of not having any service revenue).

If players reject PSN accounts they will not flock en-masse to a PlayStation PC Store either... come on...

I disagree. The fact that a game comes to PC or any other platform doesn't make it worse. You'll still get your TLOUs, your God of Wars and your Horizons, and those games will be of the same quality as they were if they were exclusives.

I just don't get the mindset.

I'd say otherwise judging by some 4 meters tall walls of text but let's leave it there. :goog_relieved:

They just had a very bad generation with almost no first-party cool stuff, neither on their own console nor anywhere else. 2025 looks better tho.

Anyway, my point is that not putting their games on PC would have probably made things worse for them.

LOLOL not only is Sony not backing away from PC, they're actually moving in a positive direction. Great fucking news.

A PS store on PC would be worse than Epic Games Store which sucks donkey nut.
Probably would just be a side-hustle for them and the real use case of the store is to offer an all you can eat subscription of their PC games (PS+). Hopefully they would make any PC Store cross-buy and that would be another incentive to use it.

Their image was mostly about third-party exclusives. What games comes to mind when talking about ps1? Tekken, Final Fantasy, Ace Combat, Tomb Raider, Sillent Hill, Resident Evil, MGS. Looking back very few were actually produced by Sony themselves like Gran Turismo.

That era is gone, devs aren't interested in focusing on a single platform anymore, there's no reason to. Sony has to reinvent itself whether you like it or not. They tried covering up the lack of third party exclusives with their own studios but that strategy is also starting to fail since they based their brand's appeal on being top-of-line in terms of graphics and budget, something that becomes harder and harder to achieve over time.

not one sony exec has said anything against pc ports. ALL recent playstation figureheads have public statements in favor of it. the newly-appointed Sony CEO Totoki is the most outspoken:

But on fanbase, image and loyalty and console sales, it will be devastating, this will not be good in the long run. And this statement was last year, and probably base from data and suggestion by west leadership to Sony. Western leadership are like Rasputin, they cannot be trusted anymore. They need new data, new survey and analytics if porting exclusives to pc is really practical or it will affect there console sales and even there plan handheld. Anyway with the reshuffle, and not so good sales of ps exclusives ports to pc, and even FF7 rebirth on PC, the sales is not that big right now, we might see big changes. Well what is happening right now are just remnants of Hulst and retired Jim Ryan past decisions.

Will this porting PS exclusives PC madness ends with the new management shakeup? Sony has to really evaluate everything again, make new survey and analytics if PC really is practical despite the bad sales in Pc, and if its worth it to alienate Sony PS fans and blemish Sony's image as a place for great exclusives.
Keep fapping to that hope - maybe it will happen! :messenger_bicep:

The ballooning of game budgets has nothing to do with graphics fidelity. It's all organizational inefficiency.

There's no upside to it. A PS launcher on PC will only make the PC experience worse. I don't even like that Larian and CDPR put intermediate launchers in front of their games on Steam. Steam is as important to the PC experience as the whole PS5 system UI is to Playstation. There's no getting around it, and publishers should stop trying to get around it. Steam is the platform.

As far as offering PS+ to PC gamers, Steam already provides for 3rd party subscription services like EA Play:

So moving a gass based publisher did not work now they are trying the multi platform route. have they not watched what happened to Xbox after they went multi platform 😂, why not go all out on exclusives and kill off Xbox before going down this road. Oh well it’s gona be end of PlayStation as we know it.

Yeah offer it via both, I use Steam but wouldn't mind a Playstation Store if I instantly owned all my PS5 first party games on PC via that.

That's also doesn't help, but what i mean by "harder" is diminishing returns, it becomes harder and harder to impress people with just graphics and tech as those become better and more commonplace. Even ray-tracing got somewhat of a mixed reception.

Arguably the only one who's still managing to do it is rockstar, and they have godful amounts of budget while releasing one game every decade or so.

If they actually offered both, sure, fine I can ignore it. But it's a waste of development effort. Just integrate with Steam more. You don't need your own app to facilitate cross-buy (assuming they actually want to).

I don't think Sony can compete with Epic Games as a PC application developer, and the existence of EGS makes PC gaming worse even if you don't use it.

It's not as if MS games sold well on Xbox.

Yeah but that has nothing to do with PC, or are you implying otherwise?
We know for a fact that the pipeline has already been compromised for the sake of PC porting from the Insomniac leak.

Even then, it just makes common sense. Developing for multiple SKUs and/or building for retroactive scalability is always spending resources for porting where those resources could be spent elsewhere and holds the game back. We understand this concept when applied to the Series S. We understood it when Todd Howard himself explained the benefits of (temporarily) excluding the PS5 from development of Starfield. We understood it when we all bitched and moaned about the fact that the first wave of major 1st party games were cross gen. The disregard for that when applied to the broad spectrum of PC hardware is laughable.

Nixxes should be bent to the will of being ICE 2.0. Naughty Dog was already wasting enough time on remakes, remasters and a canned MP game, they shouldn't have been committing time to PC ports.

Is it a coincidence that Forbidden West, Spider-Man 2 and Ragnarok were the glitchiest wave of Sony first parties save for Days Gone? I think not.

No, I just think that devs have taken the brute force mentality for mostly last gen looking games.

Even ray-tracing got somewhat of a mixed reception.
Because ray tracing is not inherently a visual enhancement so much as it is a pipeline shortcut that is actually too resource expensive to be called a shortcut.

Arguably the only one who's still managing to do it is rockstar, and they have godful amounts of budget while releasing one game every decade or so.
Naughty Dig has a godlike budget and time to develop games, but Intergalactic barely looks any better than TLOU2. That's not because there's no more room to grow.

That's a lot of assumptions for what, in the end, is just asking another studio like Nixxes to do a port for cheap and rake some easy money.

Again, more assumptions. Maybe they just have worse developers than before or they cheaped out on QA.

Fantastic news. Glad all the people excluded will be able to buy and play Sony games on PC again.
I really do hope Nixxes will be allowed to go back and forward-port to both PC and PS5 some more PS3 and PS4 classics.
Killzone trilogy, Resistance, Driveclub, Order 1886..many games deserve to be preserved.

Not assumptions. Again, it's in the Insomniac leak.

Whatever is "assumed" here is, again, just common sense. Backed up by history, recent and ancient.

Maybe if Sony made more sensible "assumptions" Shuhei Yoshida wouldn't be surprised that Horizon Forbidden West managed to sell less and less than expected with a cross gen version, a PC version, and an early PS+ release.
