PSN Content 09/06/07 (Stranglehold & NBA Live demos, Motorstorm & NG Sigma DLC)

Just played NBA and I would say the graphic is not so good, Sony's NBA game models look better, maybe not the charecter art but the graphic is.

Stranglehold is TERRIBLE!

The slowdown was so bad I thought my PS3 had given up. Seriously, it must've ran at 5FPS at one point.

The gameplay...ugh, the point and click shooting is so meh...the camera is terrible too. How do you centre it behind you? Ugh. I'm deleting this shit.

:jawdrop:

stuck at 66% too. reminds me of the 360 demo.

cutscenes were videos in the 360 version too, and i remember the 360 version mostly running at 30 fps too.

all this is reassuring for a ps360 owner planning on getting the ps3 collectors.

From what I've seen, the games are about the same actually.

Which is shocking, considering what it could have been.

Holy shit is NBA Live '08 ever a jagged mess on my TV. What the hell is up with most third party PS3 games having such poor anti-aliasing?

Edit: Ok I paused the game in the menu shoot around, then went back to it and now it's running at 10 fps max. A pure slideshow. WTF? Was running smooth at one point. Everything else on my PS3 runs fine. Then again this is NBA Live and seeing how much of joke it's been on next-gen so far I'm not suprised. :lol

Just played through the demo. It's definitely as smooth as the 360 demo, overall. There were only a couple of moments where I saw the game stutter, and it was just that, a stutter and not consistently chugging. The only thing that really stood out was the sound effects, as they all sounded muddy, if that makes sense. I can't recall if the 360 demo sounded the same.

Not really a PSN update, but since there's no Mainichi thread, Mainichi Issho got its monthly update:

http://www.dokodemoissyo.com/mainichi/

I haven't played in a while, so I'm not sure, but it looks like:

- New cosplay (like always)
- Walking and Dancing modes at the Myaile shop (Toro will dance to the music you import)
- Zoom Camera at the Myaile shop (can now hold 48 pictures and will do 1920x1080)

The cosplay is bought with real currency. You can get the other things at the Myaile shop by accumulating points through the game.

Are you talking about stranglehold? If so, very early on, the game chugs really badly. So bad that I thought my PS3 was going to crash. I don't know if the 360 experiences this too but its unacceptable. Same to be said for the gameplay. Meh.

I actually got my lazy ass to download the Bladestorm demo, which is actually pretty damn good for a cabbage-slashing sim. Koei's first game I actually enjoy...

I have the 360 stranglehold demo still on my harddrive (still play it regularly)....currently downloading the PS3

...hit up the official thread for some detailed impressions later

....and yes I'm a big graphics whore :lol

I think your PS3 has some issues. Seriously.

Stranglehold is smooth as a baby's bottom for me. The only stutter I had was when I hit a checkpoint and there were gunfights happening.

Weird, sounds like you've definitely got a problem. Do any other games perform like that? My friend is running through the game and much like my experience, hasn't had any glaring problems, especially any related to performance.

Reboot that mug.

sound balance was really off in the 360 demo, like weird things were quiet and loud. that what you're experiencing?

At first Stranglehold just seems like nothing more than Max Payne with the trappings of a John Woo film skinned over top it. But then you start to play around with the environments--be it sliding/running around on stuff or shooting propane tanks (exploding barrels only slicker, leaner, and next gen-er) or objects down on top of the heads of enemies--gaining new abilities, and get to stuff like those bullet dodging mini-games and Stranglehold starts to differentiate itself enough that it simply doesn't feel like a rote experience.

it was pretty damn fun and has me picking through my collection seeing what I could pawn off to get it.

Actually, I got a tiny tiny bit of slowdown on Bladestorm, when I bum-rushed a pack of enemies, but thats it. Its running on a 20GB hdd, so maybe the slow cache speed is the problem.

Slowdown aside, not really impressed with Stranglehold. Doesn't even look pretty.

That's part of it, but all sound effects are muffled, almost like Roseanne it sitting on your face while you're playing.

awesome about the camera update. it means we can take real screenshots now.

Anyone get the MotorStorm content? Which of the cars do you still have to unlock after you buy it? I haven't really played much of the 1 player game so I'm a long way off of getting all the unlockables.

I'm almost done downloading the SH demo! Can't wait to try it out.
It did get stuck on me somewhere in 60% range but I paused it and resumed and it has been downloading fine ever since.

I've taken so many low-res ones already... :(

Hopefully the English lesson episodes will go into the archives, those were great for captions.

wtf happened to fifa demo? someone has to be punished for this! and this was first time i was psyched about fifa game in a decade...

"you have chosen...wisely"

NBA Live runs smooth for the most part on PS3, plays decently, but has a shitload of jaggies.

Stranglehold for some reason the sound is really messed up on my TV, slight aliasing issues (nowhere near as bad as Live), and the framerate took a dump after you come off the first long running rail and ride the cart near the birdcages. Went down to a good 10fps, but smoothed out after all the action was over. Controls feel good.

More Mainichi:

Zoom Camera - 150 points
Dancing Duck - 300 points
Walking Duck - 300 points

I'm not sure what the Walking Duck will do. I only have 650 points, and I want the camera more :(

Edit: Crap! Ignore that camera part. The Zoom Camera is in the real shop and costs 200 yen, and the license only lasts 30 days! :(
There's a 24 hour trial version too for free.

The most striking difference between the PS3 and 360 demo is the sound. It's really bad in the PS3 demo.
Other than that, there are a few other differences. The PS3 version is lighter, which kind of brings out the faults in the games graphics. The graphics don't look any different, but the faults are more noticeable.
And there's sporadic slow down when things get real hectic, but I can remember that happening in the 360 version as well.

Oh, and the controls don't feel as precise.

i cannot believe they released the stranglehold demo as it is. what a fucking horrid framerate when things get hectic. i've hit single digits once :lol. damn, i'd be afraid of buying the game when it comes out in less than a month.

Enable Deep Black from PS3 XMB settings?

I agree about stable 30fps being better than fluctuating 60fps. Just pointing out one the differences I noticed.

Besides, in the PS3 demo sutscenes are videos not rendered in real time. Dunno why they did this.

Probably faster seek time to load a movie rather then load in-game assets (notice the civilians are different textures and body types from the badies).

Edit: Wait wait how come some peeps are complaining that the PS3 version of Stranglehold are reporting single digit fps while others are having locked 30 fps?

I'm not noticing much slowdown (well, other than involuntary Tequila Time), but the game itself, well it's garbage isn't it? I understand that it's a game designed to be action first and brains second, but the enemies here seem more like flood than human opponents. And going back to the supposed action based part, it doesn't really even succeed there, does it? Wimpy destruction, wimpy gunplay, it's all a fucking half-fart.

I ran into a couple glitchy parts at the start where it slowed down, but it seemed like a bug and couldn't reproduce it the same way. It was mostly locked and I'm pretty impressed. Missing some of the relief mapping and stuff on the floors but it runs wwaayy better than I would expect a UE3 PS3 game to.. hah. Made me a bit less nauseus since there were less dramatic framerate changes. Still overal not as nice looking as the 360 one. But better than expected. I was playing them both demos and and switching bewteen inputs to compare.

I have to say, I was far less spastic with the sixaxis than the 360 pad for some reason.

Also, the 360 version demo DEFINITELY also uses the same exact video for the cutscenes (as people picked out in the 360 dem thread). Neither are "real time", you can see video compression artifacts in both. Tons of games do it to mask loading, even whle they use in-game assets and effects.

Well, I didn't have the sound up loud (4am here) so I didn't notice that, but I agree on the rest of what you've said. The controls were pretty bad on the 360 version of the game, and the Sixaxis just makes things even worse.

One thing I do want to point out though - it's not that the PS3 version of the game is brighter, it's the PS3's video output in general. The PS3 seems to be outputting its image with a gamma of 2.2 (as it should) whereas the 360 measures around 2.6 on all the displays I've used it with, resulting in a darker, more contrasted image. (too dark/contrasted) But I agree the PS3 one did look a bit washed out. It looks like the lead platform was the 360 and it was then ported to the other systems.

It seems a lot of people don't notice bad framerates so much when there's a lot of action going on in games, so I'm guessing that's why? (just in general, from what I've noticed, not specifically Stranglehold)

The demo seemed to run worse than the 360 one from what I remember, but the differences didn't see significant. It certainly never went into single digits for me, but it was definitely sub-30 fps during the larger shootouts.

Live is really a huge improvement, but Live 07 was one of the worst sports games ever made

it's still not even close to 2k7 let alone 2k8

Yup that's true same as in Gears as well, for certain cutscenes they use a video.

I don't understand the hate for this game, I mean it's not AAA class exclusive game. But it's just a fast / fun non serious shooter.

You can fix the brightness in the options screen...it even has various settings for LCDs, Plasmas and DLPs. Nice.

And there wasn't any slowdown on my end...people who got into the single digits really need to redownload the game, because it's pretty smooth on my PS3 (20GB, upgraded to 120GB).

I just finished the demo and have no complaints about framerate at all.
There are different video modes in the options menu as well if you want to change it to CRT, LCD, Plastma, Film, dark, light, etc...
And I had to bump up the aiming sensitivity.

I didn't really feel the gameplay much at first myself, it just seemed like Max Hard Payne Boiled but as the demo progressed it began to grow on me.I am going to trade in a whack of games this weekend but I'm unsure if this, Stranglehold, is going to be one of the games I use that credit for.

I'm not as dissapointed in the game as you seem to be, it's definently a 20-30$ purchase for me, but when I think about all of the other games coming out this fall/winter it's kind of hard to justify getting Stranglehold over a few of the other games coming out.

I guess for me, I don't know, the action has always been the big talking point, and the end experience here comes real short of cashing the checks that the previews have written since it was first unveiled. The combat, specifically the combat motion, feels very artificial, and the destruction never impressed. Maybe I was just expecting too much. I'll give it another go later, maybe I can find more value in it with toned down expectations.

Wow - Stranglehold is a huge disappointment...it's like they had all these ideas and forgot to polish them. Animations are clunky, graphics look like shit, the sound is all muffled, crawling framerate in the section directly after the first showdown (no, it's not my PS3, it was just that section of the demo, and I played it twice)...

I understand what they were going for with this game, but they took a good concept and executed it badly.

I'll give it another go tomorrow when I get the chance.
