PSN Content 09/06/07 (Stranglehold & NBA Live demos, Motorstorm & NG Sigma DLC)

Well, I have both demos on 360 and PS3 and here's what I've concluded.

The sound on the PS3 demo sucks balls. How this happened, I don't know but someone was stupid enough to screw it up and probably turn off a bunch of potential buyers. The 360 version, on the other hand, sounds perfectly normal and I imagine the PS3 version will on release.

The graphics between the two are *surprisingly* dead even. The PS3 demo, however, is very misleading because it starts with the gamma settings completely out of whack so you have to go into the options menu and spend some time fixing the gamma until it looks normal again.

Colors seemed slightly more pale on the PS3 version but it was almost hardly noticeable.

On the 360 version, I noticed more screen tearing and less fluidity than the PS3 version. In contrast, the PS3 version saw at least one instance of complete slowdown (chugged a little) during gunfights involving heavy amounts of debris on screen at once. The PS3 framerate, otherwise - remained completely consistent.

Controls are pretty debatable. A lot of people here are saying that SIXAXIS is better but I would probably say that both sets are dead even - depends on your preferences.

Overall, I'm a pretty happy camper - I'm buying this for Hard Boiled on Blu-ray and I'm getting exactly what I wanted PLUS the game is ACTUALLY just as solid as the 360 version.

Consider me a day one purchase.

Does anyone think that Sony will re-release Motorstorm with all the downloadable content sometime in the future? Maybe when Sony brings the Greatest Hits line to PS3?

I actually wouldn't mind that and would definetly pick something like that up.....now just add cached loading :D

Hope you guys dont mind but I pulled my comparisions from the official thread and threw them up here in case anyone is wondering

Enjoy

Okay so here we go,

First thing I noticed when booting up the actual PSN Demo was the splash screen behind the icon on the XMB....or really lack there of :lol
Honestly though, I know its a demo so pretty confident that the actual final "wallpaper" will be something more substantial than just Tequila making a mean face against a black background....still, a really odd choice =/

anyway, enough of the trivial...

Comparisions between the 360 demo and PS3 demo

- As far controls go, I definetly prefer the control over Tequila with the SIXAXIS! This is due in part that I've really fallen in love with the sensitivity, resistance, and range of movement with the Analog Sticks on Sony's controller overtime. Controlling the reticule and Tequila just felt sooo much more fluid and responsive.
With the 360 controller's resistance (which i'm NOT a fan of), aiming and movement just isn't as "smooth" and "deliberate." You can be slightly moving the stick in a direction just for it abruptly shift in response and you go from a walk to a full on run. Its obsessive, but little things like this matter to me. As a whole though, this can be something very much tweaked to no end to get just right (see Resistance: Fall of man). Who knows though, as the final build may have more tweaked response with the 360 controller (as aiming overall felt tightened), couple with the fact they may have had more time polish the controls on the Sixaxis. Also preferred the "deadzone" calibration on the Sixaxis more

-Okay here we go! As far as I could tell after extensively playing BOTH builds back to back, is that they are essentially identical!
Allow me to go into more detail. So I was playing this on a 40inch S2000 Bravia, with the 360 version running through component and the PS3 running HDMI
When I finally launched into the PS3 demo, the first thing I noticed IMMEDIATELY was *gasp*...the color saturation just wasn't as "vibrant" as when I was flipping the input back to my 360 demo running. I thought this might be a similar situation with something like Rainbow Six: Vegas, which on PS3, has a much more subdued/dulled overall color palette.
...Also, the contrast wasn't popping as much....THEN, I realized the nature of running things through component as opposed through HDMI, and how component can tend to bump up saturation on colors and contrast.
Once I got past that, I took that into consideration and moved onto something else...
Next was textures and resolution of them throughout the environment. Here at first I thought the 360 build was maybe throwing out a few more visual tricks, like when staring at some bricks wall, it seemed like some of them might have some "displacement mapping" going on to make the bricks pop out more. When I flipped back and forth though between both inputs, the more and more I saw this wasn't the case. BOTH the 360 version and PS3 version seemingly have the SAME low res-ish textures in the EXACT same places.
Stranglehold as whole, doesn't have the strongest (read muddy) textures in alotta places (walls, NPCs, etc), but I still thought the 360 version might have a few slightly higher-res ones scatter throughout the environment....there isn't. At least from what I could tell flipping back and forth between inputs over and over again....as I said before, texture wise, the two skus are seemingly identical...
Moving on to Aliasing, from what I understand, UE3 doesn't do any real aliasing and in the case with Stranglehold it shows on BOTH versions....so no "free AA" for the 360 version...its just as jaggy as the PS3 version. Though at first I didn't think so, but then I again realized the component input was probably just "smoothing/blurring" things out more.
Now time to move on a to "effects"....namely Massive D
Once again, it appears that Massive D spread carnage is identical on BOTH platforms. I shot up several walls, pillars, tables, chairs, etc. and each time it seemed like both versions were spitting out an identical amount of debris.....with NO slowdown differences
Bloom lighting also appears identical....though at first it seemed like there was more pronounced in the 360 version, especially when going into "tequila time"....upon further inspection, it honestly doesn't seem like it
Finally I'll talk about the framerate. The only real difference in framerate between the PS3 version and the 360 version, is that in the 360 demo it appears like the devs "left Vsync" completely off...hence when looking at walls or in interiors, the framerate shoots up into 60+ fps. The PS3 version doesn't....but it looks like they probably turned Vsync back on in this build, because I didn't notice any tearing and the framerate almost stayed locked at 30fps the entire time....so basically it seems the the performance of both versions are also the same....except the Vsync thing, so I like to hear from somene who has the final retail 360 version and if they could tell me if it appears they turned Vsync back on...
....a comparision would be if you liked Bioshock with the "framerate unlocked" or not...thats the difference here...though your NOT getting a bump in "visual fidelity" with the locked 30fps on the PS3 demo...

-Anothering I noticed with the animations was how it seemed like maybe Tequila's animations had been "polished" just a hair more...It just seemed like he wasn't AS spazzy when moving throughout the environment, then when he was on the 360 build...then again, this could be just attributed to the added "range/lesson resistance" with the SIXAXIS analogs.....

-Once last thing that I'm sure MANY have noticed and have promptly exclaimed, "WTF?!"
What the hell happened to the sound quality in the PS3 demo!!!....
I know this for sure isn't what it will sound like in the final version, but why release a demo with a problem like this....
I'm blocked at work so I can't check the official Midway forums to see if anyone else has noticed or commented on this, but yes, it is very much fucking jarring and I don't understand...I only hope people don't think this is what its SUPPOSED to sound like....cause its not

So in closing though, I'm an now completely satisfied in my decision to preorder the Playstation3 Collector's Edition, for my concerns of it taking some "techinical shortcuts" has been removed....
I hope I answered or hit on some concerns or curiosities as far as both versions go....it certainly seems like the added delay in releasing the Playstation3 versions has payed off

Feel free to ask some questions or debunk my impressions if you feel you observed something widly different

Once again, the difference between this and something else that uses UE3 on playstation 3, namely RS:Vegas, is that Vegas was a full on port, where this is something that was built for both the PS3 and the 360 simutaneosly...and honestly it shows. Bravo Midway and I am a full on believer of UE3 on PS3...bring on Unreal Tournament 3 :D

thanks again if you read all of that :D

Holy crap, I'm actually blown away by the Stranglehold demo, it touched my "I miss Max Payne" nerve just right :lol

It controls great, framerate is pretty good considering all the action except there seems to be a bug with exploding fruit that drops the framerate into the single digits (Only happened once though). Seems like the game spawns 1 billion instances of the sprite or something.

Everything is just so cheesy, stylish and fun. Driving around on a wheelcart killing enemies? :lol In the video the multiplayer looked interesting as well. Where am I going to get the money to try all these games...

Lets just hope Sony does the greatest hits line right for the PS3. $19.99 or bust and minimize the shitty packaging.

Didn't like Stranglehold at all. Character models looked like Shenmue to me and the game played like a floaty Max Payne. Didn't go in expecting anything though.

AFAIR Vegas uses a Hybrid of UE2.0 and UE3.0. Stranglehold demo is the first true UE3.0 experience on the PS3.

LOTS OF STUFF
okay... that basically matches my brief experience with the demo this morning. i have zero reservations about waiting for the PS3 version now.

on framerate, i'm hearing that the final version on the 360 is locked at 30 fps too, unlike the 360 demo, which is a change i'm glad they made to both versions. locked 30 has always been preferrable to me than switching between 60 and 30 as you're playing... espescially when it hangs at 30 most of the time.

i couldn't tell a single difference in graphics between the two. gameplay felt identical...

but sound.

hmmn. i get what people are saying about this being muddier than the 360 version, but the sound on the 360 version needed work too. they have seemingly fixed a problem that the 360 version had where a whole bunch of sound effects were way too loud. stand on a piece of wood, and you'd think people were firing shotguns at you.

this is a completely seperate issue... hopefully one that if it remains in the final version of the game can be fixed, but sound wasn't perfect in the 360 one either.

so, yeah... comparing the demos (and considering that people with the 360 version say they locked it at 30 fps) i'd call it a wash right now between the two games... which means of course that the ps3 collectors version is the one to get since it's got the awesome extra of Hard Boiled in HD.

I thought the stranglehold demo was freakin awesome. It was a new take on the action genre. and definitely had alot of just plain fun moments.

I didn't notice any problems with sound though. How do you guys have your sound running? My video runs though HDMI, but I have my audio running through the RCA jacks (I have one of those old school "gaming" surround sound systems where you just plug the RCA into the sub and that's the only input lol).

Was it just me, or did the faces in this game look kinda....off?

I'm really interested if someone could evolve what AgentOtaku said about the V-sync in the 360 version. A whiny friend of mine is extremely picky about graphical differences between platforms (he has an enormous TV and tearing is very obvious on it), so it would really be of great help if someone could dive into this. :D

It's great to hear that the PS3 demo has turned out well. I was still considering getting the game, but wanted to wait and see how the PS3 version was running as I want that Hard Boiled disc. Looks like I can buy safely.

I'm so glad they've locked the framerate down (in both versions, it seems) as that was my number one complaint with the 360 demo.

I haven't tried the PS3 Stanglehold demo, but the 360 version ran at an uneven 60FPS, dropping every 10 seconds or so down to 30.
Yeah, err, no. You've got it in reverse. The 360 demo ran at 30 fps 90% of the time with occasional spikes up to 60 fps when moving through simple hallways with no enemies or while looking at a wall. This was likely due to the lack of v-sync as the 360 demo also had tearing. This was insanely distracting and it seems as if it has been fixed on both versions.

Did the SCEE release date thread disappear from GAF or something. Can't find it.
Anyways, Sony just confirmed to EuroGamer that the release date list posted by Kotaku isn't an official one.

According to the spokesperson, the only confirmed release dates Sony currently has are for PS3 titles Heavenly Sword (September 14th) and Warhawk (September 21st).

Sony declined to comment specifically on the rumored October 11th date for Home. But a spokesperson did state, "We will be making more announcements about Home at this year's Tokyo Game Show." TGS 2007 runs from September 20th - 23rd.

maybe he spent most of his time looking at a wall?

I encountered an instance of that in PS3 demo last night, but it was standing in the midst of A LOT of debris piled together. The sound of it all interacting was grating.

Can't say I really remember encountering anything like that in the 360 version, but it was a few weeks back.

Alright this is kinda sad. I'm stuck on the demo and I can't find a way to continue.

I'm at this part where you did the Tequila shootout and then you clear out enemies from the ground and balconies. You can even find some golden pistols, but I can't find a way to continue.

not hard....there are NO doors to go through (except the open ones), so just keep following the alleyways...if your at where I think (second stand-off encounter), just be sure to hang a right a bit after the encounter...this leads down the last alleyway

LOL? The game is so fucking linear. You get out of the room with the golden guns and follow the hallway.

Yeah, I see the continuation. I also see a weapon down that alleyway but a metal gate is in the way. I'm going to assume that I just hit a bug and I'm ****ed. Restarting demo and I don't mind restarting lol.

Stranglehold demo was pretty neat. A bit more cut/dry/soulless than I was hoping it would be but gunplay is definitely fun, and the bullet time minigames were fun as well.

Sound was definitely screwed up (not only slightly muffled, but had drop-offs at times), level of destruction was great, graphics were nice and detailed, but I have to say, these typical UE3 shaders / overbright lighting are becoming a bit boring to look at already.

Heavenly Sword 5th Animated short was absolutely awesome as usual, and track that comes with Motorstorm Weekend Revenge pack is quality stuff. Very nice store update.

Of course, Stranglehold is nowhere NEAR as impressive as UT3, but still...

well, i was hoping that after the news that Epic were working to improve performance on PS3, that when the ps3 sku got delayed that it was to implement some of those improvements.

obviously i don't know for sure that that is indeed what happened, but i know what i believe :)

wow color me surprized by stranglehold i wasnt interested in the game at first now once i played it its like amazing. might be a good rental and then ill buy when its get cheaper very good game i approve. another thing there was no slowdowns on my stranglehold framerate was silky smooth

I haven't taken the time to read through the thread, so please forgive if this is regurgitated, but as I was about to plop down the $5.99 for the Motorstorm Revenge Weekend addon, my jaw dropped in disgust as I saw that 4 additional vehicles were being sold seperately for a dollar a piece. Come on, they sell us a game for $60 with extremely limited track variety and modes and then when they FINALLY bring out some DLC for the game they have the fucking AUDACITY not to include all of the new vehicles along with it? I'm not gonna let them nickel and dime me myself, so I'm not downloading the content at ALL in protest. This is just as bad as the fucking Horse Armor.

:lol

All this outrage, and you completely missed the fact that you get all four cars included if you download the $5.99 pack.

:lol

SO Stranglehold PS3 is 30fps, and Stranglehold 360 is 60fps.

Why?
Err, no, that's not the case.

The final versions of both games are locked at 30 fps. The 360 demo, however, had vertical sync disabled resulting in occasional jumps to 60 fps. Unfortunately, those jumps only occured when either facing a wall or running through an empty ally with no enemies. The game, for all intents and purposes, ran at 30 fps with tearing. The final game has v-sync enabled, however, and runs at 30 fps. The PS3 demo is a bit more recent than the 360 demo and already has this fix in place.

questions to the motorstorm download content:

01) does the us content work with the eu version of the game? anyone tried already?

02) is the content shareable?

PLEASE HELP!

anyone know what the developers added extra becuase they said they were gonna add something extra for the pc and ps3 demo? anyone know?

having gone through the PS3 demo several times now...they seemingly didn't "add" anything.....at least as far as I could tell

haven't heard yet, but the developers are still saying they added something extra for the ps3 demo... so there's definately something in there somewhere.

guess it's not my hoped 'let me do the restaurant shoot out' though which is a real shame.

Oh, and there’s other big news! The Stranglehold PS3 demo is also out now! (Ok well, it’s out in North America… I hear its going to be released in Europe really soon too! Sorry, Europe. Still friends?) Like we did with the 360 demo, we rushed into the break room to get a picture of the demo being downloaded on the big screen, and Turk noticed something awesome. Our PS3 demo is 1337 megs. Yup. Oh, and there’s an extra hidden bonus in the PS3 demo. I hope y’all find it and enjoy it.

Good :) I was misinformed

So it isn't in the

Fucks sake if I have to wait longer than
2 weeks for
The game to come out it's
Horrific that I have to wait this long just for a

Really need to sort the shit out of this it's a UK store not the European store.

SO Stranglehold PS3 is 30fps, and Stranglehold 360 is 60fps.

Why?

It's not... the 360 demo version has bursts of 60fps in small areas with not much going on (hallways, corners, small rooms), but drops to 30 and below pretty frequently when there's actually action.

Basically, the PS3 demo version has a lower, but overall (slightly) more consistent framerate. The retail game will actuall change (as someone stated above) and will be locked at 30 for both.

Also, I found the NBA demo to be surprisingly good, besides the horrendous sprite crowds that show up in the distance of replays. On a native 1080p set (even though the game is 720p) I saw no jaggies or rough edges at all. It's 1000% better than Madden/NCAA.

Also, shit, Motorstorm is still an incredible looking game. Still easily up there with the best of next-gen stuff.

yep. that's the same as the 360 version too.

based on the quote i don't think it's a new unlockable just for finishing a certain difficulty as that isn't really 'hidden'... might be, but i'm thinking more along the lines of a new weapon hidden somewhere or something like that.
