I'm picking up Final Fantasy in like 2 seconds (metal box FTW) so I probably need to upgrade to something like today :)

Looks like Crisis Core has 3.73 on it but starts just fine on 3.71-4. Groovy!

Well, I finally did it and everything went fine. I have my PSP Slim with CFW 3.71 M33-4. Now I'm in the process of dumping some of my UMDs to do a test.

Question, what are the consequences of not backing up the nand file ? I went to my friends house and before knowing it, he was installing the CFW into my PSP without the backup first.

Yep. If you can get the Ultra II version cheaper, go for it. It's got faster write speeds.

Both have similar read speeds (which is mostly what the PSP will be doing, reading data). The main advantage of the Ultra II is that copying large files from your PC will takes less time.

Ok, my service battery just arrived, is it ok for me to take all my save files off my smaller ms and use that to install the firmware before putting my save files back on my memory stick? My monster Hunter 2 save file won't die right? :-/

OMFGGGGGGGGG I INSTALLED IT ON FUCKING VISTA!!! *Tears of joy* I'll explain how I did it after. But what do I do now? I'm on 3.71 M33-2. Should I upgrade to the 3.9 version? How do i do it? How do I play my FF8 CD's?

omg!:D

I don't think there was ever a problem with Vista installs... I've been using CFW since Vista RTM and even made my pandora battery/mem stick and even PSX.PBP games within it.

Nah, there was. Rarely ever worked....but I got it!:D What do I do now?

From what I read it seems that no uncrackable firmware can be developed, and it is easy to take the psps with the latest and newest firmware and hack or crack them wide open.

Is this correct?

I'm considering buying the psp god of war bundle which I heard comes out in june, and was wondering how long it would take for me to get homebrew and umd backups going. That is assuming sony does some modification that impedes hacking it.

So can it be done, a newer anti-hack psp model, or can I assume that it can't be done and I can start hacking away at that psp as soon as I get it in my hands?

Thanks, I missed this before and just got around to trying it. Unfortunately I'm having some problems. After downloading some additional DLLs to get PopStationMD to work I converted MGS and everything seemed to go ok.

When it boots I'm greeted with a black screen though. If I choose to reboot from disc 2, it loads but the audio stutters and I can only play the VR training. Any ideas?

I tried it with the least amount of compression which didn't seem to have any effect. I don't think it's the speed of my card causing problems as I've had other PS1 games running fine.

What CFW are you on & are you using POPSloader? From my testing MGS only runs fine for me under 3.71 POPS. Every FW above that, the audio is a mess.

Yes this is basically correct. The Pandora tools work the same as the Sony service, repair tools and are independent of the FW on the PSP. The only way to stop it would be for Sony to develop a new way for them to fix bricked PSPs and then disable the current method that we use on future PSPs.

Sony have already done something to stop people making their own batteries however. On the newer Slims on the market now, probably GOW bundle, Sony have disabled battery eeprom writing.

Can you guys recommend some tools for me? I upgraded to 3.90 M33-2. I'm looking to play my PS1 games but I need some help with this POPS emulator and such. Any other cool utilities?

Ok, now that is pretty fucked up..... I hit square by accident and the memory stick light starts flashing...... Then it switches off..... Is it safe to assume it just backed up without any options every displaying on my screen? o.o;;

Ok, I now I M33_371_INSTALL_LOG.txt on my memory stick.... I can't see any differences on my psp though. :-/ Ermmm. Halp? lol

EDIT: I think I ran the unbricker the first time..... I just went through the process again and did everything blind. :lol

I now have 3.71 M33 installed. lol

I got impatient waiting and decided to risk my PSP's safety instead.... v.v;;

Erm, I do have one problem though. I just went to run the update and I noticed there is one file there being read as corrupt data. Does anyone have any idea what that might be? :-/

Question, what happens if by any chance something goes wrong with my PSP and is still under warranty, can I restore the original FW to send it for repair to Sony or there is nothing I can do after I installed the CFW ?

Also, I asked this question before but didn't get an answer, in the rush of installing the CFW yesterday, I forgot to make a copy of the NAND, can I go ahead and make a copy just in case or I don't really need it ?

Are there any decent SNES emus out on Slim 3.90 m33-2?

One game I am wanting to desperately go through once and for all is Chrono Trigger, but for the life of me I cannot stand sitting there in front of my PC playing it.

I had a quick firmware question and figured this was the best place to ask it. I am buying a fat PSP from a friend and it still has 2.71 on it. My question is if I downgrade it to 1.5 then I can put whatever firmware I want on it right? Is there anything I should be aware of before attempting this?

I'm at work right now but if I remember correctly the snes9x_tyl 0.4.2me or something like that (the title of the emu is close to that, psp-hacks.com has this version) is the version that will work on the slim. I use it on my fat and it works great. Chrono Trigger works fine as well as a ton of games. The only games I've had speed issues with are ones that used certain processing features like Dirt Trax FX or something like that.

If you wanted a genesis emulator look at picodrive or dgen. I couldn't get dgen to find the roms but picodrive was a breeze and runs very smooth.

Both SNES and Genesis are easy to install and play games. I'm using 3.90 right now but will be downgrading to 3.80. You shouldn't have any problems with any firmwares as far as I know.

Do I need to keep any of the files currently on my ms? All I've got are the files from installation and the Update.....

I noticed when installing that my ms got formatted as FAT32, will I have to do this to any future ms?

Is there a list where I can find what works on psp slim with what firmware?

What files on the magic memory stick is it pertinent that you DO NOT DELETE once you've made it? I am curious because I can't fit a PS1 game rip on my card now.

I'm planning on getting FF8 on here once I finish Crisis Core. I'm running CFW 3.90 M33-2. Do I need to do the multidisc thing to merge all 4 images? Or can I just play through 1 disc at a time?

They are all needed. To be honest, you can delete the contents of the MS and put whatever you have on it as you have a Datel TOOL battery already??

Erm, when I install cfw is it meant to set up folders in my ms for me or is it meant to leave me to create iso folder, etc?

Also does using a eu psp make a difference when installing?

yeah for some reason POPS 3.80 won't play FF7 D2, it cries at me how it cannot start the game, I don't have any other game to try at work so I'm not sure if its something wrong with how FF7 is, or something I did wrong. I enabled the plugin and it sees the game just doesn't launch it.

If you format the MS in your PSP, it'll create all the necessary folders.

POPSloader is just a plugin, the content to actually fully utilise all the POPS from 3.00FW to 3.80FW has to be gotten elsewhere or extracted yourself.
If you search the thread or PSP HACKS you may find a link to download the necessary files.

Next question from me..... I tried to boot patapon from my MS, but, it won't load...... I pressed select and I changed the UMD ISO mode to M33 driver and it booted, but, then stayed on the loading screen for ages...... I assume it froze so I turned it off. :-/

Switch it to "Sony" mode for the umd and you will be ok and it will work, I had the same issue

Thanks. :D

Does it vary on a game by game basis or should I just leave it set to Sony?

Ever since I've installed POPSloader I have not been able to access the vshmenu. Is it possible that I have overwritten something important? I need to dump my crisis core umd, and using the built in dumper has always been the best way.

So can I follow the tutorial in the original post if I have a 3.93 Slim? Or do you still have to find someone else with custom firmware to install it with 3.50+?

If you mean the pandora tutorial one, yeah you can follow the guide and you will be all set.

No you can't follow the guide in the OP as its for people on CFW already, so they can make a Pandora to install CFW on regular PSPs.

You need a Datel TOOL battery and then follow the other guide posted earlier this page or the one before that.

if you've got a pandora battery use an easy installer to create your magic ms. i used catb50's using xp and it worked perfectly (current version install's 3.80 M33-5). just follow the dos prompts to the letter and you should be fine.

Thanks for the replies... :)

Is there any place that sells memory sticks and ships outside of USA? Amazon and Newegg are no good :(

So it looks like this would work then:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=9484190&postcount=729

I figured I would be able to do something with the Tool Battery after reading its description online. Alright. Well as soon as I get a Memory Stick bigger than 1GB, I'll be ready to go.

that would work. personally though i'd go with the catb50 installer as it will put you right at 3.80 m33-5 and upgrading your firmware from there is as easy as pie using network update.

just google catb50 and find the file, it tells you everything you need to do once you hit begin.

edit: looks like catb50 has a v3 of his installer out. kinda looks more complicated if you're the type of person that gets overwhelmed easily. i used v2 and it was simple and straightforward.

i dunno if i can post the file here or not. if i can i'll megaupload it if anybody who doesn't wanna search the net wants it (plus the forum where catb50 posted the v2 of his installer is down).

Like others have pointed out, I used this guide to create my pandora battery and then reverting it back to a regular battery. All you need is patience to open the battery without mangling its case (or worse, a finger). Be aware though, that the trace on the battery board is pretty much hair-thin, so at first you might have an 'oh crap.. it looked A LOT bigger in that picture' moment when you open it. However, it's easy to do and fixing it with a mechanical pencil only takes a second.
Once you're done with the procedure on that guide you will have 3.71 M33 installed and from there on YOU'RE FREE.

I managed to do it. Ruined the battery case in the process but I shaved all the rough edges off and it still fits ok. The chip/pin was in a different position to the ones ive seen pictures of though. Newer model I guess.

I'm planning on getting the Star Wars PSP Slim. I need some help. I read the first post, but I'm not exactly sure if I have it 100% right. So my phat is CFW, I create a pandora battery (do the 3.6v 2200 mAh ones work?) and afterwards I create a pandora MS? Then I use those on my slim to get it to CFW? Is that all? Sorry it just seems more confusing than it really is to me I think. It sounds simple enough, but it seems I might be missing something. My current CFW is 3.71. Thanks.

Also this might sound dumb, but is the 3.6v 2200 mAh battery compatible with the slim? I guess I could just use the battery that comes with the slim to convert into a pandora battery instead and not waste the better battery (although I can convert it back, I don't really need to).

Yeah, if you have a psp running CFW, then you can easily convert a fatty battery into a pandora, match it to your mem stick, then use that mem stick and fatty pandora to crack your slim. Totally safe. I've done it for a handful of fats and slims already.
