No to the 1.50 kernel, and check out my OP for help on ripping your discs. Towards the middle.

As always, thank you kindly!

I will give it a shot tomorrow and we'll see how it goes!

No problem, and good luck. If you have any issues, drop me a line and I'll try to help. :)

Hey Mejilan, I'm running 3.71 M33-4 on my Phat and I want to upgrade to the newest CFW. What tutorial should I follow?

Edit: And no, I've never used a Pandora battery or memstick.

Here's the readme

"Instructions.

- Copy UPDATE folder to /PSP/GAME and run the program.

If you are in 3.90 M33, that's all needed.
If you are in previous version, you need to download 390.PBP and put it in same folder or let
the program to download it for you."

It's not difficult.

Go to Dark Alex's website, download the latest M33, and put the UPDATE folder in the GAME folder of your memory stick.

You may also need to download the official 3.90 firmware and rename it to 390.PBP and put it on the root of the memory stick.

You can then update as per usual.

Thanks. I was just making sure that was still doable since I hadn't updated in a while and it seems to be so different now with all the Pandora stuff.

Hey I just fixed it up a bit, because you don't put 390.pbp in the root, you put it in the UPDATE folder.

Good luck.

Also, what's really cool is, when you get to 3.90, if another update comes out, you'll be able to update it straight away via Network Update on the PSP. It all gets downloaded from Dark Alex's server automatically.

Thanks buddy. Running 3.90 M33-2 now. Anything I need to know about Pops emu in this version?

Could someone please explain POPS to me as I'm on 3.90 M33-2 and would like to play some of my PSX games and also some recommendations for PSP apps/emulators.

What is the most stable firmware for a PSP Slim ? I'm running right now v3.71 M33-4 and I was wondering if I should update to v3.90 M33-2

I am totally out of the loop with the PSP, but am planning on getting one sooner or later for the PS3 integration features.

That being said, I would love to use a firmware that allows homebrew but my instinct is telling me with all of the previous hullabaloo about firmware downgrades that in order to have a PSP that uses a custom firmware you have to give up a ton of Sony's firmware enhancements.

Is this still the case? Is it still a trade off between firmware features and homebrew?

that would work. personally though i'd go with the catb50 installer as it will put you right at 3.80 m33-5 and upgrading your firmware from there is as easy as pie using network update.

just google catb50 and find the file, it tells you everything you need to do once you hit begin.

edit: looks like catb50 has a v3 of his installer out. kinda looks more complicated if you're the type of person that gets overwhelmed easily. i used v2 and it was simple and straightforward.

i dunno if i can post the file here or not. if i can i'll megaupload it if anybody who doesn't wanna search the net wants it (plus the forum where catb50 posted the v2 of his installer is down).
That's what I'll do then. I ordered the TOOL Battery Converter and a 4GB Memory Stick Pro Duo last night.

Maybe a stupid question though: Once the firmware has been installed, are you able to use the magic memory stick for files on your PSP and do you have to use the Pandora battery while running firmware? (For the second question: Basically, what do you do with the battery afterward?)

All you "lose" is the LocationFree player (which wasn't very good anyway) and the Korean font. Everything else is entirely intact.

Holy crap, my mum got me FFVII Crisis Core for my birthday and it arrived today. Seems to be an asian release, but, with English language...... Strange. Anyway, I decided to rip the game and it's 1.7 GB. :'( That's nearly half my mem stick gone already. :'( I should have splashed out on a second. rofl

Can someone link me to a guide with the easiest way to install CFW on a fat with 2.60 firmware? This is not using a pandora battery as we don't have one for a fat. lol

Has anyone else been having problems running Final Fantasy VII in pops? I have a PSP running 3.90 m33-2, and FFVII in Pops v3.71, but saved games don't seem to take. I save, and it stores in the RAM fine; as long as I don't leave the game, the save is still there. If I leave the game and come back later, the game save is gone. I don't even see it reading from the memory stick during gameplay, so it seems like the saves aren't getting written.

Sony have already done something to stop people making their own batteries however. On the newer Slims on the market now, probably GOW bundle, Sony have disabled battery eeprom writing.
So the only way to install CFW on these would be by hard modding the battery or by using a datel tool battery? Thats annoying.

The Tool Batteries are a lot more convenient than a lot of the other options.

Are the 2200mAh batteries that Sony has been selling in the Extended Battery Kit for the Slims still Pandora-able?

I couldn't say definitively, but I would imagine so, as they appear to be the exact same battery as the original Stamina Packs. The "slim" version simply has an oversized battery cover included.

Alright, I'm sorry if any variation of this has been asked/answered already, but...
I'm looking to buy a PSP new because the temptation of Crisis Core, Patapon, Star Ocean 1, etc. have finally swayed me.
In addition, I'd love to be able to play some of the PSX games from my collection on it. Can I just buy any version now, and "alter" the firmware to meet the needed specs to play PSX games? Is there a certain version I need to look for when I'm buying?

and does anyone know of any websites/retailers running specials on PSPs at the moment?
thanks in advance :D

You can buy any version, but you need a way of making a service-mode battery, known as a "Pandora" battery, in order to alter the firmware. This is most easily done if you already know someone with a custom firmware PSP, in which case the instructions are in the OP. If you do not know someone with a custom firmware PSP, you can either purchase a Datel TOOL battery to use as a service-mode battery, or open up your battery and directly modify it, but this only if it is a fat PSP battery; slim batteries will not work.

I know that people have said that 8 GB Memory Sticks work with firmwares 3.80 and above, but does all software work on sticks that large? (In particular, would POPSLoader work?)

navanman

Crown Prince of Custom Firmware
The Man from Del Monte says YES.

8GB cards work with all FW greater than 3.00 and all plugins, POPSloader works fine too.

Man it's taking a while... it's on " Unpacking... done.
Please wait...
" screen for like 5-8 minutes.

the last one 3.90-m33. I followed the steps, it showed the update logo under games/memory stick, i clicked it it did the whole PSP booting thing then proceeded to run " Unpacking... done. Please wait... " and now i'm just staring at this screen, it's been a while...

Could be an issue with your memory stick. They're not all created equal. Leave it running for another while, see if it completes on its own.

You didn't mention 3.71 or anything 3.7. You go from 3.52-m33-4 right to 3.90 m33. Would that be the issue?

Mejilan

3.52 M33-4 (or M33-3) is the requisite gateway to higher firmwares. From 3.52 M33-4 (or M33-3) you can cleanly upgrade to 3.71 M33, 3.80 M33, or 3.90 M33.

No, going from 3.52 M33-4 to 3.90 M33 is fine. Your 3.90 EBOOT may be corrupted. Download it again and transfer it over to your MS.

The official one you mean?

He probably means the official 3.90 eboot. But it can never hurt to redownload both.

If it is a memory stick issue, then let it run. I'm not sure about this newer method of updating, but the old custom firmware flashes could take up to 45 minutes or an hour with certain brand memory sticks. They always took something like 3-4 minutes on my Sandisk.

Well, i tried it again and nothing guys. Does the batt level need to be at a certain level? Moon and star a certain alignment? Who knows, i'm stuck on 3.52 m33-4 :/

Have you tried reformatting your memory stick?

When you redownloaded official 3.90, did you grab it from a different source?

Mejilan

Running off of Custom Firmware
Sooo, back your saves (and any other important data) up to your PC? :lol

I've had issues with eboot downloads from psp-hacks. Try qj.net or maxconsole.net or something.

I've always grabbed my official firmwares straight from playstation.com, but that's not an option for you now that 3.93 is out.
