PSP Custom Firmware Thread

I also have a similar question like the previous post above, I just picked up MGS Peace Walker on UMD, but I am running custom firmware GEN D-3. Is there anyway for me to play this from the UMD on that particular firmware? I tried running it, and so far it gives me an error.
Only way I know of of getting it to run under GEN is to make an iso of the umd, add prometheus to it and run it from the memstick.

My new memory stick arrived today. Do I need to format it in some special way or can I just create my own seplugins folder etc? My psp seem to find the memory stick without any problems from the get go so I assume it was already formatted by Sandisk?

Edit: The format stick feature seems to have created all the necessary CFW folders automatically. Awesome :D

This happened to me a few months ago. Screen's dying. I ordered a replacement from eBay for about $60 (supposedly a Sharp original screen, or some shit), followed an online tutorial, and after a bit of technical surgery, had the PSP up and running again without TOO many issues. Make sure you get a replacement screen for exactly your generation of PSP. For me, it was a PSP 2000.

Ah, I see. Thanks for the information, it's much appreciated. I'll start looking into replacement screens (PSP-2000 model, 2001 to be exact). I do remember hearing that Sony charges $75 for most fixes, but that might be out of the question at this point. A member from another forum suggested that I try resetting the screen cable first since I'll have to open it up anyway, so I guess I'll see how that goes.

So, well, I've been neglecting my PSP for my DS and Wii for the last couple of months, and I've been left behind quite a bit with my CFW.

Can anyone recommend me the best way to get to the latest and best CFW from my current situation?

I'm running a PSP Phat (1000) with the following firmware: 5.00 M33-6

Thanks guys!

I didn't really read all this, but I wonder why people make it so difficult.

Just upgrade to the latest CFW, put something called "iso_tool 1.51" (google it) on your memory card along with an iso file of the game you want to play, launch the iso tool and select the game iso, then select "decrypt". All done.

Even people with Apple computers should be able to do that.

To be fair, in 2008 you could network update your CFW, new CFW was being released within a week or two of new OFW, 100% of all PSPs released were Pandora ready, 100% of games worked on CFW, and there was no "decryption" or anything.

I bought Crash Bandicoot 2 on PSN. It gives me the warning screen and then eventually the system just shuts off.

Anyway to fix this? Im guessing I have to crack the eboot somehow? I'm using 5.50 Gen-D3

Yes, but it is 2010 and security has tightened. I fail to see the relevance of your post.

Crap

Can't get it to work on 5.00 M33-6 with the 6.20 prx. Followed the instructions for installing it and have enabled with everything else that needs to be enabled.

This Pandora business, the GEN-D3 has an option if you press the select button to "make a Pandora battery". Is this everyone should do? Can I make one even though I only have one unmodded battery? And if so, can I still use it normally when it's in Pandora mode so to speak? Back in the day, the answer was no to almost all of these I believe :S Is it even necessary if I already have a functional CFW with little need to dual wield CFW's, even though that would be nice to have as backup?

Is it possible to downgrade 5.50 Gen D3 to other versions of Gen or even 5.00 M33?

Apparently, how you do that, I dunno.

So, what's the route to go with Peace Walker PSN on CFW?

firehawk12 said:
It seems as if you can just run the D2 installer.

I can confirm that this works, I just used the "5.50 GEN-D2 Quick Updater" a minute ago and it changed my CFW from GEN D3 to GEN D2. So easy. Only issue was it corrupted my saves like when I originally went to D3. I also read somewhere to turn off all plugins when you do this just in case (dunno why though).

As someone who is absolutely paranoid about changing my firmware, I was surprised how easy it was to go back to GEN D2.

Yeah well... downgraded to D2 won't let the PSN version run. Going to see if removing the DRM off that version will let the PSP freaking boot it instead of "game can not be started 800" error me. :|

I read that some people got it to work by fiddling with Prometheus. Not sure if this applies to the PSN version though.

I can post the guide here if it's OK.

NPD didn't do anything for me, did it for you?

I think the DRM check is what is getting to it. I wonder if spoofing the firmware thing to where it says whatever is the latest (6.20?) will get it to run.

Such bullshit. :/

The 6.20 prx plugin beta doesn't work for me(UMD version-tested from the umd and memory stick). Some people are saying it works but all I've gotten are errors.

Well, if it isn't working for the UMD it def. isn't going to work for the PSN version.

I didn't try NPD but I did try the firmware.txt trick with no luck

I got my copy of Peace Walker today, but I was too busy 100%'ing NSMB Wii, so I haven't had a chance to fiddle with. However, I do have a few comments/suggestions:

1) Sony defeated the version.txt trick like in late 2009 or some shit. No fucking way that's going to work for any game released this year.

2) NPDecryptor is ONLY for stripping PSN DRM from PSP (but not PSOne) games. It alone isn't going to be enough to render newer downloads playable.

3) That leaves decryption. And going by comments and earlier releases, the 5.50 - 6.00 on-the-fly decryption that 5.50 Gen-D3 manages won't suffice. Newer games come with 6.20 encryption that requires the decryption of the eboot.bin (and something additional PRXes and resources, depending on the game) via the Prometheus decryption.

I had to do number 3 for earlier releases such as the newest Harvest Moon, Prince of Persia, and Hexyz Force. Google up a tutorial and patch the Peace Walker ISO you dumped from your UMD and it'll PROBABLY work.

If you can't install 5.50 Gen-D3 directly, then your upgrade path would probably entail:
5.00 M33-6 > 5.50 Gen-A > 5.50 Gen-B > 5.50 Gen-D > 5.50 Gen-D3

Some of those steps MAY be skippable. I haven't had to worry about this since last year, so you're probably just safer scouring this thread or Google.

I'm not using the UMD. I'm using the PSN store download I just bought when the store updated today. :|

eboot.pbp is the only thing in the PW store file I have. stripping the DRM won't let it boot, decrypt from GEN won't let it boot.

If I could just get the damn thing to not error me out, I'd be happy as a clam. :/

Anyone try that 620 MRX plugin that was posted a couple of days ago? Did that lead anywhere?

YES!

FUCKING FINALLY! TOOK FOUR HOURS!

*Policenaunts Konami Logo "DOOT DOOT DOOOOODOOOOOOODOOT" from MGS1.mp3*

PSN MGSPW WILL work with this method. I just now need to try and see if it'll freeze on GEN-D3, if it does, I'm going to see if that time machine method will work (or possibly downgrade to GEN-D2, again *ugh*)

But at least it's a start.

Some people say it works for them but I've had no luck with it.

Did you put the .prx in /seplugins/? Did you edit the game.txt in /seplugins/ with the string it wants? Did you go into flash0:/vsh/etc/version.txt and edit all the 6.10 (or whatever your firmware setting is) to 6.20/620/etc? Because it's working for me. US PSN store bought PW on a PSP-1000/1001 TA-082 mobo.

I haven't even gotten it to appear in my plugins list. :lol

If anyone's gotten that far post exactly what you did.

yeah I'm going to see if I can find the CE tomorrow and just go OFW. I want this and Persona this summer and F custom firmware. I've had my PSP hacked since the FIRST exploit was found on Lumines. I think I'm done with it all though, I've had my fill of emulators and such. I'll just carry around a few UMDs, buy a few games on the PSN like everyone else.

Just follow this

- Copy the plugin into SEPLUGINS
- In game.txt add the line "ms0:/seplugins/m33_620.prx 1"
- USB into flash0/vsh/etc and edit version.txt to "release:6.20"
- In the recovery menu, make sure "use version.txt" is enabled

Should work

That's word for word from the site I got it from and mine didn't work. There's a lot of ways you can go wrong I think.

For example:

- USB into flash0/vsh/etc and edit version.txt to "release:6.20"

Does this mean just turning every instance of "release:X.XX" and "release:XXX" to "6.20", "620." Does it require sourcing any other changes of the 6.20 version.txt?

- game.txt

Does this mean literally "game.txt" or a text file called "game"?

What about capitalizations? I've seen discrepancies all over the place. Mine certainly doesn't work so I figure something is slightly off somewhere.

Agreed!

I'm over the CFW. I just want to buy a game and play it immediately and not have to wait for someone to crack some encryption just so I play it. I have no use for CFW no more. I saw what it can do. Plus the support for CFW isn't as nowhere as it use to be.

Did this and kept the capitalization just in case (so GAME)

Persona works and this works. Calm down. I played Persona this past month on GEN just fine. :/

Just use the .prx for this. If going with the PSN version. If you're using the UMD, can't help. Own the digital.

Guys, I want to buy UMD Peace Walker. I have 5.50 GEN-D3. Any known issues with running this off UMD and/or ripped on to MS? This whole decryption business and CFW lagging behind OFW version has made things too complex for the casual PSP user now. :x Thanks.

just get the time machine and peacewalker will run fine on GEN-D3...easiest method by far

I heard Peace Walker has an optional install feature for voices and loading.
So when I load the game off my memory stick via GEN-D3, can I install it and then simply delete the files and it would still work with the additonal voices and the improved loading? Because all the files are already on the stick?

You guys should specify if its either the PSN or UMD version that you have working. Reading these relies are confusing. I think those who have got it to work should make a bolded post reporting specifically what they did...

I'm going to buy the game at the end of the week, I'm not sure if it's worth all this hassle you guys are putting yourselves through for the CFW. I want to own to the UMD (because I like physical media) and still be able to play the game off the memory stick. But if that's beyond happening for me, then bummer. :(

Bought the UMD and ripped it yesterday. I downgraded to 5.5 GEN D2 and used ISO_tool to patch it. Did a full install for the voice overs and It's working fine so far, but I've only done the first story and optional mission.

I've heard of some people not being able to proceed past a certain point and I'm just wondering what to look out for.

My contribution to society - this is what I did to get my PSP-1000 phat running custom firmware 5.00 M33-4 (I've been out of the loop for a long time, I know) playing my UMD of Metal Gear Solid - Peace Walker:

1.) Updated to M33-6 (Google M33-6, copied UPDATE folder to /PSP/GAME and ran it).
2.) Downloaded M33_620.prx from a link a few pages back, here it is again:
http://endlessparadigm.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=23631
3.) Installed plugin and modified/enabled version.txt:
- Copy the plugin into SEPLUGINS
- In game.txt (located in seplugins, create one if not there) add the line "ms0:/seplugins/m33_620.prx 1"
- USB into flash0/vsh/etc and edit version.txt to "release:6.20" (file was read-only for me, and I only needed to change that one line, changed it back to read-only when finished).
- In the recovery menu, make sure "use version.txt" is enabled (under configuration).
4.) Rebooted PSP and Peace Walker started up just fine!

I haven't played the game much since I just got this working a few minutes ago so I have no idea if there are crashes or lock ups but I can vouch that the game at least runs past the player entry screen and first cinemas :) Good luck!

Doesn't matter if you buy the UMD or PSN release. You need to get around that somehow.
In my third bullet point, I mentioned Googling up the Prometheus decryption method. I'm not sure exactly how the process would change for PSN downloads, but it'll be just as necessary with that as with the UMD release.

im using the UMD version (decrypted of course) and then the time machine...you could downgrade to GEN D2 aswell if thats easier and skip the time machine stuff

Not for the digital version it won't. PSN version stops cold on bootup. You need the 6.20 .prx to even get it to RUN.

Oni said:

Nope. Simply get the .prx, edit /seplugins/, version.txt trick (which does work, so mei is WRONG on that front) enable, boot game. *policenauntsthemeforkonamilogo.mp3*

I haven't ran into freezes or anything so far, but granted I'm not very far into the game.

Next up on work arounds is getting PSNfucker to get the tshirt/uniqlo codes to work as they require PSN to even get. :/ Ugh. But that isn't a huge deal. The game running is the hard part. Once you get past that everything is gravy.

At least for the PSN verison. Dunno about UMD. Can't care.

The newer versions of PSNFucker have been re-branded to PSNLover, FYI.
Just want to make sure that you don't install an obsolete version by accident.
