PSP Custom Firmware Thread

I apologize for asking a totally idiotic question, but can the PSP-3000 run custom firmware now? When I ask Mejilan last September, it couldn't at the time. Has that changed since then?

I'd love to be able to run old PS1 games on my PSP and also dump PSP disc games (like PW) so I can run them off a memory stick. I really dislike the having to run them off the disc (much like why I always install to the HD on my 360), prefer shorter load times, and I like the ability of not needing to switch UMD's if I'm traveling.

Thanks!

I've been running a form of CFW on my PSP 3000 since last August. The catch is you need to have firmware version 5.03 for it to work and it requires using a special Tiff image called Chick-HEN, then use a special CFW (Either CFW Enabler or GEN for 5.03.) The catch is if you completely power down the system it goes back to OFW and you need to do the Chick-HEN + CFW enabler thing again.

After ripping my PW UMD to my mem stick and decrypting the ISO using Prometheus, PW runs perfect on the latest 5.03 GEN.

Ah, good show on the 6.20 trick. It's sad, I have my copy of the game but my PSP is in a completely different city so I can't check it out for myself. :lol

I wonder what trick Sony will have it's sleeve after this latest hack though. I'm just glad enough nerds out there care about the PS3 to keep CFW alive.

There's been a bunch of PSP firmwares released since GEN-D3. Has the GEN group said anything since those releases, is there any progress? were they shutdown by sony?

So if I have the current version of the Sony firmware I'm perma screwed then?

Well thanks for answering though.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Is there any PSP mp3 playing app that can run an mp3 file at 1.5x or 2x speeds ? like the regular PSP video played can do with the video files ?

I know it's an odd request, but any recommendations will be appreciated.

It's only recently that 5.50 GEN-D3 stopped working on games without some extra trickery and there haven't been any major updates in the OFW to speak of, so there hasn't been a reason to release a major update I guess.
I suppose it's a different matter if you're talking about access to PSN though.

I don't know about perma-screwed, there's recently been a couple exploits released that work on firmware 6.20 but so far it only allows access to certain homebrew applications, nothing along the lines of what CFW allows.

With any luck, they'll find a way to make it work like they did in 5.03.

I'm reading all this and wondering is it time to downgrade to m33-6 from D3? That 6.20 prx sounds like it's about that time and I'll have videos back as well right?

Peace Walker just crashed on me after the second animated cutscene using the GAME.txt method. We'll see about this. Going to try to reload my save later.

What are the losses of installing Custom Firmware over normal firmware and does CFW work on PSPGo yet? If so can you play your PSP UMD back ups on PSPGo?

I'm playing Peace Walker on 5.50 Gen-D from the memory stick. (old version, yeah).
No crashes.

The newer versions of PSNFucker have been re-branded to PSNLover, FYI.
Just want to make sure that you don't install an obsolete version by accident.
Ah, I installed the older one, but was able to get online and download content.

With or without 620.prx?

From what I understand, you can only run homebrew/emulators on a PSPGo. Not sure how to get firmware on there, or why you can't play ISO files, but that seems to be the consensus.

I would love to be wrong on this though. After dropping my PSP-2000 last week and semi-bricking it, I'd love to pick up a PSP Go for all my backups/etc.

They have the white PSP Go for $150 today on Dell.com too...

Cool, trying to figure it out cause I'm bringing my PSP on a business trip next week and don't want to be stuck without it. :-/ Thanks.

I heard Peace Walker has an optional install feature for voices and loading.
So when I load the game off my memory stick via GEN-D3, can I install it and then simply delete the files and it would still work with the additonal voices and the improved loading? Because all the files are already on the stick?

Install options on games just makes it load some files from the stick over the umd. It will not make ISO's any faster, if anything it will make them slower since the game has to source for data outside of its file structure.

In all seriousness though I am having a hard time believing anyone could be stupid enough to not understand what an ISO is and its benefits when they are USING THEM...... God why did I even bother answering such a stupid question! Stupid stupid stupid.....

Just got a used slim PSP, with FW 5.00 M33-6 already installed.

Should I be using 5.50 GEN-D3?

No. Neither Gen or M33 is the recent OFW so when games are able to work on 1, it will work for both. Out of the 2 firmwares M33 is more stable and has a memstick speed hack.

Okay, so Peace Walker crashed again at the exact same spot using the 6.20.prx method. Going official, unless GAF has any thoughts?

Use the Prometheus (SP?) patch on an ISO of it and it works flawlessly.

Homebrew runs on a PSP Go these days? mind pointing me in the right direction for some guides to setting it up?

Search for Halfbyte Loader. Latest version is 0.85.

Currently it requires you to load up the Patapon 2 Demo, load a saved game, press a couple of buttons and then takes you to a homebrew loader menu. A few of the emulators have been updated to run, a few old ones work by chance, and a bunch are broken.

It's improving everyday though.

*EDIT* Should also note that you can't run backups on the Go, just homebrew.

Hey guys, maybe someone could answer as I just want to double check.

I have a PSP-2000, an early one that could be hacked before, I did it once with the chicken picture thing, but I've upgraded my firmware, and apparently I can hack it with a pandora battery, but I don't want to buy one, is there something like the chicken thing I can use at the moment?
Sorry to bump my old post, but any takers? It was at the end of a page.

Thankyou kind sir.

Just fyi, but back in the day I was one of the PSP homebrew "pioneers" with my good old imported firmware 1.0 PSP (which had literally zero protection, still baffles me to this day) and I helped write a lot of the early guides to help others get themselves setup (things got crazy once the 1.5 "swaploit" exploit hit). Ah memories, such a noob these days though.

Ehh. Didn't know it was so "crude" still. The PSP Go would be amazing with full CFW on it. I have so many UMDs I just can't ignore. Is it like impossible to run iso/eboot files on it? Or is there just not enough people that care?

To be honest I'm no expert on PSP homebrew but I've been toying around with it..

It sounds like they're making progress on loading ISOs. Psp-hacks.com has info that might make sense to you but I don't really understand what it means.

They dumped some code or something, they were able to install custom fonts on flash 1? Sounds like they're making progress. Here's hoping I can eventually get my retail copy of Crisis Core on my PSP-Go!

CFW does not exist on the PSPGo, there's a hack that gives the ability to play a few homebrew.

*EDIT* Double post? whoops.. I'll try and fix it, kinda.

They found the kernel key for the Go. I'd expect CFW as soon as someone steps up to it. I doubt it'll be GEN, but the fact that someone even found the kernel key is promising. It's been a very long time since we've seen this kind of great established advancement in the homebrew community.

I just bought a PSP today. It's an old fat one with System Software 3.51 M33

From looking through this thread, that seems like a very old firmware. Unfortunately the Dark Alex site is down. Can anyone point me in the right direction to learn how to upgrade the firmware myself? Hopefully I can do it without buying the Pandora batter..

What's the name of the homebrew application that lets you play PSP games on a computer monitor through a USB cable? I bought Metal Gear Solid 5 today and after I get it decrypted and working on my PSP, I want to play it on my monitor.

Try the PSNLover plugin. It definitely works for 5.50 Gen-D3. It might work 5.00 M33-6.

Seriously? I'm on D3, put the version 2 of PSNFucker/Lover on it, edit the seplugins and vhs.txt, nada. Says it can't connect.

Thanks for the advice guys. I've had no success updating to Firmware 3.52 M33 yet. I'll keep plugging away. This PSP has been in a cupboard for the last few years and it needs a big update :D
