PSP Remaster Series Announced for PlayStation 3

Oh thank God. I wanted to play Birth By Sleep but didn't want to buy a PSP for it and a handful of other games. This is unexpected and welcome news. Hope this gets well supported.

Is this really a dramatically big deal?

They've already done PSP ports to PS2.

This is just more of the same thing to PS3.

It's not as if all PSP games are going to PS3. It's just a new mandate to port, which they have already done here and there.

Well, I assume they mean relative to the Japanese market.

Yes, it has to be remembered that while the PSP has very few seven-figure sellers in Japan, it has an absolutely huge number of games that have sold low-mid six-figures, and all of those games have made very tidy profits - more than Garaph shows, even, as I know of at least three titles whose information on Garaph is out of date and inaccurate. This is in stark contrast to the NA or Euro PSP market, where a few games do pretty well and everything else is just a barren, desperate wasteland.

The PSP market is really strong in Japan, and this is a fairly clever (and obvious) way of exporting many of those titles to other markets where the PSP is much weaker. The real question becomes this: how much "remastering" is required for a release? (In other words, how much money do devs have to sink into it?)

Peace Walker has been hinted for a while now.

I seem to remember something about the art assets actually being created at a resolution higher than the PSP could handle and then scaled down. If so, that decision was probably specifically to make it really easy to offer an HD version (for PS3, NGP and whatever else) using the original assets further down the line, and very easily earn welcome additional revenues.

I'm confused about what this is. Is this some sort of emulation ala PS1 titles?

Or is it just Sony saying "hey guys lets port all our PSP stuff to PS3!"

I'm hoping it's the former, and that it's cross-compatible with NGP and available through PSN
Why would you want the former? The latter would be a far superior product. If any indication from what has been announced everything will be a port. Hope locoroco, patapon, crush, and resistance retribution. Never owned a psp since it was a shitty product (short battery life bad controls, long load times) at least for me

Says alot about the PS3s library 3+ years into its life z_z

Erm, you must not own a PS3. It's got way more exclusives than the Xbox360 and share the multiplatform games (who only in the beginning were weak ports). Either you're biased or you really don't know the PS3 library.

I definitely want Peace Walker on Remaster. The PSP controls made me want to shoot myself.

There are so many games I would like to see. I'm getting a bit excited now.
Peace Walker and the Valkyria Chronicle games are what comes to my mind at first. And would love to see 3rd Birthday and Dissidia too.

Wow, didn't expect to wake up to anything like this.

Basically PSP in the West is now officially dead by Sony hands. In the Far East, unknown outcome, could possibly push PS3 a bit, hurting PSP a bit but not killing it altogether.

But I think this is bad overall for Sony, it just kills a major NGP selling point *and* makes users expect a similar treatment to NGP games.

Cool for some lost cause localizations, but it makes me wonder if they are going to screw PSP users releasing just the PS3 remastered titles.

The system is selling in the mid five digits each month. This happened already.

If playing PSP games was a very important NGP selling point, I think the system is doomed already.

What's the big deal actually? This happened on the PS2 before and it's not like all PSP games are instantly playable on the PS3 in HD. Might be interesting for MH3p though.

It's been dead for a long time.

AWESOME NEWS, now the PS3 can have the JRPG godness that the PSP has, please SONY give me these games, i will give you a BJ if you give to me on the PS3:

PopoloCrois
Brave Story: New Traveler
Last Ranker
God Eater Burst

That is all, i rest my case.

PS: Oh and Final Fantasy Type-0 please

I wonder will the people saying, "Peace Walker! Dissidia etc" complain when playing on the PS3 that these games play too much like a handheld game.

Will definitely be getting Peace Walker day one if they change the controls for the dualschock, or better yet, allow me to change the controls how I see fit!

I could never master "The Claw"

Its official now, no need to fake anymore. It was dead in the market for a long time and Sony just pulled the plug. We could call it euthanasia.

I didn't say very important but it certainly was a point to NGP to play remastered PSP titles (both hits and making those unlikely to be localized a better chance). Now that point is gone, and on top of that the console superior race is reinforced in their belief that the handheld is a lesser race that gets stripped of their hits when necessary and is shoved with half-efforts.

I'm very interested now in the E3 conference to see just how does Sony think of making NGP relevant. Right now they could call it the PS3 portable viewer, strip it of hardware and just make it stream from PS3 to the portable screen.

My guess would be that this program exists to help generate interest in sequels for the NGP and let their biggest partners make more money on their PSP titles.

As you said, this doesn't have much obvious benefit for Sony's handheld ambitions, unless they're getting something in return for doing this.

Great news, now give me Peace Walker, Crisis Core (so I can finish it) and The Lost Frontier. Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD is a good start.

I wonder how SE will feel about this for their upcoming FF Type-0. I mean, surely it's gonna hurt their sales a bit because some people will be wanting FF Type-0 remaster series.

I'm also wondering if this is the same as PSP re-releases for NGP news we got when NGP is first announced. it'd be really cool if the PSN version of FF Type-0 will be forward compatible with PS3 and NGP.

I would expect about as much from this as we do from the PS2 remaster series. A game or two here and there.

Actually, I'm in Texas and just randomly fell asleep after drinking some beers. It's 3:50 AM here.

I don't think this really changes anything related to the NGP. It was always Sony's plan to have you buy the same game twice so you could play it on the go, bring it home, transfer your save file and play it on the big screen. The only thing that's different now is that the concept will be introduced sooner using the PSP instead of them waiting for the NGP as we had originally been led to believe.

I want to know if it's emulation or port. I'm hoping for some enhanced emulation, it'd be cheaper for dev/publisher to release game under this remaster line, so there will be more games under this line. and also because emulation will make it possible for cross compatibility for NGP.

the current ps1 emulation for psp and ps3 is excellent. I want something like that, but with native upscaling to hd.

The announcement was classic playstation portable titles. Type-0 isn't even out in one continent yet. We don't even know the full quality of Type-0 yet, so how could anyone anticipate a remastering (unless they didn't even want the PSP version in the first place)?

Besides, its not like the remasters would come day and date with the first release anyway, so it couldn't possibly hurt initial sales or forecasts or any of that.

But unless the Blu-Ray version comes with a download PSN code, people will need a THIRD copy to play on the NGP! I really think they should be encouraging people towards downloads so that NGP backwards compatibility becomes a greater selling point.

I'm hoping/speculating that this psp re-mastered, will be the same as psp re-releases on NGP in this news
http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/01/31/umd_ngp_releases/

if it's the same, I sure as hell like the prospect of playing FF Type 0 on NGP with HD graphics, and it will certainly wait for NGP version.
