Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch

PS5 Pro is generally posting really positive results in games like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Hogwarts Legacy, but as with all things in life, there are inconsistencies.

It’s worth underlining that it’s down to individual developers to get the most out of Sony’s hardware, and not all of them are doing a good job. We’ve reported on the likes of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Silent Hill 2, two titles which are pretty terribly enhanced on PS5 Pro. Others showing sub-optimal results include Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Dragon’s Dogma 2, and Alan Wake 2.

And now some early adopters are campaigning for the ability to play games in their original guise. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 allows you to do this, for example: you can toggle between the standard PS5 settings or the PS5 Pro options if you want to.

PSSR is amazing, but it is not the magic bullet that fixes all image quality problems that some games have if you just replace the previous upscaling solution with this new one,” one fan noted on Reddit. “It still needs to be properly implemented and tested. Maybe Sony should mandate that all PS5 Pro patches need to still include all modes of the standard PS5 version.”

That same person added: “I wanted to continue playing Star Wars Outlaws in the 40fps mode until I found out that Ubisoft removed all previous modes with the PS5 Pro patch. I was quite annoyed when I discovered that.”

This creates an interesting headache for Sony: the console experience is built on the idea that things work out of the box, so would adding more options create confusion? We’d argue the PS5 Pro is designed for enthusiasts first-and-foremost, so it wouldn’t hurt to give them more flexibility.

Ultimately, we think the real problem here is developers deploying undercooked patches. No game should look worse on the PS5 Pro, but some titles are releasing in that state. We understand there’s little financial incentive for companies to go back to their older games and update them, but if they’re actively breaking their software, maybe it’d be better to do nothing at all. Surely they want their titles to be presented in the best quality possible?

These are probably just early teething troubles for the PS5 Pro; the hardware is new and developers are still getting to grips with PSSR. Nevertheless, it’s not a great look if £700/$700 hardware is making popular titles look worse, is it?

Even if Pushsquare is for Sony PS news, they are very inconsistent with there news and content. It's just weeks in Ps5 pro in the market, not even a month, so expect more improvement, learning and more updates for PSSR ML. But constructive criticism and complains are helpful to make developers aware of what improvement is needed.

we're not beta testing the hardware lol. The hardware is what it is.

The software devs need to find the best way to use the hardware just as always. We have already seen some devs figure it out.

This would make sense if PS5 Pro was a surprise or something like that... but given the fact that this machine is more or less known for 6 months at least.. it does looks like 3rd party devs are thinkings Sony should be 100% responsible for every possible optimization, and this is really not the case (nor it should be).

I don't own Silent Hill, Jedi Survivor or Alan Wake, but most of the games I've tried are great.

I own most of the bigger games that are Pro Enhanced.
The journalist is just sensationalizing the issue with the two or three games. While majority of the games like for example FF7 rebirth, Horizon, Stellar blade, Dragons Dogma 2, etc. are performing pretty well in ps5 pro. But still, Sony and the developers have to resolve the issues with those games which has technical issues in ps5 pro.

I went through that thread. It's a few people complaining and a whole bunch of people saying dumb things like "haha, glad I didn't buy" and one especially dumb person saying "PSSR was a mistake" and "they shouldn't have put it in a half step console to beta test for the next console"

These games should be patched, yes. But people are dumb. So is Pushsquare.

Yeah, I honestly just lucked out and didn't buy the games that dont have great Pro upgrades.

I almost bought SH2, but I was waiting for the Pro update first. I'll buy it when/if it's fixed. Don't really care about Alan Wake 2 or Jedi Survivor.

I might buy Alan Wake 2 in the future, but I'm in no rush.

Sony should have set some guidelines for video modes and encouraged developers to follow the stated goal of not forcing the user to choose between performance and fidelity.

It's funny considering how Sony tried putting standardized settings in place at the system level for the games to draw from, and now this.

A few devs suck at patching their games and we blame the hardware?
Meanwhile other dev deliver great patches and even unpatched games like Elden Ring and Armored Core run much better.

Haven’t played that many games and not Silent Hill 2 which I hear a lot about but are things really this bad in general?

The games I’ve played has looked great. No complaints here yet.
 
I find it interesting that on PC, when a game comes out and its upscaling implementation is fucked up, the dev gets the blame. But on console, Sony apparently gets the blame? Why? There are several games that did it more or less correctly.

PC gamers have been complaining about issues founding responsible for those hw companies like AMD, Nvidia and Intel because of broken drivers or broken specific features or AI upscaling, also and when it comes to software they are the first ones pointing to Microsoft, Epic, or any other engine, they are not the ones trying to defend anyone but asking for accountability and fixes for those issues.

Sony is responsible because they are the ones providing the platform, the compatibility options to users, certifying Pro Enhanced games/patches, but the dev is also responsible because of their Q&A processes before releasing a Pro Enhanced game/patch.

Wrong. We have plenty of gamers that complain when devs implement FSR 1 instead of FSR 2, or make FSR look really crappy (more than usual). There are definitely better and worse implementations. We have people complaining when devs implement older versions of DLSS and we even have mods that let us swap out the DLLs for more modern ones. These are never blamed on AMD or nvidia (other than the general shittiness of FSR).

These are never blamed on AMD or nvidia (other than the general shittiness of FSR).

And some others have been complaining towards AMD and Nvidia because of their own SDKs and drivers, PC gamers are not rabid fanboys when it comes to the PC platform itself

People are acting like it's a next-gen console.

Games like Horizon and NMS show that Pro delivers.
Certain games screwing up their updates is on the devs.

I find it interesting that people only use the opening area of SH2 for the analysis. What's wrong with the other areas?
Like the shimmering in the barn in Dragon's Dogma 2. Nevermind it's the only console running it at 60fps😂 guess Digital Foundry had to find something since their "cpu bound" propaganda didn't land well.

When DLSS first released everyone and their mother shat on Nvidia, and rightfully so as it was quite bad. Same with FSR 1.0 and AMD. These days DLSS has proved itself so any bad implementation is solely on the developer. AMD still gets flak for all versions of FSR to this day.

Yes, and there are plenty of examples where PSSR is actually quite good, so I would say places where it looks shitty is due to developer negligence.

Even with the good games the underlying issues with the upscaler are visible, namely that image instability. Bad implementations and lower resolution only seem to worsen it. So I think asking Sony to improve the algorithm is a valid position to take, but the worse examples here is almost certainly on the developers, and most of the ire should be directed at them. Both Bloober and EA are working on patches, so I’m curious to see what the results of those are.

We're not talking about improving it though, we're in a thread where people are telling Sony to disable it.
 
I just wish developers played their own games. Reminds of Cyberpunk on last gen. There is no way they played Alan Wake 2 and Jedi Survivor and went that's an improvement. Happened with the PS4 Pro with Skyrim where it ran a lot worse than on the base system because 4k was too much. I don't have much hope. Should just preserve all existing modes as an easy way out because their incompetent.
