The game is set in 2165, thirty years after the events of the first game. Humanity has found a way to heal the world, turning regions of the Wasteland into lush jungles, wetlands and even tundra. Trade is growing and a type of "Wild West" society is emerging. The brutal ways of the old world still remain, however, and these new, delicate biomes are under attack by gangs that want to control their resources. The Authority has returned, waging war against anyone who won't follow their rule.

The player assumes the role of Walker, one of the last Rangers in the Wasteland. After being robbed by the Authority, (the primary antagonists of the first game), Walker tears through the Wasteland to seek vengeance and to ultimately end the Authority's oppression.

Many elements return from the first RAGE, including Vehicle Combat, Wingsticks, and Mutants. Many of these elements have evolved between games; the Wingstick now has an enhanced tracking ability, and vehicles can be repaired and customized to a greater extent.

The Wasteland is a big place. You can take an airboat ride across the swamplands, explore a city that's been overtaken by vegetation, head into the deadly chasm known as “The Crack,” and even venture through mutant-infested sewers and high-tech Authority labs. Despite the vastness of the game world, RAGE 2 is completely free of load screens.

You get elevators and forced pauses when you complete objectives instead :messenger_hushed:

If you change the time of day in the photo menu, it will stay changed. Helps with looting outposts at night...

Rage 2 has one thing I really missed in this decade's first person shooters: good physics! Stuff blows up, breaks up and flies around like it's 2007, including pieces of enemy armour. It has a ton of destructible crates and explosive barrels. It's easier to loot crates by shooting at them.

-Best feeling gunplay I've ever experienced in an open world game.
-Breath taking vistas.
-A progression system that makes sense.
-So many fun toys to play with.
-Physics everywhere! Just look around your vehicle while romping through the desert!
-Most badass looking explosions I've seen yet
-Minimal bullshit story to deal with.
-No grinding.
-No microtransactions.
-No GAAS bullshit.

Its like this game was built for me specifically. I can't get enough of it. As an older gamer that has been playing FPS since Wolfenstein 3D, THIS is the kind of game I remember wishing for when I was a youngin'.

Protips:
If you're using M/Kb and have an extra mouse button, remap your focus key to it. Thank me later.

Turn off auto centering of the camera while driving. Makes driving not suck with M/Kb.

Go Go Neo Rangers!
After what Gerstmen said on Giant bomb I'm convinced he never touched the upgrade trees.

Awful misrepresentation of this game by many reveiws out there that clearly just ran through it as fast as possible.

Spent 3 hours with it last night on X1X, and while it has some issues with what was seen in Mad Max with regards of side missions as filler, I don't mind it.

The shooting parts are like a Tony hawk/Bulletstorm-esque exercise in attempting to cause as much mayhem as I can in a single gunfight.

I like it, but wish the car combat was better and that the sentinel towers had more strategy as opposed to shoot, hide, shoot, hide then jump then shoot some more.

I would put this game at a solid 82-85.

hmm game doesnt look that good on pc maxed , could it be its just console port then. textures not so sharp and so detailed as well even compared to far cry 5 pc version.
and its very fast shooting game. im maybe not for it for now. so ill leave it to other times maybe... tried half hr or so and i wanna slower paced game for now... after days gone and even division 2 its just so fast ... but again on pc not visualy amazing...

I'm really enjoying it for the most part... Except the F-ing ammo grind. I feel like I'm constantly having to manage ammo, which I don't enjoy.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong? My shot is not that shit. :messenger_squinting_tongue:

As for looks, it's kind of a crazy game in that it can look pretty bad at times and gorgeous at others. Playing at 1440p.

The textures are shit. The first game also had poor texture resolution but their variety is still unmatched.
Mad Max looked better overall.
Depth of field and AA options bring down the image quality. I disabled DoF and use FXAA, otherwise it's too blurry.

Break more ammo boxes dude. There’s ammo everywhere!

To balance out my glowing review above here are a few negatives

-Textures are a bit blurrier than I'm used to. Will try FXAA and DoF Off when I get home to see how I like it.
-The 25-30 minutes before you hit the open world are a little underwhelming. Made me go "uh oh" once or twice.
-For those that care, the story is largely underwhelming. This game took the Doom approach in that department and pretty much said Fuck the story, go cause Carnage.
-Questionable key bindings. CTRL for Focus was super awkward. Switched to extra mouse button and it improved it greatly.
-Driving was awkward with M/Kb until I turned off auto camera centering.

It’s disturbing how blurry the game is. Driving is bad but I’ve been drifting the whole time so I’m managing

Combat is making up for the ugly aspects in the game

I had more fun driving and racing in the first game lol
The obligatory story race is bullshit. Not doing another one unless it's forced again. The physics are killing it and the car controls like shit compared to the default vehicle. Track visibility is occasionally poor too. What a mess.

Mutant Bash is worse too and its host is a major misfire. All writing and characters are worse. It's a shitty Far Cry knock-off. The first game was stylish, this one is in bad taste. Surprising after Mad Max...

And finally, the bandits are not distinct enough. One of the coolest things about the first game was the bandit clan variety. Here 90% of them are the generic goons and the rest are slightly different variations.

Anyway, the preorder mission is probably the most decent preorder level I've ever played. Shit really gets real lol

Elon Musk, Rick and Morty fan and billionaire CEO of Tesla and SpaceX who smoked weed once, is an indecently rich man who could use his money to solve a lot of problems today, but instead chooses to make electric cars for other rich people and crash rockets into boats
It's not a particularly strong joke on Avalanche's part because it lacks specificity and more direct jabs at Elon's many public blunders, but it's a tiny, warm pocket of cosmic justice in a cold world. I'll take it.

Here's an archive link for those that want a laugh from this guy's obvious jealousy

Played for about 4.5 hours last night, which I typically wouldn't do during the week because of how physically demanding my job is. Holy shit this game is fun. It runs great on PC and the combat is ridiculously good. I'm not seeing what 95% of these reviewers are seeing. Can't wait to play more today after work.

Turn off Chromatic Aberration it y'all are having issues with it being blurry. CA sucks in every game.

GerAlt-Right. Ciriously.
Very very disappointed with how poor the game looks on my X. I was expecting Doom level visuals. I appreciate 60fps, but would gladly take a locked 30fps and a higher less blurry resolution.

It’s definitely making me ready for next gen.

Enough with the archive links, little ones. Such passive aggressive bullshit. Wish GAF mods would just ban these outright.
Write trash articles, get hit with the archive button. Simple. Anyway, back to video games.
I’ll try turning off motion blur on console and see what happens. Thank you
That's what fixed it for me on PC. I wish I could turn down a notch the effects while using Overdrive. They look great, but they're way too distracting.

DEFINITELY getting this game, it's matter of when. The main factor is actually HDD space. I just spent ages rejigging everything and there is no filler on my PS4 now... but also no space, only got room for a few choice games, which is dire.

Mad Max was an awesome experience. I loved that you got inconvenienced for minutes at a time with sandstorms. Most devs would have shied away from something like that... really added to the experience. Also, the driving physics were great in that game (more realistic AND fun than GTA V)

Well, after Days Gone, I'm trusting review scores much less lately. Looking forward to hearing more impressions.

Yeah, I've learned to basically ignore them these days. Especially now they are agenda/clickbait based and not a true representation of the games themselves. If you go with your gut you are less likely to be disappointed, miss out on something or get suckered by hype.

I think you just have to find the reviewers that appeal to you. It's not rocket science.

I was pretty sure I was gonna like Rage 2 based on ACG and some other opinions that tend to jive with mine.

I'm with you on Mad Max, but as cool as it is, Rage 2 doesn't do these things as well. The driving is not nearly as good and, as far as I can tell where I am at, the sense of speed is gone.

Also, there was an eeriness in Mad Max that made the silent driving cool as shit. Not so much in Rage 2.

Well I got past the intro.

Shooting feels good. Shooting sounds good. Framerate is good. The music is good.

Then I go into the menu screen and lagginess between selections is absolutely inexcusable and eventually locked up on me. I didn't get a hard crash or a blue screen but it froze solid like a motherfucker and I immediately exited out (PS4 Pro).

Back to Days Gone.

I think I'm the only one that doesn't mind the blurry look. I love how heavy the game goes on post-fx and the like.

I've always kinda liked soft looks in 3d games, but this game manages to be soft and still have pretty bad jaggies in places.

It's not rocket science, but it can require a lot of legwork and reading, in order to find a game journalist whose opinion reliably lines up with your own. I haven't found one, personally.

Even YouTube? I don't have many writers I currently like either. But I wasn't disagreeing with you about review scores in general.
