Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

The Last Of Us was the most creatively bankrupt pile of horseshit that I played last year. I seriously cannot believe that ripping off Telltale The Walking Dead's narrative - believable characters + Uncharted gunplay = GOTY is a thing.

I'm serious.

Achievements are pointless; pursuing them is a waste of time. Gamerscores and Platinum Trophies do not determine who is better at a game, or who is a better overall gamer (speaking of pointless,) just which gamer had more free time to waste on a pointless endeavor. They are a byproduct of the "participation trophy" society we now live in. It's not enough to play a game and enjoy it, you now have to be given a trophy for playing that game. Well, bully for you; you finished the game, just like millions of other people; have a trophy so you can brag how big your gamerscore is. Spend a few dozen more hours playing the chapters over and over until you perfect them so you can get a Platinum trophy to really get your friends jealous of your gaming prowess. That'll show the world how awesome you are.

Meh.

The Walking Dead is a buggy piece of shit. Both series. Telltale should be embarrassed to ship something of that "quality".

Steady frame rate, high frame rate, resolution, artifact reduction (AF, AA) are extremely important in video games-- as in, more important than having more graphical effects.

I kinda like variable framerate. Nothing makes you appreciate graphics more when everything starts exploding and the framerate drips to 30fps.

Mario Sunshine was the best 3d Mario ever made

That's indeed one unpopular opinion, haha. I've got the game for like two years and I still have just 23 Shine Sprits. Mind you, I played the Galaxy games first so Sunshine doesn't feel magical at all to me.

Might give it another try when my backlog is running dry.

I have owned the game since the first day it came out and have never really liked it. I also cannot play it today due to the inability to make the camera uninverted.

Lol maybe it won't hold up now. It's been a long time but I thought it was brilliant.

My controversial gaming opinion;
Titanfall isn't as amazing as everyone's talking about. It's just blacklight retribution with parkour, double jumping jet packs and agile mechs

I don't like the gameplay of the MGS series.

I've played MGS1 and about 90 minutes of the second and third games. I just found them extremely frustrating and difficult.

What I saw of the stories were interesting, but not enough to sit through that gameplay.

I can't speak for the Walking Dead games, but I do agree with this opinion.

Naughty Dog manages to take all the terrible, cliche'd bullshit from games and films and puts them together.

And somehow there are people who love it. But why should I be surprised. There are people who love soap operas on TV. There are people who loved Twilight and 50 Shades of Gray. So of course there is going to be people who love The Last of Us. I just don't understand why there are so many of them.

Pretty much right here. I don't see why anyone would want a remake of any past FF from the current Squeenix.

This, so much.

Why is it that so many people bash SE but trust them to remake their favorite games? The way people beg for a VII remake while they curse and spit whenever Lightning is mentioned--with no sense of irony whatsoever--is just mindboggling.

Final Fantasy fans have no idea what they really want.

I really really think the f2p model espoused in valve titles, ps2, lol is the way forward for the video game industry as long as they keep it from turning pay to win.

Why. Games are dying because developers abandon them after a few patches. F2P games have constant development which results in continuously improving products.

It's also a good way to pay for rising development costs.

I also hate what the Battlefield series has become and CoD as well.

Valve's F2P model makes a hell of a lot of sense for competitive, online, and "esports" games. Besides the reasons you list, you also want as large a player base as possible in such games to achieve critical mass. Making the entry price free is the best way to do that.

My controversial gaming opinion;
Titanfall isn't as amazing as everyone's talking about. It's just blacklight retribution with parkour, double jumping jet packs and agile mechs

Yeah, yeah, titanfall is just "insert random FPS game here" with mechs and wall running. This is getting old.

My controversial opinion: bioshock 2 is a better game than bioshock infinite.

While I can see a small difference in resolution between most Xbox one and PS4 titles, I don't care and it doesn't bother me. Or frame rate.

The "Look here to see if you can tell the difference between 30 and 60fps" is a hilarious parade of:
"I don't see it"
-"you gotta cover one up for 5 sec then switch"
"I don't see it"
-"well, you gotta have a controller"
"eh, still don't see it"
-well, the gif doesn't do it justice"
"I don't see it"
-"you gotta cover one eye"

It's funny to me that the same forum can praise something like Hotline Miami, then shudder at the thought that a game is 900p instead of 1080p and decree it unplayable. I just think fun is fun.

My controversial gaming opinion;
Titanfall isn't as amazing as everyone's talking about. It's just blacklight retribution with parkour, double jumping jet packs and agile mechs

The most entertaining thing about Titanfall criticism is how each argument is EXACTLY the same. Titanfalll is just [insert any contemporary FPS] but with X,Y,Z,A,B,C,D,E,F,G, and H.

If you're going to rant something about Titanfall, please at least make it meaningful. Every game is derivative of something else - EVERY game.

Anyway, my controversial opinion is that the weird prepubescent teen thing many JRPG's have going on is super weird and creepy, and I question the people who like that style.

I like Kotaku despite being a sensationalist gaming news site.
If the sensationalism is for entertainment topics and not "real" news, then I'm okay with that.

I just simply grew up with Kotaku in my early days of gaming news.

Most of the hype surrounding Titalfall is genuine. The media can get a little hyperbolic and obnoxious with their praise, but playing the beta convinced me that it was a legitimately impressive and entertaining game.

-FFX is the worst FF game pre-XIII and set the stage for the state of FF nowadays by heavily favoring elements that would eventually lead to the Lightning Saga.

-Super Smash Bros Brawl stomps on everything that makes Melee one of my favorite games of all time, and its absolutely one of the worst sequels that I've ever played. Project M is the only thing that makes it worth owning.

-Silent Hill 4, while not as good as SH2, is still an amazing game with one of the best stories in the series and is a memorable experience in general.

-MGS1-4 are all amazing games, and I can't believe that some people complain about a crazy story in MGS4 when a hilariously over-the-top story has been a series staple since MGS1.

-I prefer Kingdom Hearts Final Mix to Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, though I quite like both. I even finished the level 1 run in KH2FM, which improved the experience, but I am more partial to the creative world design in KH1 and IMO more enjoyable gameplay.

-A game having a well told story with great production values does not mean that it should be written off as "A CRAPPY CINEMATIC GAME RUINING THE INDUSTRY!!!?!"

-I enjoy SoulCalibur V the most out of SCII-V

1) Every Ratchet game since Up Your Arsenal has been worse than any of the first three games, mainly because the writer who overtook the franchise since 2007 (and left last year) is not nearly as comedic or smooth as the original guy.

2) I think Sonic Boom could save the Wii U (I can't keep a straight face saying that though) It looks like the Jak & Daxter 4 we never got.

Aside from Vice City, I think the GTA games are boring and not very fun.

I think GTA games should be period pieces, not simulations of every day life. I think Vice City was the best representation of what GTA can and should be, and I've been disappointed that since Vice City, most GTA games have been modern day... which isn't very interesting.

The best moments of Vice City are when you're cruising down the strip next to the beach in an 80's convertible and Flock of Seagulls comes on.

San Andreas had this feel, but it wasn't as powerful as when I experienced it in Vice City.

Yeah me too. I find it weird but I still respect people who like it. But damn, it's really really weird.

Another opinion: extreme focus on hardware on a hobby that's supposed to be about entertainment. Makes me think if I'm to lazy to care about these things despite studying Computer Engineering. I like discussing it, I do like good graphics but I think that extreme focus on things like resolution takes away the fun. Yeah, I'm not defending any console (I don't intend to buy one anytime soon) but seeing people criticizing a game because of it's technical aspect instead of having fun is so annoying (f.e. Titanfall).

GTA is incredibly boring, on of the most boring game series Ive ever tried.
I really liked MoH and MoH: Warfighter.
Crysis is one of the most enjoyable games I have ever played.

Ouh as I feel like having a special "taste" sometimes I need to get a few things off my chest:

- I didn't enjoy Bioshock 1 & 2 (and skipped Infinite because of that)
- I hate the recent Tomb Raider game for it's illogical action scenes
- I think Demon's Souls is a much better game than Dark Souls
- I enjoyed Mass Effect 1 much more than ME2 (and ME3 was crap)
- Red Faction Guerilla & Dead Island are two of my favourite open world games
- MGS4 is my favourite MGS even though half of the world hates it
- Metal Gear Rising is not worthy to be part of the franchise
- I hate Bayonetta and everything about it (in fact I dislike most of Platinum's games)

That felt good.

We share a lot of those sentiments, pal! Good thing you skipped Infinite BTW, because it was more of the same, only worse IMO.

QTEs are great. The more the better.

ME2 was millions of miles better than ME1. ME1's crown jewel was planet Noveria (insanely long corporate espionage mission) and the breadth of the Citadel. ME2 does everything else better. Characters and their backstories are superb - you actually care about Tali, Miranda, Legion, etc... And the game play is an exquisite marriage between RPG + 3rd person shooter. ME1's game play doesn't match up, and it's topped off with a horrible inventory management system. I still loved playing ME1, but I think ME2 is better.

JRPGs make me sick to my stomach. Anything with random battles, turn-based battles, or even battle arenas make me sick. I'm not sure battle arenas are the right term, but here is what I mean: consider Tales of Symphonia. It doesn't have random or turn-based battles. But when you stumble into an enemy, you get transported to a fucking battle arena... annoying. Even worse is when JRPGs seem to love making what looks like a 10-year-old girl wear skimpy clothing...

I feel there's a serious problem with sexism in the gaming community.

Despite the level design making me cream my pants in ecstasy, I don't think the mechanics in Doom have held up very well at all.

I don't think linear level design by itself is a bad thing.

I think Candy Crush is actually remarkably well designed and that if it was made by some Estonian indie studio and featured runestones instead of candy we'd all say it was a brilliant take on a simple yet classic formula.

I don't like WRPGs, particularly, shooters. I never understood the appeal for them. I tried playing Uncharted and God of War once and I felt bored. I also tried L4D2 once and I didn't enjoy it. I only lasted an hour or so before I gave up.

As for my tastes, I like games developed by Japanese pubs. I enjoy most of them especially if the genre is JRPGs or VN style story telling/gameplay (AA series, Danganronpa).

I can't stand Japanese RPGs, or anything with an anime art style.
BF3/4 > BC2
DmC was actually a good game, par the horrendous story.
Naughty Dog > Rockstar
Conker's Bad Fur Day is better than anything else Rare or Nintendo made for the N64.
The Sonic Adventure games aged like shit.
The only good thing about GTA5 is the city and how you can explore it.
Sexism in games is a weird topic, considering males are oversexualized just as much as females in games (I'm pretty sure not every guy is a bad-ass who bench-presses 100 times a day).
My tastes are in Platformers/Action-Adventure games.

I thought the uncharted series was mediocre at best, only excelling in graphics.

The only FPS I've ever really enjoyed were the recent Fallout games.

Despite knowing the story telling in NV is better than F3, I prefer F3.

I feel freelancer is the best game ever, from a gameplay perspective.

Mario games were fun when I was little, but they've grown stale to the point I wont play them anymore.

I always thought Mario 64 was a terrible game, especially since there were better 3d platformers available and Mario controlled like a rock with square wheels.

FF2 is the best pre-3d FF, in terms of leveling up.

FF6 was merely okay, and is certainly not the best 2d FF. 5 was leagues better.

The vita is better in every aspect when compared to the 3ds.

I think Nintendo handhelds would be doing around the same, if not worse than sony's if pokemon didn't exist.

The original xbox was a ugly piece of garbage.

The best Dynasty warriors was dynasty warriors 4.

All the numbered megaman games are terrible, and the best titles in the series are on GBA.

Rayman Origins was better than Rayman legends.

The PS1 rayman games were awful, even by PS1 standards.

Edit:

Suda 51 has never made a good game

There has never been a good Resident evil game.

FFTA2 was better than FFTA and maybe tactics also

TOLUCT was so up its own butt with trying to establish lore I couldn't finish it.

I couldn't finish GTASA or GTA4 because of the graphics and fog.

None of the 3d ninja gaiden games are good.

Demons souls is a game with terrible combat and almost exclusively Bullet sponge enemies. "really hard" is not a feature that can make a game good by itself.

i got bored with fire emblem awakening after a few hours and will never go back to it. i'd rather play advance wars to scratch my strategy itch.

i find super mario 3d world boring and uninspired.

battlefield 4 is a fucking awesome game. i have had minimal problems with it and enjoyed the hell out of it. i'll be there day one for bf5.

I don't like the Halo games very much.

Bioshock isn't a very good game.

Resident Evil 5 is one of the best co-op games ever made.

Grand Theft Auto IV > Red Dead Redemption.

MGS4 > Peace Walker.

Not only will Steam Machines succeed.

They SHOULD succeed, and in a big way.

Get game development onto the Linux platform in a big way. Make the library go from 10% saturation of major releases to 85% saturation within 3 years.

The world will be a better place.

I thought Metal Gear Solid 2 was better than the first game.

I liked Final Fantasy X-2, primarily for the battle system.

Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix is probably my second favorite JRPG ever made, because of how fluid the combat is.
